Age of Empires Online made available on August 19th

Microsoft (together with Gas Powered Games) has finally developed a new game in the AoE series, Age of Empires Online. The game will be a fully functional MMORTS and feature various tools for social interaction and casual/addictive gameplay akin to games by Zynga. I really hope this game doesn't stray too far from the format. I really liked AOE2.

It's meant to play as a cross between AoE2 and AoE3 - but closer to the 2nd with the added city meta game where you can craft equipment.

It is just like the originals. The only difference is that you have a main town that lets you pick and choose what quests/missions you want to play as well as your townsfolk will give you missions and rewards for playing and winning. Also you can build structures in your home town that let you craft items that you can sell or equip your units/structures with to improve their stats.

The actual gameplay itself is exactly like the originals.

I'm really looking forward to this, unlike the majority here.

Is there a single player portion to the game. I love the AoE series but I refuse to buy it if it just multiplayer.

Probably not considering it's online.

You should be able to do some single player campaigns online against AI, but there is no offline mode.

You don't have to buy it though since it's free to play.
