Chris Taylor on why PC gaming is bigger than ever

PCGAMER spoke to Chris Taylor recently, and asked him how he feels about the state of PC gaming. ‘Good’ would be an understatement. Chris designed two of the world’s cleverest strategy games: Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.

More recently, he and his company Gas Powered Games took over development of Age of Empires Online, a free-to-play version of the old classic. Here are his thoughts on why the platform has never been stronger (Dev, Gas Powered Games, Industry, PC)

I just bought a i5 laptop not for gaming but just internet and work so I went for a model with an integrated graphicscard. Eventhough I decided to give some 2008-2009 games a try on it, and they run pretty smooth. They look way better than their 360 counterparts and I was pretty amazed. (Been an xbox (360) gamer for about 10 years now) I'm not going to skip to pc-gaming yet, but when this generation ends. It's no more console gaming for me. It's just way to expensive ( Games are higher priced, Live subscription and expensive DLC) and will switch to a decent gaming PC. Still I might throw in a Wii on the side to keep the misses happy :)

@plbelanger, as do I. I became a convert in 2002 when a friend introduced me to BF1942 and 64 player matches. I've been primarily a PC gamer ever since. However, I do own a PS3 as a "sidekick" so I don't miss out on console exclusives. Just wish some of them would come over to the PC with better graphics and possibly mods (like Red Dead Redemption would be great on PC).

PC Gaming 4 Life!
The PC Gaming market has been brought back to the forefront again thanks in part to 3 minutes of a Battlefield 3 teaser trailer (a.k.a. the Shot heard round the world) no doubt!

PC Gaming was never ever dying but just going through a transition from retail to Digital, from Dx9 to a sucky DX10 to a DX11 that works, from classic SP/MP formats to your studio better have a strong MMO, from pay 2 play to Free 2 play with micro transactions.

All in all Developers now understand these new ways to be successful in PC gaming but even then just make a quality title that utilizes the features PC Gamers want and you will be successful. Just look at Minecraft. It doesn't get any easier than that.

PC Gamer since Doom! Exclusive PC Gamer since Half Life 2.

I'm still saddened and disgusted at what happened to SupCom2. Anyway, Age of Empires online is actually good. It's a mix between AoE1 simple units and random map generator, AoE2's pathfinding, AoM walls and trade, and AoE3's hometown mechanics.

Waiting for HotS to make SC2 Zerg better instead of the OP fungal growth bandaid.

PC gaming is were its at right now, still as strong as ever.

i was was PC gaming in 2000 then went to console till last year. i dont look back or miss console gaming.

the community is a lot better on the pc. when people talk of the witcher 2 going to console us pc gamers are happy for CDP to get some more money and a bigger audience. yet a console gamer loosing an exclusive would end in a war like it always does.

the way exclusives should work is development wise. let it be dev'd on your gaming device then let everyone else share the goodness......console gamers need to chill out a little as you have a bad name of been immature £*(K$

Rumors of PC gaming's death have been greatly exaggerated. :)

I love PC gaming and the truth is that PC gaming has been growing in recent years.

Hi chris.

So why did you make SC2 the way it is?

Bye.

PC gamer in heart too. It's so much better than consoles apart from the couch (and yet i've got a good chair :p)
