Do games really need escort quests?

Escort quests, something that has become insanely popular in games for the last two generations of consoles. Goozernation has put together a list of games with escort quests, include, ICO, Dead Rising, Resident Evil 4, and Enslaved, The problem here is there is no standard for games, most of the time the NPC is a useless burden and makes the game almost unplayable. Should developers due away with the escort missions? Should there be some sort of standard? (Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, ICO, Industry, PS2, PS3, Resident Evil 4, The Last Guardian, Xbox 360)

No. I hate them. Especially when they're on time as well.

THANK YOU!

Escort missions are almost universally TERRIBLE. The AI needed to make these NPCs "smart" hasn't kept up with the rest of the tech.

I am a huge proponent of doing away with escort missions until they can stop NPCs from running face first into shotguns.

I 2nd that!! I hate them more than anything.

I agree nothing like having to guard something that's helpless when a timer is running down and they wander off

Fallout 3, and oblivion have the worst escort missions, horrible pathfinding AI and they always start fighting anything near them & die.

These are the bane of my existence

Nope, i hate them! Just like check-point races..

Yeah, this one's a no brainer. There might not be anything in games worse than an escort mission. Except maybe underwater levels....
Baka-akaB  +   1414d ago
They are the worst ... the folks too escort are either too slow or running at danger pointlessly .

It's the worst gameplay mechanic that just wouldnt die along with underwater levels .

GOD NO.

I hated ICO, there, I SAID IT.

hate them if they were boring and unnecessary!

but if escort quests have meaning behind them and consist emotional development between the characters like ICO why not...again its just my opinion

Should be like GOW3 one, they can't die.
PickAShoe  +   1414d ago
if the AI is smart, it might be fun.
Kakasquall  +   1414d ago
Honestly, the escort missions are sorta lame imo.

Now if they could protect themselves, it might be fun.
s45gr32  +   1414d ago
To me is annoying as hell to play an escort mission due to the weakling person you need to escort dies easily or wanders off too many times.
ExitToExisT  +   1414d ago
i dont have any problem as long as it takes the fun of it like dead rising..

The only game that should have escort missions are the Saint's Row series, because doing the Escort Missions on that game is driving around an escort while she does business in the back of the taxi, with hilarious audio.

Also, plane games, especially WW2 era of games. Nobody sent out a fleet of bombers without an escort, at least, nobody smart.

Other than that, no escort missions should really be in games. Dead rising 1 had some brutal escort missions.
puffkix  +   1414d ago
The short answer is no, we don't need them in games. I remember when ICO came out and there was some staunch defense for the escort aspect of that game. Don't get me wrong, I really liked ICO but could have done without the whole "helpless princess" thing.

Ever since Natalya in Goldeneye, there has been a special place in hell reserved for escort missions. This is coming from an avid Metal Gear fan, and Kojima loves his escort missions, but they are the bane of a gamer's existence. Its not a good feature of the game when the most satisfaction is derived from killing your companion. If GoldenEye had super realistic damage effects, Natalya's head would look like Hitler's at the end of Inglourious Basterds.

For reference. If you haven't seen the movie, spoilers?
