Up until last year, the Transformers franchise in video games was something of a joke. The first two movie-licensed games were forgettable action affairs that tried to blend transforming abilities with run and gun action. They failed in one form or another, making the Autobots and Decepticons as undesirable as, say, the Gobots. But then something happened with the release of War For Cybertron. High Moon Studios actually got the formula right, creating a stirring, over-the-top shoot-em-up with a bold storyline, satisfying combat and the kind of graphics that made you think “Wow, they really dug into the creator’s heads!” It’s still a classic to this day. Now High Moon Studios teams up with Activision again for Dark of the Moon, a game loosely based on the forthcoming Michael Bay effects fest of the same name. This is a precursor to the movie storyline, telling a tale of ancient Cybertron technology and the Autobots and Decepticons fighting to keep control of it. It’s typical good versus evil stuff, but it does set the stage for some interesting stage scenarios.
