Online Gaming Friends: Are They Your True Friends?

In this new age of social networking, especially being integrated in every piece of technology around us, the word “friend(s)” is thrown around a bit. The recent explosion of online gaming has welcomed this massive trend complete with “friend lists.” But how many actual friends are on your friend’s list? GxC's Crapgamer gives his thoughts on the subject. (Culture, PC, PS3, Tag Invalid, XBLI, Xbox 360)

Um... not really because we don't actually hang out in real life. I do chat with them on facebook and i do talk to some on the phone.

I have had some form of online friends since 1983, and in those 28 years, many of them have been near and dear to me. I think digitally, just as in so-called real life, there will be people that you meet that you befriend, and there will be people you meet and in 5 years will not remember.

I only play with my close friends and family.

What are you getting at? Are you trying to tell me that DoingYourMommyDoggyStyle55 isn't a true friends? Well if that's your game then get lost because he's helped me kill off countless ISA scumbags.

To be honest though I think all but maybe 3 people on my friends list are people I haven't actually met IRL, the rest are all friends I've known for many years. Back when I played Kz2 a lot I had a pretty good amount of people on there I had met through the game but I've deleted them all since I no longer have Kz2.

NO, nothing can come between the people you meet in person.

NoobJobz  +   1164d ago
I know the majority of the people on my list in real life. As a matter of fact, I deleted most of my friends list unless I actually knew them.

About half of my friends on my PSN account are people I know in real life and hang out with.

About four friends on my XBL account.

I might be a weirdo or a loser but I met a friend online that was the same age as me we were 18 when we started playing rainbow six. He lives in vegas over the years became good friends with his real life friends added on Facebook and everything played cod 4 together Mw2 and so on . This year January when I turned 21 and went to vegas for my birthday with my girlfriend and some friends we met up with my xbox friends and went out for the night was really fun ,

I was thinking about it for a while on how I would reply... I really dont see your point.

Can I lie about who I am in person? People always seem to have these "Dark" secrets whch come out, or hide other things. Is seeing "Duke_Fan281" and knowing that they're 6'1, fat, male and exist any different than being told they're 5'1, buff and female? It's not like anyone is judging anyone else off what they see when it comes to "friends". I "know" more about people online than I know about people in person.
Does lying change anything online? No matter who/what you claim to be it's not like others can't do the same in person. I could tell my friends I work at X place doing Y and outside of going there to verify how could they prove/disprove it?
I think the issue is tiering. A lot of people add me and others simply for the fact they can do X, have a mic, dont sound like a kid, etc. It's not like no one ever made friends with a cool kid for status, dated the hot girls ugly friend to get with her, made friends with a car owner, and so many other things.

So yeah would have been nice if you expanded on your points...

I'd say so.

That's not to say that just because someone is on your "friends" list they are your friend, but through playing and talking over months or even years, you can develop some pretty tight relationships.

I've made countless friends online over the past few years.

On my entire PSN list, their are only 3 people I met through PSN, that I am now true friends with. The rest are either randoms or family. After a couple games of Black Ops with them, I said, "Hey, where you guys from?" Turns out, they lived only 15 minutes away and they had gone to my high school. o_O Small world. But now we hang out all the time in real life, as well as pwnin some n00bs in the PSN world.

Dont have any friends online that I'm not friends with in real life. IDK but I just think it's a little creepy being friends with a guy you don't know. Just my opinion though....
Sekundes  +   1164d ago
If you never met them in real life, then no.The world is full of weirdos who might pretend to be your friend then when they get you alone-Bang!-The cops pull a dead body from a ditch.

That is a stupid topic, of course you can have friends over the internet. Hell, some people have even found their spouse over the internet.
