Microsoft's E3 Surprise is Not Gaming - Will IPTV + Diamond Fees Save Them?

This podcast reveals the potential rumors being broadcast throughout the internet, and addresses the multimedia push from Microsoft as irrelevant by comparison to the stride of other companies. Their E3 show for 2011 is called into question and analysis is done on their overall strategic stance this year and in years' past. (Diamond Fees, E3, Industry, IPTV, Microsoft, Tech, Xbox 360)

Microsoft should focus on hardcore gaming for E3.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

@iamnsuperman No doubt man. Definitely. Thanks for the listen and feedback!

Yeah MS, what's up with the games? It's not like L.A. Noire, RAGE, SKYRIM, DARKSOULS, WITCHER 2 are on or coming to the Xbox 360. Oh... wait...
Biggest  +   719d ago
Remember when people were saying "BluRay? I want games, Sony!" How about when people said "I don't need no stinkin internet browser! I have a PC!" It's funny because those same people are going Lady Gaga over half-cable and Kinect.
Active Reload  +   719d ago
It's ok, I damn sure ain't about to spend $300 on another console to play average exclusives, lol.
shoddy  +   719d ago
Sound like to you exclusive is nothing special.
Why play more variety when you can play less right?
NYC_Gamer  +   719d ago
they will continue to let 3rd party software/xbl features move the console
iamnsuperman  +   719d ago
I like they are adding services but like mentioned in the podcast TVs do it already (and in the UK with a service called freeview which is free) kind of makes this redundant in the UK (I hear the US has expensive cable so probably useful there). Microsoft still need to focus on the hardcore like you said. It seems they are stretching the Xbox brand. I wouldn't have minded if they announced this at another press conference and not at E3 (if the rumours are true). They need to announce some exclusives

"save" them? I didn't know they needed saving. For me, this could be cool if the programming/features are similar to my satellite provider.

Who says they won't have more than one surprise? Sure, IPTV and Kinect will have its place in their conference but that doesn't mean they won't have hardcore titles on show as well. At least I hope :)
Chaostar  +   719d ago
I''ll be honest I only listened to the first few minutes but they make a few good points.

Best of them is that on demand TV is already a part of lots of different hardware i.e even TVs have it nowadays, and it's free.

MS will have to give a VERY good reason for people to pay extra. It's possible they have a ton of exclusive content but I doubt gamers will pay extra on top of xbl fees unless they manage to grab a LOT of incentive.

This may be a big announcement in their press conference but he acts like this is their only announcement. I don't see why people have a problem with consoles becoming more multi-functional; the stats show that people use their consoles for entertainment other than gaming. This guy comes across more as a disgruntled fanboy throwing a fit as opposed to someone more focused on generating interesting debate.
ash_divine  +   719d ago
My only concern with consoles becoming multimedia devices is that Gaming(what the consoles were originally intended for) could get pushed into the background because of it.

I get the feeling that this is most people's concern. Because you have to admit, Microsoft seem to be getting less and less interested in the video game industry.(Especially the hardcore side of the industry.)
NYC_Gamer  +   719d ago
gaming will never get pushed back long as 3rd party studios exist
BabyTownFrolics  +   719d ago
nyc gamer dont even try to talk sense.

if your not bashing MS then your not a true gamer on N4G.
FlashXIII  +   719d ago
You're right that gaming won't get pushed back because of 3rd party studios but ultimately why stick with an xbox and play just those 3rd party studio games when you can get a ps3 and play all those plus a whole load of great exclusives spread out across the year?

Unfortunately this gen microsoft can get away with shunning their hardcore gamers and trying to expand their brand however they have a lot of convincing to do if they want me to buy their next console.
ash_divine  +   719d ago
@BabyTownFrolics

Oh grow up will you? No one bashed Microsoft (your fanboyism is making you paranoid lol). People are allowed to voice their opinion, because not everyone worships their console.(or the company that created it.)

fanatics, sheesh.

@NYC_Gamer

At least you didn't get all defensive, but I still don't really understand the point you're trying to make. If Microsoft relies solely on third parties then what incentive will people have to buy the console?(as opposed to the competition)

and I think you (and Babytown) misunderstood what I was saying. I was simply saying that I'm worried that Microsoft will get too invested into other ventures (such as IPTV) to really focus on games. I think anyone who enjoys the 360 can agree that that would be a bad thing.
Alos88  +   719d ago
Dear Microsoft,
We don't watch your conferences for BS like "integrated media" or "convergence" or any other meaningless marketing phrases and half baked concepts.
We watch for the GAMES.
Please remember this.

Hey maybe Playstation will get Virgin Media and we can merge the console wars with the TV wars lol. Oh god imagine the comments here ^_^
movements  +   719d ago
I'd said it before and I'll say it again: Microsoft should focus on what made the Xbox 360 what it is today: The Hardcore! If they don't, they'll lose them and regret it!
Rainstorm81  +   719d ago
to me it seems they are very happy with grabbing the casual public's eye, to me it just seems like MS is taking an approach like they have core fans in the bag.

I just doesnt seem like they are worried about growth of the core audience.
1998gamer  +   719d ago
That's a big problem though, If you lose the hardcore who will be your early adopters when you release a new console. Cause casuals sure as hell aren't going to be the first to buy new systems @ a premium price tag. Then you have new Ips which are also mainly supported by the hardcore and not casuals.

Very short term thinking IMO.

Move sold over 8 million and got every months casual crap+ hardcore games with optional move support , so show us how it failed . Back to back release of stuff like KZ3 , virtua tennis and socom on move is you definition of failure ?? I'd wish everything that failed fared like that

Kinec have been a success so far , whatever i think of it .

Motion is there to stay and is getting stronger

I think Microsoft see a predominent focus on the hard core gamers as not providing them with the means of increasing growth, and, broadening their user base. Even though the Wii pretty much turned its back on the hard core, it has sold over 80 million consoles, over 30 million more than the Xbox 360 and PS3. The increased focus on Kinect and non-gaming entertainment is a means to an end for Microsoft. Kinect is also a unique point of differentiation for Microsoft as Sony and Nintendo have nothing like it (for now).

I would like more focus on the hard core (non-Kinect) games but I just don't think it will happen. Yes, there will be the Halo/Gears of War/Forza/Fable games, but probably not a lot of new non-Kinect IP's.

If you look at the sony Line UP, talking exclusives it just blows the 360 out.
cereal_killa  +   719d ago
I don't understand how anyone fanboy/troll or not, is not getting pissed at M$ for the route they seem to be going. 2 "REAL" exclusives a year with multiplats to fill the voids the rest of the time, Moving all there focus and what little 1st party support to circus style kiddie games for kinect. I'm truly convinced right now that the 360 is on its last legs and a new system will be shown and released next year if not a controller like device (like move/wii) will be shown for Kinect. M$ needs to stop pouring money into buying stuff like Skype and adding useless junk to Kinect making it one giant remote control for your tv and start buying some studios to make real game for the hardcore.
AKissFromDaddy  +   719d ago
This is unfortunate. MS will lose people when gamers realize they can play exclusives + 3rd party multiplayer games for 'free' on other platforms(PS3,PC,Cafe).

I realized this late last year and after owning a ps3 for the last three months now, I can safely say it's one of the best gaming decisions I've made in the last five years. LBP2, Killzone 3 and soon infamous 2 as well as all the great other multiplatform games I've been playing like homefront and MK.
FlashXIII  +   719d ago
If microsoft's main focus for this E3 isn't gaming related, I will have lost whatever little faith that was retained after seeing the abysmal E3 showing last year. I used to be such a big fan of the xbox and had so much faith in microsoft now I'm reduced to fools hope. If they fail again this year the only reason I will be keeping my xbox is because my friends are all on xbl.
AKissFromDaddy  +   719d ago
My friends weren't paying for my subscription......
I was the biggest 360 fan in the world from 2007-mid 2010 but I didn't pay for my XBL subscription renewal when I saw MS E3 2010. Sony's conference was world's better.

3 months later, I have a PS3 and I sign into XBL once in a blue moon to say high to my friends. This summer, I'm building my BEAST RIG PC, too. I wouldn't be doing this if I was satisfied with MS, but I'm also grateful because I have PS3 and I know how a PC works now.

Sony has be on an onslaught with exclusives + free online. Steam makes PC gaming the best. Gaming RIGS are expensive but if consoles can play games, budget PCs can do just better + they're PCs.

MS forgets 360 is for gaming + new exclusives. Its unfortunate if people support this because 360 isn't worth it.

Kind of a fanboy mind set to claim a company has nothing to offer just because people are angry and jealous of something they don't have. Shame on the media for provoking this idiotic behavior from fanboys.

Not surprising there is nothing but Sony fanboys in here complaining about the imaginary lack of offerings on the. 360

Advancing XBL means Microsoft isn't focused on anything else? :p

I'm guessing Sony supporting media and troll sites that take advantage of fanboys will be cashing in on the current emotional state of these people caused by the recent news showing how Microsoft is widening the gap at a such a fast rate the gap will be the biggest it has ever been in no time.

Look if I were a ps3 fanboy I would be angry and scared too trying to bash Microsoft and way I could just to release pent up frustration.

Putting the 360 in one of the largest consumer markets on the planet as the most advanced set top box the world has ever seen won't be fair to the competition as the 360 will sell millions because of a entirely different market. PS3 used movies as a added benefit and the 360 will use cable.

But Sony has a wealth 1st/3rd party exclusives AND the same 3rd party games as the 360 (minus Kinect) AND the similar services (Netflix, Hulu, FB integration, Twitter from the browser) without charging for it. And when they get attacked, there's not an ounce of compassion from so-called gamers (who really only play the 360). When and yes, I said when, XBL is attacked, I will feel as bad for MS and I did for Sony. I play games, not companies.

Well, at least The Witcher 2 is coming to the 360. Some quality new exclusives would be very much welcome, though. Not betting on that one, but hopefully they have a few surprises up their sleeve.
Raven_Nomad  +   719d ago
As Microsoft said, "Believe everything you read on the internet".

They can announce upgrades and features like this all they want, but you can expect a hell of a lot of games at the forefront as well. The more content they add to XBL the better IMHO. I hate high cable bills and separate boxes. If the Xbox 360 worked as a cable box then that's less clutter and everything HD.
Brutallyhonest  +   719d ago
Oh really Raven?

We can expect a hell of a lot of games from MS?
It's 6/4/2011. We are half way through this calendar year. Where are these games of which you speak? Seriously. I'm not trolling. The 360 is my main gaming platform and I am asking you a honest question.

I get so tired of hearing wait until E3. Last E3 was a disaster for their core audience and this year, other than multiplats, has been equally as bad if not their worst year since they entered the industry.

You really think they are magicians and they are going to pull a rabbit out of their hats? I highly doubt it. Why? Because nearly everything unveiled at E3 shows are usually leaked pre E3 year after year. I am sure there will be a couple surprises but will they be core game related and will they be worth the wait? I seriously, as an Xbox 360 fan, doubt it.

I hope I am wrong but I doubt that I am.

Do you seriously think that Microsoft will offer a service comparable to dedicated cable providers? Do you seriously think that Microsoft has "a hell of a lot of games at the forefront" this year? People said it last year and you got Kinect. People are saying it again this year. Hopefully it actually happens this time.
dcbronco  +   719d ago
All of the people that believe this is a mistake need to think about possibilities and not just excepting what is handed to you. If MS can get content providers to allow their content through Live, they have Skype and they have games. The 360 would become an all encompassing machine. Your cable, phone and gaming would all be done throw your 360. Pay for internet and you have everything else built into your 360.

Why pay Comcast $170 a month for three things when I can pay MS $60 a month for Live and Comcast or Verizon $40 for HS Internet and save $70 and still get the same content. And MS can offer the content for less because their income is diversified.

A regular provider makes money from cable, movie rentals/sales and phone service. MS would make money from all of those plus DLC, games and game related items. It's like adding a multi-billion dollar industry to a multi-billion dollar industry. It would also make the 360 into a set-top box/DVR that you would already own and marketable to the general public. That worked okay for the Wii. Cable users are a much bigger segment of the world than gamers. I also believe MS is about to announce a price cut of sorts. I think Kinect will now be included in every 360 at $229 and $299 price points. MS makes enough on the 360 per console and Kinect is not nearly as expensive to make as people think. At this point, they should be able to include it and still make a small profit. They can make up the difference with unit sales and royalties.
Biggest  +   719d ago
HA! You expect Live to stay at $60? They raised it $10 because of already free services like ESPN. Microsoft isn't in the business of adding more features for free.
Boon Tarkas  +   719d ago
Good point.
Bzone24  +   719d ago
Lol @ Biggest. You are confused. Xbox Live isn't $60 a month. He's talking about paying $60 a month for these services and being able to save money over paying Comcast for cable.
dcbronco  +   719d ago
MS raised the fee to accommodate Activision according to rumors.

I admit I should have been more specific but it should be obvious I meant $60 per month. Which would be cheap compared to what most are paying for cable and phone now with HD and unlimited national calling. But they would have the advantage of including video calling. Video calling hasn't caught on yet. But if it was built into your cable box, you might use it.
KingSlayer  +   719d ago
If you're paying Comcast $170 a month, you're wasting money.
dcbronco  +   719d ago
Phone, HD Movie channels, 20mb internet speed cost. It would be less if there was some competition in this area. But it is what it is for right now.

How many games will be released on the 360 this year? It seems all of the games that people are really playing will be on the 360. People are looking forward to MW3, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Assassins Creed, Skyrim, Ghost Recon, FIFA 12, Forza. What games are their that you want that they don't have. Both systems have exclusives. But acting as if MS won't be releasing any games this year is silly. You get games. All of the ones anyone actually plays. Plus IPTV. So you're complaining about getting extra? Come on dude.

If MS can kill my need for Comcast I'm in.
Boon Tarkas  +   719d ago
Good points.
Pyscho_Mantis  +   718d ago
MW3 only mate....Battlefield 3 is looked forward for the PC, Mass Effect has gone multi, Gears of War true but equally looked forward is Uncharted 3, Assassins creed sells better on Playstation (was guna be PS exclusive is Sony did not screw up) Skyrim will go to the platform which offers exclusive dlc. FIFA has always sold way more on Playstation and is synonymous with PS users. LMAO at forza...dude that game aint popular its not like Gran Turismo or Need for Speed in popularity and will sell even worse due to the amount of games coming this fall.
dcbronco  +   718d ago
@Pyscho

It's not an exclusivity contest. It's a matter of if there are games to be played. And there are. Millions will buy Battlefield because it's not COD. Just like millions bought Medal of Honor. Multi-platform doesn't mean it will no longer be on the 360. As for sales, PS3 has games that do better on it. But more games do better on 360. COD sells far more on 360 than FIFA sells more on PS3. But to laugh at Forza as if it doesn't outsell many of the exclusives Sony fans brag about. It outsells all but Uncharted and GT. So according to you Killzone and LBP aren't that popular either. How much do those exclusives really matter from a sales standpoint?

Actually what are all of these games Sony has coming out this year? You have Uncharted and Twisted. What else? MS has Forza, Gears and maybe Halo and Kingdoms. Gears and Forza(over 4 million in sales beats Killzone and LBP by a lot) will go sell for sell with Sony's two and Halo will sell 7 or 8 million and put MS way over the top.

Dude, for all of the bragging about Sony exclusives, they don't sell units or consoles. All of the games that really sell are on both consoles save Uncharted and GT. But Gears, Forza, Halo and Fable all consistently hit the 3 or 4 million or more mark.

People have to stop parroting nonsense that misinformed people spout. Not saying you, but so many have said "MS has no games" that it has taken on it's own life and people have started to believe it's fact when all evidence makes it clear that it isn't.

Forgot God of War. But still. What does Sony have this year?

Now that M$ is trying to make the 360 more than just a gaming console it's cool.
I hope they have more than this, because gamers want games.
