But in an interview with The Wall Street Journal Monday, Mr. Kato denied that he was talking specifically about a successor to PS3.
“This is a good opportunity to clarify this. Some people misread what I said,” he said. He added that the only new platform he specifically mentioned in his reply to the analyst’s question was the NGP, and that the rest was a “general statement.”
We're not idiots you know...
Announce a next gen console too early or too late has huge impact on current platform sales.
That's how it works.
Hardware is another story. I think they don't want to announce the PS4 until they're in a position to sell the PS3 at a bargain price. That way the PS3 will continue to sell as it will be too good of a deal to pass up, like the PS2 has been doing since the introduction of the PS3.
To keep selling PS3's & games to the not so hardcore audience through to the very casual audience entails a certain ammount of shoosh from said companies.
I could go around & say to casual friends, "don't buy a PS3 or 360, as new ones are 12months away...but they would be less inclined to listen to me, as opposed to it coming straight from the camels mouth. So Sony won't say very much, apart from what they have to, so as not to alienate future hardware buyers, as well as future & current software buyers.
