The Gamersheep.com writes "I came to E3 this year looking for a few different things and hopefully to answer a few questions. First among them is if Microsoft still cares about the hardcore market.
Lets count shall we? This list is talking console games. God of War games this gen? 1 Kill Zone games this gen? 2 Gran Turismo games this gen? 1 Uncharted games this gen? 3 Infamous games? 2 Little Big Planet games? 2 Metal Gear games? 1 Socom games? 2 Now lets take MS big games Gears of war games this gen? 3 Halo games this gen? 5 (once Halo 4 is released) Forza games this gen? 4 Fable games? 3 (once the journey is released) thats a pretty big difference if you ask me.
Microsoft probably purposely does this for business reasons. The MAJORITY of hardcore gamers this generation buy multiplatform games such as Call of Duty and Madden. Why spend money on exclusives when the majority of your fanbase will buy multiplatform games? Because Microsoft markets COD as an exclusive, they have the luxury of piggybacking on two or three major exclusive franchises. With COD, Halo, and Gears, M$ pleases the MAJORITY of their hardcore fanbase, so now they want to focus on Kinect to get casual gamers on board. It may not be what the informed hardcore 360 minority wants...but it makes perfect business sense on Microsoft's part.
xD dont forget BF3 :D
"The MAJORITY of hardcore gamers this generation buy multiplatform games such as Call of Duty and Madden." my fail o meter reading : OVER 9000 !! Like really ?? madden and COD ? hardcore ?? @ topic hardcore gamers want MORE more verity and more new things halo is nice but milking it and feeding the fans same thing over and over and over gets old with times killing ensemble studio = NOT COOL and NOT caring for hardcore gamers @ below hard core gamers (as i see it) are all about good fun games WITH NO GIMMICK and NO BS just straight to the point point a to b good game good graphics good mechanics engaging story and good MP and most certenly no rehashes AND NO BROKEN GAMES like COD and Madden madden > played by sports fan which most of the time they play nothing but that COD > what to say more ?? its COD like the HUGE aim assist alone can make it a casual game and about those millions here look at this http://www.youtube.com/watc... http://www.youtube.com/watc... wow look at those views im sure ppl that listen to this are pretty "hardcore" music ppl i mean they listen to classics like this you just cant be wrong lol COD is main stream just like what you see on those vids now a days the ""cool"" boys play COD and its all hype i know ppl that know nothing about video games yet they know COD like apple stuff even if it sucks and cost 1000$ ppl well buy it just like that
@captain obvious- Just curious. Whats your definition of a hardcore game? "hardcore gamers want MORE" Correction: SOME hardcore gamers want MORE..the MAJORITY don't care. If what you said was true, games like COD wouldn't be selling more and more every year. Your not looking at the big picture. You think that the only people who are considered "hardcore" are the gaming minority who keep themselves up to date on gaming news on N4G. Not the case. There are 20-30 million COD fans out there who spend at least a dozen hours a week playing COD..who are you to say they can't be considered hardcore? "hard core gamers (as i see it) are all about good fun games WITH NO GIMMICK and NO BS" The impression that a game has a "gimmick" or is "BS" is entirely subjective. By your logic, Uncharted 2 isn't a hardcore game because Situational Awareness was considered to be "bullshit" by many gamers. I just wanted to show you that the definition of a hardcore gamer is subjective.
To be fair, Microsoft is simply concerned with one thing and one thing only, the bottom line. In other words...$$$. I can't really fault them for that (who doesn't want to stick with what's profitable) but while I don't blame them, I won't commend them the way I will Sony with regards to fresh and unique first party content aimed at HC gamers. One thing I REALLY appreciate with Sony is their willingness to take risks (or at the very least, back studios that are looking to try new things) with regards to software. Games like Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian may not be guaranteed to sell gazillions of copies like say Halo or Gears, but it gives gamers a chance to take a crack at something fresh and unique for a change. Hell it isn't exactly like every other game that's released these days isn't an FPS or TPS anyway, and if that's what you really want, there's always Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, SOCOM and a host of multiplats out there for you to enjoy.
I play the hard core shooters and hack and slash but I play them at my own casual pace. A core gamer should not be defined by the games they play but by the amount of dedication they put into playing games. At least....it used to be that way. So if we used the old way of thinking you can have yourself some hardcore angry birds players out there. Or those who play more tetris than even the best killzone player. But because they dont play the same games as the ones that call themselves 'core'...they are branded forever as casuals. Guess what people. We all started out casual gamers. Not a person alive was born with a controller in their hand. It was given to us and we were shown how to play on the simplest level. We had to aspire to be better but we should never forget our casual roots.
Don't pay no mind to this reporter. LOL. The name says it all. Gamersheep is an understatement.
People People PEOPLE, these sections are for COMMENTS NOT ESSAYS. Now what you guys are posting maybe well written frankly im not going to read your post if its two three paragraphs long. Hit post too soon. Sorry.
Forza only has 3 releases this gen. Forza 2, Forza 3, and the yet to be released Forza 4. God of War should be up to 3 also. God of War 3, God of War 1 & 2 HD collection, and the newly announced PSP God of War HD remake PS3 game collection.
He didn't count remakes or HD collection. If he did he would of added the halo 1 HD remake. Forza should be 3 once forza 4 comes out.
I see. I guess Sony and MS shouldn't count the sales for their releases either then. lol
Their are other games MS have that not on that list...
While you're list is convincing, this is about E3 2011. In which case, all you had to do was point at Kinect. MS, like Logic said, has a very different sense of "hardcore" Multiplatform titles are core titles too, and MS knows that their audience buys a lot of them. Hence, their population of core gamers are happy with these titles. That is just their strategy. As for "caring", I think it's evident that MS is trying to branch the 360 into a wider product but they are definitely skimping out on delivering, themselves, to the core gamers.
Exactly. In a way, Microsoft DOES care about the hardcore in the sense that they've realized that MOST hardcore gamers opt to play multiplatform games, as opposed to exclusives. In this respect, the Microsoft mentality is: "Most of out hardcore consumers buy Call of Duty every year. Okay, lets give them what they want!" It actually isn't Microsoft's fault that the 360 has a lack of exclusives, its more so the fault of the MAJORITY of the 360's audience who vote with their dollars that they aren't interested in exclusive games. Why invest in more exclusives when its OBVIOUS that the majority of your audience doesn't care about them?
If 360 owners had more exclusives to play, they'd buy them. Its just not ms's model for now. Killer instinct gets put on hold for some more casual kinect stuff from rare. Ki would appease the foundation whereas kinect x will lure the casuals. Ms chose the casuals. They're definitely backing their hardware and thats not to be scoffed at but the core/foundation type 360 owner has become collateral damage for the forseable future anyhow. Sad but its ironic how the same fans who defended kinect by lording its sales now have to sit and watch whilst sesame street and some disney game push games that might appeal more to them to the side. The damn thing isnt even as accurate as the wii remote and is still very limited in its application. Its almost like Ms has shuned us for our younger siblings and our parents
I was with you until you listed little big planet it may have sold a lot but it doesnt belong in a talk about hardcore gaming my main man
If you ask me, Microsoft is pretty happy with their overall lineup if you add multiplatform games to the list. Now frankly, I don't care if games I want to play on Xbox 360 but more variety would've been welcome when it comes to exclusive games. Also, they especially seem to forgot Japan completely this year.
Before people complained how kiddy and casual Kinect is, and how it lacked core games. Now MS is pushing Kinect with core games, and people still complain I guess you can't please everyone
lets see gow 3, gow 1 hd, gow 2hd, gow ghost of sparta hd, gow chains of olympus hd so thats 5 gow games. 3 uncharteds plus the vita 1 so 4. 3 resistances plus one psp and one vita so 5. Lbp has 2 on ps3 one on psp one on vita so 4 games. What is your point? Lets see ms non "milked" ip's Lost odyssey blue dragon alan wake kameo viva pinata 1 and 2 too human splinter cell l4d 1 and 2 exc exc exc
what ever helps you sleep.. you have to admit that ms is lacking in its variety of games... sony may have alot...but different experiences.. gow on ps3 and gow on psp are two different types of game in my book, and you cant count a remake.... psp games do not equal ps3 games...two separate gaming systems....and the same goes with the psvita... so if we take away all the PSV and PSP games and PS3 HD Remakes...we have 9 ps3 games.... and then we have: 2 hd remakes on one disk 4 psp games 2 psv games
Misterhbk purposely left out the PSP games because then his argument would be invalid.
Well, I like Gears of War. And I'll probably get ME3 on my 360. That's about it.
@ bruddahmanmatt List of remade games for the PS3- God of war HD collection Sly Cooper HD Ico and Shadow of colossus HD. Siren HD and WarHawk remake. This is definitely not 'Fresh and unique'.
One thing we can all agree is that microsoft loves money more
don't we all
Even am sony guy but they ain't here for charity too!
well if u open business, a big business infact, and you don't care about money? Than what is the point of going into business?
Microsoft loves money, yes. But...Then again, isn't that what most big companies love?
At the core, isn't the point of living trying to amass a fortune without dieing?
they dont care about the core...just games they know will sell like a sequel.....If they made too human 2 i would love it
360 still has quality titles despite this kinect garbage. Still enough core experiences to justify a purchase of the console. Ps3 and Vita is where it is at now though.
Yes. Thats why their conference at the biggest Gaming event is a kinetic roadshow. In x360 fans land. It is true.
Then why did they show Kinect games? I was hoping more from Microsoft and Sony.
No way! MS just think about the money!
me 2 both were crap imho
Give us some that aren't Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza then. With that said the CE remake and Halo 4 are fucking gigantic win.
If I get my gears, my red dead, my mass effect, my In game music, my portal, my final fantasy and dozens other, than I'm happy with my xbox. It's not like mp games aren't worth buying.
Good point. People always forgot multi games and never consider them but they need some exclusive games love! Sure there are TONS of multiplates coming this year but the ps3 have em + a dozen of exclusive games!
I like to say that there is no hope for the 360 in core exclusive games. It all about kinect this! Kinect that! WTF MICROSOFT?? its ok to appeal to the casual crowd but to release 1000 causal games vs 3 exclusive core games is shit!
sure if it takes only a few core games to grab the antention.... i guess they care.
Your right, they have gone in two different directions, MS went casual, Sony stayed mostly to the core. If you call relying on multiplats as "being core" than what the hell is the point of a hardcore gamer buying a 360 over a PS3? To pay 60 bucks for cross game chat? Yea, 360 is technically hardcore but its bare minimum, the 360 has turned into the launch version of the Wii except it at least has good 3rd party support. So Xbox 360 fanboys, which console is more hardcore again?
People tend to over exaggerate MS's transition to Casual. They are catering to both the core and casual crowd now. Nintendo opened the door to non gamers and MS and Sony followed. MS came with something different while Sony utilized similar tech with the move... I've always thought a console's success depends on 3rd party development and MS has that support. While they do not have as many exclusives as Sony, MS has a couple extremely high level exclusives in GOW/Halo. Adding on to that is Forza and Fable, MS had the ability to invest in a new tech and focus on another audience while also focusing on their core exclusive titles instead of acquiring new ones. I thought their conference was half and half core/casual and not all casual. They introduced Ryse, they have a game with Sega that is supposed to be hard core and they are implementing kinect functions (not required) to core titles. There is nothing wrong with MS expanding their audience while "maintaining" their core games. Obviously, it has worked for xbox as they are doing quite well. Why would I buy an xbox game over ps3? I tend to believe that live performs much better on the xbox than PSN. I have played three different titles online on both consoles: Madden 11, Street Fighter 4, and Call of duty. By far, connection quality and use on live is much better than the PSN. The live interface is better than PSN. The ease of use of live is better than PSN. Yes, it cost us 30-60 a year for live, but we get what we pay for.... In terms of graphics, the quality of graphics between the two systems for multiplat games is not significantly different either way. For a long time, games performed better on xbox, but apparently that is changing. In my experience, the difference wasnt big enough for me to pick one system over another...The thing that i base my choice on is the online experience and Xbox IMO is by far a better experience. So if i were looking for a multi play game, i usually go to xbox...
Of course they do, but they have so many franchises and seem to be pushing so few. I was hoping to see an Alan Wake 2 or PGR5 announcement at their press conference. I know there's Gears 3, Forza 4 and Halo 4 to look forward to, but Microsoft seem to be getting away with doing 'just enough' to appease core gamers. I'm surprised they didn't plug XBLA at all, some of the console's hidden gems are on there but they remain hidden to the mainstream media.
A couple of online streams plugged summer of arcade before the conference, but yes I agree Microsoft should have showed XBLA some love during its event. That being summer of arcade looks extremely solid this year.
Who gives a fuck about "milking"? I WANT sequels to Gears, Halo, Crackdown, Project Gotham, Forza, Fable, Crimson Skies, Alan Wake, Lost Odyssey, Conker, Banjo, Kameo, Perfect Dark, etc. The only people who don't want sequels to those games are butthurt/jealous $ony fantrolls. The more the exclusives, the better. In that case, "milk away!" ;]
We all now why you are a lone bubble now...
and why you're on your way
Okey can someone please enlighten me about the Core gamers, hardcore gamers and casual gamer stuff because some people are all mixing them up and I just loss track about it.
Yeah, I used to be somewhat of an xbox fanboy but honestly I gave up on them. I still love my xbox but seriously MS is now trying to target non-core and core gamers. That's good but there focusing to much on non-core gamers and making pointless games for Kinect. Really sad about E3. The only exclusives I have to look forward to are Halo 4, Halo CE, Forza 4, and Gears 3. Needless to say there are a ton of awesome multiplatform games coming out that make up for it :D
2006 Gears of war 2007 Halo, Forza 2008 Fable, Gears of war 2009 halo gears 2010 Halo, Fable 2011 Gears of war, Forza 2012 halo fable, disney and sesame street LOLOLOLOL Microsft just Trolled everyone
Real gamers want more than just Gears and Halo ! They want real RPGs like Lost Odyssey and Fable. Look at Skyrim, that game will be GOTY and for good reason- because they did not radically change their style of games, didn't dumb them down and improved and expanded upon them. Unlike Fail-bleh, LOL.
Yea Real gamers do want games but gears and halo are not the only games that are playable. A real gamer wouldnt make a big deal on exclusives. They play good games and if they happens to be exclusive, great
They care about the hardcore? Yeah... lets make every new I.P a Kinect experience and just have Gears, Forza and Halo to satisfy the core... There is nothing new for the core Microsoft! You told us a few years back that you were all about the core... Thanks for Halo, but everything else was shown already except for the new Kinect games.
