COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimes has stated that Wii U will not upscale Wii games to HD resolution, despite the new console boasting 1080p graphics.
I'm still so confused lol
no upscale : boooooo
Its the only reason why I waited for Wii U hoping Wii games get upscaled to HD! That really sucks considering the Dolphin emulator has been here for years! Its not even hardware its just software. Even single core PCs can do Wii HD. Also I think this Wii U controller has the potential to kill the 3DS. Why? At first glance everyone will think the Wii U is a portable gaming device that can run games on its own.
I find that flat out lazy to be honest. There is no reason for it not to be there. There are plenty of games that could look ALOT better being upscaled. Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers, Muramasa, Madworld, Twilight Princess and so on and so forth. it just reeks of laziness to not have some kind of upscaling or smoothing in there.
There isn't any hardware available to upscale games like that...yet. Were people actually waiting for Nintendo to invent the tech? If not, then you must've assumed that this is a possibility already. If it was, don't you think MS or Sony would've done it already instead of releasing HD remasters of last gen games? I'm sure someone is working on it but I wouldn't expect it to be Nintendo. Edit: Below, you're lying. I've played numerous PS2 games on the PS3 and none of them looked different on the PS3 as they did on the PS2. I hate when people lie like that.
Upscaling or not the PS3 DOES improve the look of PS2 games and even PSone games to a much lesser extent.(Launch PS3's do anyway which is what I have) At the VERY least the WiiU should have something similar but it doesn't and I find that incredibly lazy. It's another example of Nintendo being behind on the times. They now have a somewhat powerful console but don't do things with it that would be common sense.
@Active Reload The older PS3's did an amazing job upscaling PS2 games, since my 60GB died I had to resort to using the PS2 to play them, and they look like shit. Its the main thing I miss about the Phat's :(
Wii games were never HD. Therefore playing them on a Wii U is the same as playing them on a Wii cause the Wii games are Native ???? x 480 resolution, key WORD being NATIVE. Besides upscaling is only so the input signal to your TV matches what your TV wants to send out keyword being signal NOT changing resolution. If you paid extra cash for a "Upscaling DVD player you got RIPPED OFF cause most TV's have a chip in them that does this automatically. Hence a 1080p ONLY TV playing 720p video with out it looking fuzzy or huge black spaces top and bottom. like playing Sonic the Hedgehog on my emulator, I can AA and AF the hell out it but it's native res is still NOT HD even though my monitor is 1080P playing PS1 or PS2 games on the PS3 is better because the PS3 can add more Post-Processing effects to sharpen the image like MLAA.
Thats a bit poo considering that Dolphin or what ever it's called emulator does.
do you realize how cpu intensive it is to run dolphin on max settings? It takes more power than any of these consoles have Hell my computer chugs @ below amd phenom(tm) II x4 940 processor 3.01 Ghz And I still cant get more than 27 fps out of gamecube games. Its so cpu intensive you have no idea did the ps3 make ps2 games look like ps3 ones? Of course not. Same with psx and ps2. The kind of ram and cpu you need to really up things can only be found on the highest of end pcs @MartinZ stop trolling its getting annoying
Specs? Not implying that you're lying, just curious, as I'm thinking of buying a PC for gaming.
So YOU can talk crap to someone. But when someone does it to YOU it's trolling? LMAO whatever, bub.
Welp. After writing my previous comment I happen to come across more of MartinZ comments. So yeah... My bad, he WAS trolling.
What are your total specs Ram, GPU, etc. I can run Wii GC and PS2 games NO PROBLEM on a Dual core Phenom Black X2 550 and of course my Core i5 2500k. Also you gotta play with the Dolphine settings for best results. Make sure your Dolphine CPU settings are SSE2 and compiler. You have enough PC power just wondering do you have enough RENDERING (GPU) power.
Does everyone know that the console "can" boast up to 1080p resolution. And we do not even know if its native or not.
Yes all tech demos where running at 1080p.
ohh no HD re-releases incoming, even though I wouldnt mind windwaker :/
I'm sure they'll eventually release a zelda HD collection with wind waker, twilight princess and maybe skyward sword.
ill take it
I don't find the point in a HD version of Windwaker. The beauty about Cell-Shading is that it looks good and doesn't require fancy models. It's simple and clean, HD would just remove the jaggies which really aren't a problem, IMO.
I don't agree with that. Look at the difference between Naruto games on the Gamecube and PS2 and compare that to the Ultimate Ninja Storm games on the PS3 and 360. That's a good example of what HD graphics can do for cell-shaded graphics.
Acually they need to with all the good core games because they got lost in the sea of shovelware on the wii. Id love a twin snakes hd port from gamecube and metroid prime trilogy and zelda wind waker, twighlight princess, and skyward sword. That would be kick ass.
Not gonna lie. This is a big disappointment Nintendo! Still looking forward to WiiU though. *edit* Saying that however, The PS3 & 360 didn't upscale games until a firmware update was released so perhaps we'll get this feature later on.
so if i have my Wii-U connected via hdmi cable and throw in a wii game your telling me that its still going to look like $hit? Sounds like booty boy games are being played Nintendo. what are you guys not telling us?
Wow, i didn't think this was a big deal until you put it in perspective, that's retarded. Nintendo made so much money from the Wii sales, why can't they put in an upscaler?
This is confusing as ****.. Is this really a new console or just an add on with the Wii?? I guess u need two of those to play multi player with friends and family.. which could probably cost u an arms and legs to afford one..
That's stupid. Also, seems like it won't be backwards compatible with Gamecube games. Lame!!!
A lot of PS3 out in the market can't play PS2 games and it really hasn't hurt them.
True. But I really want to retire my PS2, and I'd like to retire my Wii as well. I don't want to have my Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, and PS2 out all at the same time! Although I do have one free HDMI port.
i really dont see why they couldnt have if it can run the wii tech it is basicly playing on gamecube tech and they could have just put the buttons on the new controller or classic controller, but still i dont see why they dont it is just a confusing choice
Exactly, although running at least 3 times faster, the architecture between the Wii and the Gamecube is very very similar! So, I don't understand why it's so much of a stretch! On a random note... really bummed they didn't announce a NA release for Last Story and Xenoblade!
LOL this is epic fail.
I'm afraid as much as I've been defending Nintendo today I have to agree. *cues the Price Is Right Losing Horn* Although I can understand the logic. If I don't already own a Wii and I can play Wii games in 1080p upscaled on the Wii U, why would I even ponder buying a Wii? It was clear in the presser that Nintendo intends to keep supporting the Wii (even though they treated it like a lost child at the presser.) Allowing Wii games to be played on the Wii U in upscaled 1080p graphic would kill the Wii dead INSTANTLY. It sucks, but I understand.
wait isnt there a way that some hdtv will upscale it if the image is over an hdmi cable, so if thats true the hdtv will scale it anyways
Nintendo just sucks. They have lost touch.
The PS3 doesn't have a hardware upscaler either, it leaves it to your television set. The 360 is the only current gen console with a hardware upscaler, that's why you see that every time you boot a game it runs 1080p, where PS3 games generally run 720p, as indicated by your TV. If your Wii U outputs a 480p resolution via HDMI, your TV will upscale it to it's native resolution, be it 720p or 1080p. I think what Reggie is saying is that the hardware will not include this feature, but instead let the signal be interpreted by your TV. If I'm not mistaken, a built in hardware upscaler is indeed a better option, because it would achieve an affect similar to the Wii emulator, changing the native output resolution of the game entirely. Overall, this feature is not really needed. It would be nice, but if it's going to increase the cost of the machine (which it would, totally screwing their plans for competitive pricing), it doesn't belong.
*goes to EB, takes all his wii hardware and put's it towards a new WIIU* there problem solved, I'm sure many will do the same. Why keep the old when you can trade it in and save a bunch on the new.
So you can keep your downloads and save files. Thought that one was obvious.
it's part of the nintendo network, they must have the ability to allow you to redownload games you've already bought on their network. like when you send your wii in for repairs or getting a replacement. this is a very good thing you brought up. we might need Nintendo to clarify this.
had to be expected anyway. nintendo NEVER give you what you want and plus, why would they do hardware upascale when there is no profit in that for them? they will re-release their games with hd just to rinse every penny from us. dont think im buying this garbage, had enough of the nintendo ride now.
