Wii sales-to-date close in on Xbox 360

Nintendo Co. last week disclosed to-date sales for the company's blockbuster Wii sales that total near Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, a product that held a year head start. Nintendo reported sales of 13.2 million Wii units worldwide to date. The same week, Microsoft disclosed in a Q1 earnings report sales of 13.4 million Xbox 360 units worldwide.

In contrast, demand for Sony's PS3 has been lackluster due to high cost and average game library. The hardware sold 119,000 units in Sept. in the U.S., far below the Xbox 360 and Wii. The hardware has sold about five million units worldwide to date.

This holiday will be a crucial factor in which console will reign supreme this generation. Wii and Xbox 360 look to crash head-to-head while Sony may recoup lost sales with a new $399 40GB SKU. Take a seat, the video game wars are about to blow up.

The Wii is hot on the Xbox360's heals. The last time it was reported that the Wii had passed it in sales Halo 3 was released an gave it a boost. Now with it set to happen again what will Microsoft put out to extend their lead?

PS360WII3555d ago

Well MS reports shipped and Nintendo reprots sales to consumers. So for as many consoles MS has in retail stores and homes Nintendo has in homes alone.

TheXgamerLive3555d ago

The numbers for MS are "SOLD" numbers as well, thus it say's "SALES".

Yes, sad little sony is 250% behind the Wii in sales, and the Xbox 360. Xbox 360 is still number one for now. Wii will probably pass them in 2008, maybe not, but one things for sure, the ps3 never will.

Accept it and move on.

Calm down XGamer, you make it sound like he just made fun of your mom or something. If you feel he's wrong, why not say it in a civilized and mature manner? Newsflash: not everyone is a console zealot.

"Turd Brain"? How old are you?

PS360WII3555d ago

sales as in sales to retailers. Ah well whatever I say you'll never accept so I guess I'll just say 'ner' plus who said anything about Sony?

SmokeyMcBear3555d ago

is sold to retailers and sold to consumers the same thing?

TheXgamerLive3555d ago

I was getting PO'd as he does this often so I finally remarked back. Nothing more than he deserves.

PS360WII3555d ago

What do I do often that gets you PO'd? I usually call out haters and trollers and usually say positive things for the consoles.

This is in their financial reports.....This is the only solid info on Sales for companies. VG charts and all those other sites are never close to accurate. But then again how could they be?

PS360WII3555d ago

Nintendo has always given sold to consumer numbers. Sony and MS have always given shipped numbers (they say sold as in sold to retailers) Sony a few months ago have now reported sold to consumers leaving MS as the only Co. to give us shipped (sold to retailers)

I'm hardly whining. If I was I'd be saying 'But Nintendo didn't release till a year ago and Xbox had all this stuff released before hand and I they count the broken boxes as well.'

Geez you'd think I just said MS is going out of business. They aren't by the way.

hahahabutt3555d ago

Wow, this is wierd, I thought Wii surpassed 360 a while back. I guess Halo 3 had something to do with it.

Hm, I really wouldn't be so sure, now in late 2008, 2009 you could be but it's way too soon to be saying things like this.

In any case, with Mario coming out this year and with SSBB, etc, etc, Wii will kill 360 and PS3 and be the top dog.

Twizlex3555d ago

Maybe, but I think most people that are looking forward to those games are people that already own a Wii.

Wii60PS3DSPSP3554d ago

If thats the case Twizlex why are they constantly sold out then?

Twizlex3554d ago

Oh, take your pick of any of the conspiracy theories out there. I'm curious to see the holiday sales for the Wii. If the Wii is always sold out and always sells about 500,000+ consoles per month, will it only sell 500,000 to 1 million consoles over the holiday? If it sells more, then that's proof they've been purposely holding back. And before anyone says "well they just ramped up the production", why on earth haven't they already done that if the system is constantly sold out? Obviously the demand is there, so if they COULD ramp up the production, I think they would have already. But since they haven't, that means they are either unable to produce more units (which the holiday sales will indicate), or they're holding back on purpose.

But anyways, if the system is constantly sold out, it can't exactly be MORE sold out just because of these games. So either way, these games aren't going to push any more consoles than what normally get sold per month.
