Wii U Is Actually 50% More Powerful Than PS3 - Report

Wii U will be HD, supporting up to 1080p resolution just like Xbox 360 and PS3, but beyond that it's unclear how powerful the hardware will ultimately be when it ships sometime next year. Nintendo never provides a full breakdown, although the company did say that the form factor is "near final." While many assumed Wii U would be on par with the current HD consoles, word is coming in from developers that it's quite a bit more powerful.

Good enough. Nintendo will make full use of their hardware as they always do, and thus we will get some excellent visuals. But graphics don't really matter since everything is 1080p, it's the controller that will really make this console great!

HUD in your hand!!!

Virtual console games in your hand!!!

Wii games like New SMB in your hand!!!

ftw

TheOldOne2376d ago

This only makes me wonder how much more powerful the Xbox 720 and PS4 will be.

Nintendo needs to change the name, Wii U sounds crappy.

gaffyh2376d ago

I'll believe it when I see it for myself, not some smoke and mirrors tech demo.

Apex132376d ago

I agree with the name but due to how much money Nintendo made on a lesser console and how much money the other 2 lost on every machine sold I don't think they will be leaps ahead at all. Sony just to keep up with Ninty are losing money on every Vita they sell which, is not a good business model.

NewMonday2376d ago

part of the power must go to the tablet screen, that's why games will just look on par with the PS3 and 360.

I_find_it_funny2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

so what, 3rd party wont make games a lot better for WiiU and leave 360 and PS3 behind, 3rd party games will look the same

it's up to Nintendo to show the potential

fr0sty2376d ago

This only makes me wonder why we're only seeing games that barely keep the pace with PS3. Either someone's full of crap or they're holding WAAAAAY back.

sikbeta2376d ago

@TheOld

If wii-u = 50% more powerful than PS3

PS4 = at least 100% more powerful than PS3

Computersaysno2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

50 percent is not enough to run current gen titles @ 1080p natively. Just look at the resolutions, performance scaling isn't a perfect linear line and other factors determine speed but 1920 x 1080 is more than twice the resolution of the current 1280 x 720.

Anyone who looks at the figures would understand to push more than twice as many pixels you will need more than a 50 percent increase in performance.

To be twice as powerful you have to be 100 percent faster. A current GTX580 is a good 800 percent as powerful as RSX.

kneon2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

@sikbeta

I'm sure the PS4 and Xbox.next will be more than twice as powerful as their predecessors. a 100% increase would mean they only double in compute power every 7-8 years, that's pretty pathetic.

Expect at least 3-4 times as powerful as current gen. The Wii U will only have at most a year at the top of the heap.

iamnsuperman2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

The main question is how much power goes to the controller. To constaly stream content with out delay requires addition power.

DrRichtofen2376d ago

OMG guys this sucks! You know how in this gen the xbox seems to be holding back ps3 games because its not as powerful, well next gen when the new xbox and PS4 are gonna be really powerful guess who's gonna be holding them back...THE WII U. The wii u just meets this gens standards I dont how in the world it gonna match the new xbox and PS4 thanks alot nintendo.

djslapdash2376d ago

Mircosoft and Sony have stated that the technological leap from ps3/x360 > ps4/x720 wont be as big as the leap from ps2/xbox > ps3/x360.

they wont be able to absorb the same losses they did this generation.

inveni02376d ago

I read this article title and laaaaaaaughed so hard. Even the PS3 tech demos pre-launch looked better than the WiiU tech demos--not to mention games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 3, inFamous 2, etc. that the 360 itself still fails to match. What a joke.

Sony3602376d ago

Dunno why it's hard to believe. Current gen consoles have half a decade old hardware.

hazeblaze2376d ago

Exactly, this is the real issue. By the time PS4 and the next xbox come out... Nintendo will be outdated once again.

Still, I'm down for an HD Wii if the game lineup is any better this time around. I'm not really into Ninty's first party line-up titles other than Zelda and Metroid... so unless they get better love from 3rd parties this time around... I'm not interested.

SilentNegotiator2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Nintendo themselves used the word "on par", so I call BS on "50% more"

More powerful and the price of the screen controller would mean a very high price barrier.

TenkoTAiLS2376d ago

Nintendo never said "on par", the press asked if they believed they had reached the same level as current gen consoles this time, and they said "we believe so yes", does this mean it isn't any more powerful? No, not at all.

I wish people would stop all this 720 and PS4 talk too, those guys haven't announced anything beyond working on things, which in the console industry everyone does almost as soon as the current console releases. They don't just throw something together in a year. Both companies have said numerous times they won't be releasing anything new as far as home consoles anytime in the next few years. Sure that could change if they feel the Wii U is a threat, but in the mean time as a gamer wouldn't you enjoy having a new console, one that stands out, if even for a couple years? Everything eventually gets replaced, and the next thing will always be more powerful than the last.

What's comical is that everyone assumes the PS4 and 720 will be loads better since it's been 6 years, or more by the time they launch, but even tho it's been 6 years the Wii U will be the same as current gen or worse? Contradictory much?

gamingdroid2376d ago

That would give the Wii U by purely numbers, enough horsepower to run games in true 720p in all it's glory and not the way it is now, with cut backs to hit 720p for current consoles even on multi-platform titles.

DragonKnight2376d ago

@a_adji: How do you know Sony is losing money on every Vita sold? For one, it's not even on sale yet, and Two you don't know how much it costs them to make it. Sony is making a profit on the PS3 now, so I don't get where this mega loss talk is coming from.

JamestheScruffy2376d ago

Yea, it really seems like Nintendo is playing catch up with this...the Wii should jaw rivaled the PS3 and 360 at launch

BulletToothtony2376d ago

they're probably talking about wi-fi or something. I'm guessing they put wireless N ;)

There is NO way that they put something more powerful than the cell on that little thing.. is the size of my external blu-ray burner.

BS rumors.

Skip_Bayless2376d ago

Some one made a good point above and the blind put disagrees. The WiiU will hold back some high profile 3rd party games for Xbox 720 and PS4. And it's not just because it's weaker but now developers have to make 3 or 4 versions for WiiU, Xbox 720, PS4, and PC. Also maybe 6 because PS3 and PSV are still viable systems. And this is why multiplatform is bad for games. Remember the gaming depression when there were lots of platforms. No one made enough money because of the number versions of games and systems.

pixelsword2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

I require proof.

Didn't everyone, including John Carmack and Gabe Newell, say that the 360 was more powerful than the PS3?

And since then, did anyone, including them, give credence to that fact? Maybe I'm mistaken, so could anyone tell a Halo/Gears fanboy like *ME* who've been through both Halo and Gears games what games have better graphics than those on the 360 (besides Crysis, which I didn't get for the 360 or PS3 yet) are whipping up on GoW III or Uncharted 2, or even the first inFAMOUS, which to date has the most detailed city-sized game this gen? I'm NOT knocking the 360 because to me Gears 2 is in my top five games this gen, and Halo is in my top 3 of all time, but I'm just being real here. For the PS3 to be so inferior in reviews, I wonder why they always choose the PS3 and PS3 games to compare things against.

So although I'm hoping that they at least caught up to this gen in the last gen, I'm waiting for the actual games to make the difference.

MaxXAttaxX2376d ago

AFTER 5 YEARS I would hope it was better.

So far, it's all PR talk. The Wii was also supposed to be 50% more powerful than the GameCube.
No huge difference.

Skip_Bayless2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

@Pixel
Crysis 2 doesn't look any better than MW2. Matter fact I think it doesn't look as polished.

@the rest of the math illiterate
50% more or 50% less is on par. PS3 is in the 1000s of percent stronger than Wii. It doesn't equate to graphics being how many "x" better but the speed of the system to make those calculations. To throw a # out there, I'm gonna say PS3 is 40x stronger than Wii to put emphasis on what the percentage actually means. 40x is 2,000% stronger.

And therefore 50% is only 1.5x stronger. That is nothing. It's basically the difference between PS3 and 360 in terms of games. PS3 obviously is a few times stronger than 360 but when it comes to computing games the PS3 is about 1.5x stronger roughly.

The # doesn't even matter. At the end of the day PS3 is marginally better than 360 and the WiiU is marginally better or worst than the PS3/360.

ChickeyCantor2376d ago

"not some smoke and mirrors tech demo."

Moving the camera around in that zelda demo isn't really smokes and mirrors.

paintsville2375d ago

Well being more powerful than ps3 isn't any great feat. 360 has been doing it for 6 years now.

Considering how small that box is and the amount of heat a 50% more powerful PS3 would produce... I would say it is very questionable.

ProjectVulcan2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Very little heat i would imagine. 50 percent is not even like twice as powerful, remember that. By the time this console arrives, the main processors will be built on 28nm i would say. This node is now completed by TSMC and will be plenty mature by mid 2012.

Heat is essentially TDP (thermal design power) that is, the amount of energy needed to be dissipated by the cooling system to stop the processor overheating. PS3 slim's total chipset TDP is now only around 60-70w with a 40nm GPU and a 45nm CPU. This is waaaay down from near 200w(!) of the original 90nm machines.

Once Ps3 gets down to a 32nm/28nm process as it inevitably will soon, that 70w figure will reduce greatly again, under 50w i estimate.

In 2012 then and on 28nm, Nintendo could easily build a machine 50 percent faster than PS3 and still keep the TDP around 100w. For example, a Radeon 5670's total board power on 40nm is only 61w. Such a card is definitely at least 50 percent faster than RSX- and they can be had with passive coolers (no fan). The cooling for a console that only consumes 100w or so requires nothing dramatic and is not difficult to control at all, even in the small packaging shown.

Theonetheonly2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

almost all gous make it to a fanless silent version once the tech is perfected.

my old 5750 would whoop ass on my even older 8800GTX which would spank on the 7950gtx.

and it would use less power and generate less heat as well as be %50 smaller.

its just how it progresses.

and to that i would say it wouldnt generate much heat at all.

gpus that outperform and outclass the gpu in the ps3 can be had in half height pci cards for less than $60 and will operate without a fan.

I know cause i build systems for a living.

@vulcan project - Yeah what he said. :)

Eamon2376d ago

ROFLMAO. MK24ever, that was funny. That would make iPhones and tablets would melt themselves?

CPUs these days are much more energy efficient and continue to improve every year.

Johnny_Cojones2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

@MK24ever-
You're thinking in terms of outdated hardware. Graphics chips from both Nvidia & AMD/ATI have come a long way since the PS3 was created. Not only are they much more powerful, they've become much more energy efficient, & produce a lot less heat.

Edit: 700 people beat me to it. :^D

MK24ever2376d ago

Yes, I agree and I enjoyed reading the more technical answers, they make perfect sense to me. To those who had to "ROFLMAO" and insult, well, I said it was questionable, not impossible, I think it's quite a valid assumption, PS3 still produces alot of heat and it has a huge fan, the form factor is like 2.5 times the size of that Wii U box, so 50% more power on a much smaller case may still be hard to control, if it was THAT simple Sony and Microsoft would've already announced much smaller boxes to reduce manufacturing costs.

While I agree that in fact, passive coolers are already on more powerful GPUs than the one found on PS3, there's still heat being made inside that small box. So yeah, we'll wait and see what are the real specs of that thing and how will it be engineered.

ProjectVulcan2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Like i said MK24ever. Ps3 slim only produces about 70w on 45/40nm and only has one fan to help move air from the entire chipset, CPU and GPU.

The slim's size is more determined by the space needed for the BDR, HDD and power unit. Take out the power unit and you would remove a significant portion of the slim's mass- in fact the rest of the machine would probably be able to fit in the case of wii U shown without difficulty. Let us not forget both Gamecube and Wii have external power packs, this doesn't mean Wii U will too, but i bet it does have an external pack.

I would reassure you there is no problem whatsoever fitting everything inside that case and keeping it cool if its only 50 percent quicker.

There are plenty of other examples out there, but take a look at the dreamcast. PS2 wasn't exactly massively more powerful, but it was quite a bit larger even though it launched later. Mostly because of the empty modem port but still....

Modern gaming laptops have far tighter packaging i.e less volume than something like that box, and they can kick out over 100w from their chipsets. Even the little 15 inchers.

MK24ever2376d ago

True, the laptops are indeed an excellent example. About the inners of a PS3... those I know to well. To be completely honest I feel a bit bad about my posts, I'm a tech savvy guy and I'm insisting on something that makes no real sense (even to me). I came with that post without really considering much things. I even made a quite technical video not long ago. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

kikizoo2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Stop approving this f.... ms employee blog if you don't want to read stupid things :

"James Brightman has been covering the games industry since 2003 and has been an avid gamer ever since the days of Atari and Intellivision. He was previously the EIC of GameDaily Biz"

everybody knows that gamedaily, or now industry gamers are totaly biased, a real propaganda/marketing site without any real subject, information..

By the way, look at the title, the ms whore is only talking about ps3 (a stupid marketing/propaganda idea : "look, the neww nintendo is more powerfull, don't buy ps3") but forget to tell that 50 % more than ps3 = 70% or more than xbox !

Sony3602376d ago

I love how the technically illiterate try and fabricate facts when trying to disprove the obvious.

SkittlesLikesPopcorn2376d ago

you dont deserve any agrees. Ever heard of Process shrinks aka tech moving forward? Current tech doesnt output nearly as much heat as when original ps3 and 360 launched. Even updated models (ps3 slim) output less heat than the originals b/c of improvements that became available since they were launched.

So your comment makes 0 sense.

Organization XII2376d ago

Considering that the PS3 is ridiculously outdated for today's standard, I say Nintendo is doing a great job now! Hail back to the fkn king of gaming industry!

NLGSean2376d ago

LOL... you people are hilarious.. The system is long...

Also... if this is the case... I guess the PSVita will blow up since its supposed to be like the PS3 and its about 6 times smaller than the PS3 system...

TheDareDevil2376d ago

Even though the hardware is good, it should be easy to develop for. Devs will take some time to max out the Wii U, but by that time we probably will see the X720 and the PS4, and the Wii U's graphical prowess may not matter any more.

JsonHenry2376d ago

I just hope they don't use 1080p as a crutch. Sure, things are sharper at higher rezs, but most people would rather see a game with lots more eye candy turned on running at 720p (native rez) than less eye candy at 1080p (native rez).

Theonetheonly2376d ago

nahh dude 1080 is well worth the trade. it amazes me to this day :)

iforgotmylogin2376d ago

i dont really get it, the system is powerful enough but graphics today dont really push the systems to its limits like it did in the gc ps2 xbox era.

like unless devs add some crazy particle effects, realtime lighting, superb ai and physics with top notch hd 3D textures and the ability to render all this in milliseconds i dont see anything impressive coming.

ive seen 3x top of the line graphics cards working together in sli mode with 2x of the fastest cpus working together and they provide spectacular visuals but nothing that pushes the limits of the hardware.

but who knows where 2-3 years will bring us

Treyb3yond2376d ago

Don't people get bored of nintendo rehashes though?

iforgotmylogin2376d ago

the same can be said for sony and microsoft.

and the answer is no

as long as the game is good and improves on certain aspects it will be loved

StarWolf2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

There has been 3 zelda console games since the launch of the Gamecube. 2001 (Each completely different)

There has been 2 pikmin games since 2001.

There has been 3 Starfox games on consoles since Nintendo 64. Each three were completely different.

Mario has had 3 big games on consoles. Sunshine, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 since 2001.
3 Smash bros game since Gamecube.
-------------
Call of Duty has had 5(+?) games in one console.
There has been 3 Uncharted games in one console.
There will be 3 Resistance games in one console.
There will be 8 Halo's in 2 consoles
4 Ratchet games in one console, 8 in 2 consoles

.. Yeah, Nintendo rehashes. In actuality, there is more hype for a Starfox or Smash bros, or pokemon (,etc )console game than any Playstation or Xbox franchise.

kneon2376d ago

If it's the controller that will make this console great then it's a fail. Only one such controller can be used according to Nintendo, that's a big negative. Plus the thing is just too big and clunky and looks uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time. Nintendo need to hire someone that understands ergonomics.

Scary692376d ago

From what I saw of the Wii U I don't think so. I also hate assumptions which is why this article fails. she said he said does not count as true.

frostypants2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

I'm officially calling this now:

They're going after a market they've already lost with a console that won't be enough to draw them back (50%? pfffffft...), and on top of that they're playing their hand too soon.

It's the Sega Saturn all over again. This thing is gonna crash and burn hard.

Brasi822376d ago

I'm looking forward to having the HUD in my hand more than anything. I hate playing games like Dragon Age, Grand Theft Auto, Mass Effect, and others having such large HUD's.

extermin8or2376d ago

@a_adji actually it can be quite an effective one, and manufacturing costs for vita haven't been specified we have no idea whether they will be losing on it or not, but if you get enough consoles out there and make a profit on all software sold overall you will make a profit :) thats the business model they and microsoft seem to be using and it seems to be working as both companies do rather well :p

Hopefully, 6 years on it should be alot more powerful...it's isn't exactly blitzing existing tech though. It's probably gonna be a low end gaming Pc by todays standard(which still is quite powerful)

Shok2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

Yea dude I just built a $400 PC (low-end) and I'm still able to max all of my games out. The improved textures and lighting and AA is amazing.

frostypants2376d ago (Edited 2376d ago )

I'd be interested to know what games you're talking about, because no way can a $400 PC max out the heavy hitters, unless you're running at sub-30fps.

LOGICWINS2376d ago

Congratulations...too bad it isn't 50% more exciting to the hardcore gamer than the PS3.

NESpower2376d ago

Speak for yourself, I own a PS3 and I am super excited to learn more about Wii U and what it will offer for games. I can see my money shifting towards it when it releases. In fact, you will be surprised just how many will be as well.

LOGICWINS2376d ago

Don't understand how you can be "super excited" to play multiplatform games that are already available on your PS3..but its your opinion.

Eamon2376d ago
