2D Word-Of-Mouth Hit Terraria Sells 200K In Nine Days

Gamasutra: "Re-Logic's exploration-based 2D online game Terraria passed its 200,000 sales milestone Tuesday, the company said.

The game, often described as a mixture of the exploration aspects of Nintendo's Metroid series and the craftability of Minecraft -- was released on May 16 for Windows platforms via Steam, and has become a word-of-mouth hit attracting a lot of attention in the consumer press."

Can someone tell me if this is fun to play solo? My friends don't play PC games :(

humado2278d ago

is this better than minecraft?

btw i wish minecraft was on steam :(

Takoulya2278d ago

In some aspects, yes. The adventure and combat is brilliant in the game, and the crafting is expansive. The building is nowhere near as good as Minecraft's though, nor does it have any logic (redstone) to work with. Both are amazing games and I recommend both equally.

They're different. Minecraft is more about building. In Terraria, once you have the best gear and beat all the bosses you most likely never play it again.

there is some strength in pc gaming this year, seems alot of people are sick of the console bs.

come on seriously.....someone just has to say something which will stir up a totally irrelevant debate.

kevnb2278d ago

well hey, 200,000 sales on word of mouth alone. console owners always have to point out how pc games dont sell...

This actually gives us a very good estimate of how fast games sell on steam. Its actually outselling witcher 2, which judging by these numbers shouldn't be much far behind. I see both of them selling around 500K in a month on steam

witcher 2 has an attractive retail package, the gog.com drm free version, and direct2drive had some pre-order sales. Witcher 2 is selling about as good as any rpg without massive amounts of advertsing could sell. I see witcher 2 sales snowballing as well, word of mouth and a few patches and almost every self respecting pc gamer will grab a copy.

well said.

i got mine from the shops so we will have to see total sales at end of the month.
