Gameplay Today explains why the current generation of hardware has made this the greatest generation in gaming history, which pushes the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo era to second.
I don't think any era can surpass Sega and Nintendo. Anyone remember: "Genesis does what Nintendon't" That campaign was the best! Kind of the Kevin Butler of the time.
Sega Genesis had "blast processing" lol. Remember that?
blast processing was a funny marketing phrase. There was no such thing.
I agree with this title. With full online, HD, hard drives, multiple distribution methods, voice chat, dozens of quality games and more... this is clearly the best generation so far. I'm expecting even better things next gen.
was by far my favorite. Its easy for younger people to proclaim what generation they really got into as the "best". Many will say they got into it at the PS1/N64 era or even the PS2 era. Myself started on the pong/2600 days. When 8bit came out, it was ok but it was the 16bit that changed things forever. Creating the hardware/software rivalries that has come to be called "console wars". That is where it all started with the loyal fans taking sides. In the end it was the gamers that won because we saw creative talent and artistic vision shine above the limitations of the console specs themselves. No doubt that looking back has been the inspiration of today and future gaming.
16bit the birth of the fanboy
I actually disagree. (weird, huh.) I actually enjoyed the simplicity of the ps2/gc/xbox gen. Less hassale. As awesome as DLC is, some prices are outrageous. Don't even get me started on all those annoying updates. You'd think integrating online would make gaming more fun(it does), yet it carries all this unnecessary baggage along the way. When I pop in my brand new game, I don't wanna wait 30+ minutes waitin for my console to "integrate" Bull. Hmph. Not even gonna reflect on Sony's mess this past 4 months. @manimal: a bit extreme, but well said. "Louis_Guzman>>&am p;gt ;Lol, best gen of all time? Sure, if you dig unprecedented hardware failures, hacked networks, paying $60 for games then paying more for dlc that used to be free in gens past. Not to mention an absolute torrent of bland, earth toned, derivative fps pap, then sure this gen is teh greatest! Wake up kid, this isn't a golden age. Hell, it's not even the Byzantine empire. " Yup. Couldn't have said it any better myself.
SNES VS GENESIS was the best
People that argue old consoles were better are simply caught in nostalgia. Even a decent 2011 games is better than the best of the SNES games.
Says the 12 y/o who's first system was a Wii probably.
So the commenter is a kid because their opinion differs from your own? Grow up.
lol SNES games are godly, Chrono Trigger, SMW, Zelda : Lttp, Super Metroid, Secret of mana, FFVI, earthbound etc for me the SNES and Megadrive era will always the best although I loved the beginings of the PS and N64 era also
Couldn't have said it better, gillri. Nes, Megadrive/Genesis, Snes, Turbo Duo, Neo Geo, all the way to PS1, that was a Golden era, when much of gamings framework was created.
"Even a decent 2011 game[s] is better than the best of the SNES games." omg this really is a stupid statement well maybe you just haven't played the brilliant snes games...
I have been playing games since 1989, so in MY opinion games are better then ever. Those that claim PS1, or SNES had better games or whatever are caught in nostalgia as SHYGUY said. There are some great games, no question about that, but come one comparing classic games with movies LOL
It's not nostalgia. Those games where more challenging and actualy played better. This era is the era of hype so many franchises died this gen. Ff13, castlevania. One of this gens best game is a game from the Nes snes era Mario 5! Mario kart is Only selling because it is more like the first one. Most of the new ips of this gen will not hold up well game play wise and graphics wise. The problem with this gen was console gamers became pc gamers over night. It is much like movies these days the next gen is going to fix that. This gen is the only gen people are not excited to get new hardware yet they keep complaining about multiplatform games.
LOL! Just because you're young doesn't mean you have to bash the older guys for claiming SNES games were better. Whats a decent 2011 game for you? How can a "decent" game be better than the best of SNES?? So a game like Bulletstorm is better than a FF6, Terranigma, Castlevania, Super Mario Brothers? You're young, you can't appreciate the classics, go back to playing CoD games
You have been gaming all that long, have you? Gaming isn't just about graphics, sound, online, complexity, and so on. Gaming for most old school gamers, and even younger gamers I know, is entertainment / fun / escapism. Some of my favorite moments growing up in gaming were some of the most simplistic games ever made. Break out, Warlords, Asteroids, Bezerk, Zaxxon, Centipede, Donkey Kong and so on. Most of the games years before NES or SNES existed. I guess I just showed my age.
Overall, I think there are a lot of things that make this gen a strong contender for best. But it's certainly not the strength of the games alone. It's not like today's games are bad. No. It's pretty much the same field of quality and crap games you get with any gen. Ironically, it's been the titles that try to revive the gaming greats of past which have been some of the crappiest titles of all. If anything sets this gen apart, it's interconnectivity and richness of features.
The thing that separates the SNES/Genesis generation and the current one is that the older games have a lasting appeal. Go back and play Tomb Raider for PS and you'll just want to vomit after twenty minutes. Same thing will happen to this generation of games.
Your point of view will probably be formed by your life and age at the time. For me, the Golden era was of the Playstation 1, N64 and then Dreamcast between about 1997 and 2000. Goldeneye, Metal gear solid, Shenmue etc. I was at the perfect age then to just drink in the games at the time, and had my best friends around me to enjoy them with, the happiest years of my life so far and so on. This makes me look back at that era most fondly, despite having previous generations of consoles and every major one since. This generation clearly has a wider appeal, i feel it has never been able to match those times in my mind. The excitement and exploration that went with games moving into another dimension and many adding amazing quality music, voices and video. I find it difficult to pinpoint too much this generation that matches the speed of advancement in the industry at that period. A time before shooters ruled the earth? Glorious. I am sure that your view of generations is very different from mine, but i bet it is still mostly dictated by special moments of your life coinciding with those games and machines.
your argument is rendered invalid, simply because the games that cause the biggest buzz are usually remakes or continuations of SNES and Genesis games. Are you can't really believe Sonic 2006 is better than Sonic 2, or Golden Axe Beast Rider is better than Golden Axe 2, and I hope to God (or whoever you believe in) that you don't dare think Castlevania Lord of shadows even holds a torch to the old Castlevanias
"Even a decent 2011 games is better than the best of the SNES games." worst statement i've ever read. and i didnt even own a SNES.
SNES & Genesis dude
This isnt even better than last gen. The ps2 had games to put pretty much everything we have now on consoles to shame. This is the best portable gen ever. The ds and psp have kicked ass.
So far for My ps3 & pc is only getting better! 360 not so much will see at E3 though..
Each to their own, I personally enjoyed (and am still enjoying) this gen the most. I've never bought as many games in a generation as I have in the current one. I still have very fond memories of previous generations i.e. the PS1, the SNES, the Gamecube etc, but for me, the consoles with the best games have been this gen.
I think the last gen had a better choice of games, I find this gen that I ended up buying most of my games because there was nothing else to buy. E.G I bought Homefront because I was itching for a new game to play but kind of knew it would not be a great game.
It's the Greatest Generation of Gaming Right Now..... for publishers. release unfinished games and sell for max price DLC ( disc locked content) over priced and exploiting gamers.
Lol, best gen of all time? Sure, if you dig unprecedented hardware failures, hacked networks, paying $60 for games then paying more for dlc that used to be free in gens past. Not to mention an absolute torrent of bland, earth toned, derivative fps pap, then sure this gen is teh greatest! Wake up kid, this isn't a golden age. Hell, it's not even the Byzantine empire.
Nothing nor any gen will ever beat the genesis, nintendo 64, ps1, snes days...:) you guys talking about it makes me miss it alot :(.... gawddddd some good ol days I remember, waking up that saturday morning after school getting up to play with my brother on the snes some super mario or getting on the genesis for some classic sonic or getting on the ps1 for some twisted metal 1,2,3,4 action ahhhhh why isn't this gen fun as the last one??? I used to play last gen for hours!!, I get bored of todays games so fast.
To me it was PS1/N64 gen. And PC is one whole never ending gen i guess so that too.
This definitely is the best generation, online gaming has a huge part in it being the best. But if you look at the games these days, theres a good game coming out every month. And a dozen candidates for GOTY every year. The same can't be said about the old days, you pick a dozen in the whole generation of genesis or nintendo. Moreover, games are much more personal, have better stories, but again there is nothing like online gaming. This is mind, we must understand the part the old generations played in getting here.
sorry ps2/original xbox era was the best this one sucks in comparison
A great as this gen is for me, it doesn't topple my 1st place: 32-bit era (PS1/N64/Saturn).
It terms of scale this is the greatest generation so far. Gaming is being made to all kind of *gags* 'demongraphics', with gaming no one longer being seen as something nerdy, basement dwelling virgins do with their time, or being made for kids. Everyone seems to be involved now. What I hate most about these 'greatest generation' debates is people who look down on others for maybe not being part of their favoured generation. I was never 'into' gaming during the Nintendo and Sega era, although I would dabble with my brothers Megadrive. Gaming for me kicked off with the N64 and Playstation and the jump to 3D. Thats my opinion and if you think the generation before or after that was better then thats your opinion and I could see why. But in the past I've had people shake their heads dissapointingly at me for never owning a bloody SNES.
I don't look down on anyone, when someone tells me they haven't played, i either load up the VC, or dig my old consoles out the closet and we go at it. It usually ends with them saying "I missed out" or something to that effect, but i did have one friend who bitched about graphics and called everything lame though. ironically he thinks COD is the best game EVER!!!!!
I've enjoyed this generation very much. I can finally use my gaming console to watch netflix, rent and buy movies, buy full games. I don't remeber being able to play with 24 players at one time on a huge battlefield and have over 30 friends that I have never met with my super nintendo
True but you can play DKC with it :)
This is good gen but not the greatest for me theres still not enough decent JRpgs for my liking. PS1/N64 is my favourite but I'm very bias with nostalgia.
I Have to disagree. Without the variety and storytelling of the last three generations in gaming. Anyone thinking that playing online and chatting is the pinnacle is sadly lost or started gaming this gen.
I'm not sure that this is necessarily the "best" generation of gaming (as the PC gaming explosion of the mid-to-late nineties probably deserves the title), but it's certainly the most inclusive. This gen has turned gaming from a niche "nerdy" pastime into a normal part of daily life for all ages. There's also no doubt that, in terms of raw quality, we've never had it so good.
only a gameboy. Gameboy and gamegear used to make me crap my pants when I was young LOL. Playing Mortal kombat 2 on GG in 3rd grade was amazing back in those days. but my favorite might be the gen after that. I had a N64 and a PS1, and then I got a DC. N64 and PS1 had alot of amazing and new games back then. DC was in 99 and was pretty crazy for its time. I played alot of my favorite PS1 games on DC like TH2 and Soul reaver and I consider it mostly in the PS1/N64 because thats when I played it. Also some of my favorite games ever came out back then on PC, Dark forces 2: Jedi Knight, Half-life and Deus Ex, starcraft, diablo 2, mech warrior 3, UT, CS, Red alert 2 even DUKE NUKEM 3D. This gen is cool with things like Downloading games and more uses then previous times, but I think 1995 till the end of 2000 was the best gaming time for me. PS1, N64, DC, PC, and Even GB/GG in 1995 when I was 9.
I doubt it. It's way to many fps. I like ps2 gen better than this one. The ps2/n64 was good too. And even though it was before my time I do like the snes/mega drive. I don't like this gen because there is not enough "good" jrpg's, too many fps, dlc, and focus on online.
looooooooooool Best gen hah?? NEW GAMER baah. Mybe the hardware awesome. But games are not(except 20 to 50 games from the 2005 to 2012).
I do think this gen has lots of great games, but i think the problem is that it is too saturated -> lack of distinctions. Back then, games seem better/more exciting because they are still fresh, new concept being built, etc....people like it because they haven't not seen it before (like if you live in San Francisco, you hated the golden gate bridge, but tourist loved it). There were a lot of distinctions between consoles and it makes them feel unique. Now adays, even exclusives from different consoles look the same, play the same, and most seem to just go for multiplatform games anyways, with the exception of console defying exclusives like GT, Halo, Mario etc...This gen are mostly improvement from last gens concepts and not so much ground breaking ideas (improvement on graphics isn't consider ground breaking). The excitement of seeing something strage has diminish -> less interesting.
BS!!, just the opposite, THIS IS THE WORST WORST GENERATION OF GAMING!!!! If your a Hardcore gamer, and I mainly only care about AAA Games with deep engrossing story's, so that excludes the BS FPS's like: COD and BF:BD, BRINK,L4D,PORTAL,etc i'm not talking about Online BS shooters, Yes the INDUSTRY loves these types of games. but i hate them and dont play them, and never will play them. This Gen is BS, Last Gen was better, this gen has been about "Streamlining the Experiences"(watering down the game to make more $$$$$$$$$ for the Industry) and Casualitist.
If SNES games are so bad compared to today, then why did people get so excited when Chrono Cross was announced for Virtual Console? Look at the facts. SNES and Genesis were the best.
Every generation of gaming has been just peachy since the 8bit days. Why does one have to be the best and another the worst? They all have had moments of brilliance that we will forever look back upon with great fondness, and that is all that matters. I think a lot of people who don't particularly like this generation of games are just kind of jaded to the medium. Don't forget that this gen isn't simply composed of retail console games. We also have XBLA and PSN titles, DS and PSP, and mobile gaming has made some serious strides.
