Andriasang writes "Nintendo's new console, Wii U, will not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata confirmed this to investors during a Q&A session at E3 last week."
Didn't expect it to at all and dunno why it should anyway. Got my PS3 for Blu-ray playback, but will get the Wii U just for gaming, just as I did with the Wii. Blu-ray/DVD playback would be a nice finess, but certainly not vital IMO. Would just mean it would be more expensive.
Nintendo has lost their way. With the DS and the Wii, they talked about getting back to the roots of gaming and making videogames - not movies or TV shows - the center of the living room. That was less than a decade ago. Now Nintendo has turned into a toddler in pull-ups shouting "I'm a big boy! Lookie me! I have multiplatform games that come a year after they hit the other consoles (Battlefield 3, Arkham City)! Imma big now, mommy!"
How does that post have anything to do with Blu-ray playback? Isn't removing Blu-ray playback a sign of focusing on games (though I know Wii didn't have it either)?
I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying here. If I'm not mistaken you're just trolling then.
No, Nintendo is trying to be more multimedia focused these days, which is a departure from how they used to be.
Doesn't matter to me, I haven't bought a movie in years! I went from having over 500 dvd's to none and haven't looked back! Netflix all the way! At least you are ensuring that your drive will have extra life by not over using it for multiple task.
I agree with you, I completely stopped buying dvd's a long time ago. Especially after netflix started streaming and since, I bought 2 Blu-Rays, both less than $10! What concerns me more is that Nintendo is making their network too open without any standard requirement. That is essentially the strategy PSN (or lack of) had, thus not all games support trophies, less people with headset and a bunch of others (mostly minor) features....
oh really? then you will have no excuse for putting out an expensive price tag on this thing.
cough cough... they are going back to their roots
They are cheapening the Wii U manufacturing costs
I love how all the details of the system are coming after their press conference. The Wii U was badly presented at E3
"but I can speak generally about the direction that we are moving in.". That sums up everything Nintendo has to say regarding the Wii U.
the Wii "couldn't" play Dvd movies either yet the hackers came and made it possible through a custom FW... Nintendo says these lies and make proprietary discs so they don't have to pay royalties to anybody else.
Why is it a lie? I dont see how them saying it wont play DVDs and then someone forcing it to do it is a lie at all. It would be a lie if they said it did play them but it didnt...
I was looking at the back of teh wiiu and i didnt even see and ethernet port. I know its not even close to finalized but i would think something liek that would be a no brainer now days with all of the talk about how online is so important.
Yea one other article pointed out that it was to cut costs as well because people use wireless but i expect it to be added before launch. If they don't add it then they should just focus on the causals.
"If they don't add it then they should just focus on the causals." Because seeing movies is too hardcore. Casuals dont see movies.
I was talking about having an ethernet port
