I dont know. The series hasn't been the same since the Zenithan Saga. I never played DW5 cause it never released in the states till recently, but the NES versions to me are the best ones ever. Dragon Warrior 7 wasn't that good, and Dragon Quest 8 felt only half way done. It seems like the better the graphics a game is, the less thought and effort is put into the story, exploration, and adventure. Dragon Warrior 4 is huge compared most games out.

dq 8 felt half way done??????????

The game was 100+ hours long ........ and had the most believable and likable characters in an open world game Ive seen.

I totally agree with stealth500k. DQ 8 was one of my favorite games ever.

(does this series need more love? I wouldn't call myself a fan because I really haven't played anything in this series, but I know I'll eventually will)
Well lets see...
From what I know
I-III on the Game Boy are the definitive versions
I'm not sure about IV-VI, but I plan to get the DS versions (I've been waiting for Square to reprint V, that game was inflated by private sellers all over online!)
Of course for VII-VII there's only one version, but finding VII at a good price and condition will be like hell. Also I own IX already, but i don't feel it is right to just jump in at IX (even if each installment is stand alone)
Maybe I'll go through a hunt this summer lol. since (I hope) my nostalgia levels have sky rocketed because my cousin let me borrow Chrono Cross which I never really played, I only really watched my cousin play it :3
