HD format war intensifies with announcements and rumors

The Internet this week has been buzzing with chatter about the dueling Blu-ray/HD DVD formats. While there are journalists who predict the success of one format over another, there is growing consensus that this "war" will be longer and more vicious than anyone had previously predicted. A SciFi.com article has collected thoughts on the format war from CNET, Gizmodo, CrunchGear, PC Magazine, Coolest Gadgets, and Forbes.

Highlights of the collected thoughts are:
* The war isn't what matters: it's getting people to abandon the DVD in the first place (Yankee Group Research via CNet News)
* On Toshiba's sub-$1000 laptop with HD-DVD/DVD-RW drive: Meh. Could help? (Gizmodo)
* HD-DVD's new "U-Shop" gives that format an edge (CrunchGear)
* Dual-format players are not the solution (PC Magazine)
* A third competitor? Don't forget the HD-VMD (Coolest Gadgets)
* A fourth competitor? Downloads (Forbes.com)

OK seriously who is buying HD-DVD

Lucreto3680d ago

I'm in Ireland and a saw my first HD-DVD about two weeks ago. I havn't seen a player but I saw plenty of blu-ray and players.

We can't even rent HD-DVD's as Xtravision (our local rental shops) is owned by Blockbuster.

sticky doja3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

Have you seen transformers? You should really see it in high def. I have transformers, knocked up, 300, the fountain and fear and loathing in las vegas on hd-dvd and they all kick much ass.

EDIT: I also only have a blockbuster in my home town but they dont even rent bluray movies here, but my town has only about 20,000 people in it. I do how ever rent HD DVD's from blockbuster online, then just take them back to the store and rent regualr DVD's that aren't on HD DVD.

Snukadaman3680d ago

But that deal they got at best buy is tempting...you get heroes hd and 5 free movies for 179.00...I just might jump in nov.

Baron793680d ago

I love HD-DVD for being a Movie Format and a Movie Format only. And it Honestly HD-DVD has the best Exclusives right now (Transormers,Batman Begins, The Matrix.) And the best studio support,The Big 3 (Universal,Paramount and Warner Bros.) Blue-Ray could keep Fox and Disney for now ,they'll coming over to the Red side soon.Blue Ray should just be for my PS3's games but unfortunely there are none.I've had my PS3 for a week now and have 0 PS3 games,(Uncharted will be my first), I just can't stop watching Transformers on HD-DVD! It is amazing!

son of a... wrong reply

cuco333680d ago

I love HDM, especially HD DVD and all it offers. Can't wait to get the other movies when I go BD as well.

Embrace both and don't be a brand bot. Be a movie fanboy, not a brand fanboy

hahahabutt3680d ago

I'm buying HD-DVD movies and have been, I love how you can see the menu's while you watch a movie.

gogators3680d ago

I have it, and I'll say it's easy to set-up; but it looks just soo ugly. Thank god you interface with the abox and the HD-DVD player, thus the player can be buried out of sight. Also, it needs it's own power source which I didn't care for either. I should have just gotten a stand alone player to go along with my PS3.

Jeremy Gerard3680d ago

TONS of people are buying HDDVD stop listening to that sony propaganda.
I own Matrix and Transformers on HDDVD and they look and sound orgazmic!

Go to the AV forums and see all the folks who prefer HD over bluray because of all the features and picture quality it has over Bluray, HDDVD is FAR from dead, that is just what Sony keeps telling you, have you ever even seen an HDDVD movie?

Omegasyde3680d ago

Blue ray = HD DVD: picture quality
Blu Ray > Audio: Because of more space supposingly
Blu-ray = HD DVD: Menu's and extras. They are equal now unlike before.
Blu-ray > HD DVD: More movie studios. Paramount might go HD DVD, but
------------------ Steven Spielburgs movies are Blu-ray.
Blu-ray > HD DVD: More space per layer, With HD DVD topping at 51 for a disc, Panasonic already has a 4th layered bluray at a 100gb.

Transformers is good for HD DVD, but there was 2 bigger summer time movies that are both Blu-ray exclusive..
Spider Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
So far Blu-ray has it all still Except paramount for 1 more year. In all reality, Why not go with the Content that has the most space? It makes no sense. I am not talking about VDVD, since that one came late to the ball game.
I am not a Sony droid, but HD DVD makes no sense to even be at this stage, since it is a inferior product. I love Toshiba but once Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony feel the need to finally drop prices for blu-ray players.. It's over. You have to think once the ps3 goes to 399.00 other blu-ray players will have to follow in price to be competive.

IRISHCALIBER3679d ago

Why wouldn't I invest in the better format?
Perks of HD-DVD:
1. Best movies available
2. Dual format (use this all the time)
3. Best interactive features
4. Already released most of my favorite classics on HD-DVD
5. HD-DVD add on (runs independent from my games drive)
6. 8 free great movies to start off with
7. Neutral colored packaging doesn't spell doomed
8. Doesn't use propaganda to sell it's products
9. pristine picture quality (VC-1 compression)
10. Mandatory HD sound (uncompressed is a waste of money imo)
11. Many more appreciated mandatory requirements set it aside from Blu
12. Special features on all films not just bare boned like most Blu
13. Has a more diverse adult market rather than Sony fans only
14. Web enabled features(share favorite scene montages with other fans)
15. Every player is fully upgradeable via the internet(all features)
16. Loads quicker and has a clearer picture than most Blu available
17. everyone I know into HD has one and loves it
18. Survives despite the plethora of money Sony spends to assassinate
19. Is only getting Bigger and Better for everyone, consumer friendly
20. LESS EXPENSIVE, BEARS THE "DVD" NAME, DUAL Plays in all DVD PLAYERS, HAS THE BEST TITLES ON THE HORIZON OR OTHERWISE AND LETS SAY IT AGAIN IS THE BEST VALUE FOR ANYBODIES DOLLAR!!!

ASK YOURSELF IF I DIDN'T HAVE A PS3 WHAT WOULD I BE WATCHING MY HD MOVIES ON? answer. ***HD-DVD***

I Love NY, and HD-DVD!! lol

AuburnTiger3679d ago

If we're going to start talking about "intelligence" then perhaps we should start with spelling.

Lucreto3679d ago

1. Best movies available
My favourites are all on blu-ray

2. Dual format (use this all the time)
It costs more and no point in having both.

3. Best interactive features
I don't watch them on DVD

4. Already released most of my favorite classics on HD-DVD
Lucky you I have life of Brian in December

5. HD-DVD add on (runs independent from my games drive)
Most people I know sold their as they can't rent them.

6. 8 free great movies to start off with
Sony have a similear offer.

7. Neutral colored packaging doesn't spell doomed
Red neutral? Seems like a danger colour to me.

8. Doesn't use propaganda to sell it's products
I haven't seen an advertisment for HD-DVD yet.

9. pristine picture quality (VC-1 compression)
No difference from Blu-ray

10. Mandatory HD sound (uncompressed is a waste of money imo)
People want HD picture and sound no one or the other.

11. Many more appreciated mandatory requirements set it aside from Blu
End ot the month

12. Special features on all films not just bare boned like most Blu
This is about to change at the end of the month

13. Has a more diverse adult market rather than Sony fans only
Might be true but sales say otherwise with the last few months with more Blu-Ray hardware selling.

14. Web enabled features(share favorite scene montages with other fans)
You can do that on the internet

15. Every player is fully upgradeable via the internet(all features)
Sony will have firmware updates soon

16. Loads quicker and has a clearer picture than most Blu available
Blu-ray takes less than a mimute to load HD-DVD takes two.

17. everyone I know into HD has one and loves it
People I know think blu-ray is HD-DVD. They got confused when I told them HD-DVD is an expanded format of DVD.

18. Survives despite the plethora of money Sony spends to assassinate
If they keep lowering the price

19. Is only getting Bigger and Better for everyone, consumer friendly
Its got another 18 months to try

20. LESS EXPENSIVE, BEARS THE "DVD" NAME, DUAL Plays in all DVD PLAYERS, HAS THE BEST TITLES ON THE HORIZON OR OTHERWISE AND LETS SAY IT AGAIN IS THE BEST VALUE FOR ANYBODIES DOLLAR!!!
Holding the DVD name is all its got in Europe.

Bloodmask3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

I think that part of the article pretty much sums it up. For either format to win they have to start outselling regular DVD-9s. And with 2 formats competing for the 51% of "total" DVD market share it could take years. Such was the case with the DVD vs VHS war years ago.

Right now HD media makes up less than 10% of the total DVD market. Which ever player reaches the price bw $100 to $200 will most likely be the one that prevails.

DJ3680d ago

"I'm too hurt to admit that HD-DVD is dying, so I'm going to change subjects and claim that HD Movie sales are nothing compared to DVD sales."

Snukadaman3680d ago

Cannibalizing each other when it comes too sales between blu-ray and hd-dvd are killing both formats....it just weakens both when you compare them too regular dvd. compare sales of 300 too both hd formats and you see that in the first week alone, 7 million copies were sold by dvd alone.

Baron793680d ago

How could you possibly make such a comment, you sound like sony "This war is over,BDA has won!" "HD-DVD will be dead in months!" Just face it, HD-DVD is not going anywhere but up while sony keeps tripping over it's own feet. Blue-Ray is a great format for games, HD-DVD is the format for movie lovers, and It's here to stay.

kydrice3680d ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

In before "because wikipedia is always right right?"

Doesn't matter if Dreamworks and Paramount went HD-DVD(Even though they went because HD-DVD bought them for 18 months for 150million)The consumer buys more Blu-Ray than HD-DVD. Oh and you might have Universal but none of Spielberg's movies since they're exempt from Universal's HD-DVD deal. Might not be a big deal to you but to the many others it is. Lastly HD-DVD came out first, yet is trailing Blu by a large margin. Sony tripping over their own feet? Hmm.. me thinks not.

Baron793680d ago

Yes, I would call having to drop the price of your main video games system $200 in the first year and then packaging your "Video Game System" with a movie and losing Paramount to HD-DVD ,losing exclusives Like DMC4 and Assassin's Creed to the 360 is for sure tripping over your own feet. Take off your Blu Shades man!

kydrice3680d ago

Tripping over their own feet in the console wars? yes tripping over their own feet in the format wars? no. Why are you pulling video games into this? what does DMC4 and all that have to do with this? Paramount? They were BOUGHT OUT by the HD-DVD team, how many times must someone tell you people this. I'll take off my shades when YOU OPEN YOUR EYES. It might be Blu in my world but I can still see whereas you're just tripping over your own feet in the dark. Oh and you're very very typical you know that? First you(and others) complain about the expensive price of the PS3 and now you're complaining or at least making it seem like it's a bad thing that the PS3 is now affordable to you sewer rats. You seem like a very frightened and confused person. Stick to one story will ya?

Bathyj3680d ago

This is why HDDVD needs to just go away. BR is obviously going to win. One day. And the longer it takes the worst for everyone. Most people aren't committing yet till one format dies. As long as there are 2 HD formats, neither will challege DVD for outright market share. That doesn't mean they cant be successful but they wont be the standard format. PS3 guarantees BR is not going anywhere. HDDVD WILL lose eventually. They should just do it now for the good of everyone. Maybe Sony should sell a stake in BR to toshiba to get them to drop HDDVD. Afterall it will grow the market. Owning 100% of BR when its only 10% of the overall market isnt as good as owning 50% of BR when its 90% of the overall market. And studios jumping ship for the short term benefit need to realise they're hurting themselves long term by prolonging this war. HDDVD will never see one cent of my money. Sure I'm only one guy but I have about 30 or more BR's already. 5 ore them could have been Univeral movies if they'd played ball.

Baron793680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

The only one or thing frightened and confused is sony.
Why did I bring up games? Well because it is a Video Game Machine , right? Oh no wait it's a Blu-ray player, no no now they are foucusing on games but are packaging Spider-Man 3 with it.I don't know WTF is going on with it. What I do know is I just purchesed a 20gb PS3. I love each and every one of my PS2 games and want them to work on my PS3 which I knew I would eventully have to get for some exclusive games , I hope. It is sony's fault for mixing games and movies, and that is why I chose HD-DVD, It is only for one thing Movies. Have you seen 300's special features? Or Batman's? Or heard and seen Kong or Transformers? Absolutly amazing. And BTW Jaws is my favorite movie ever made. And Spielberg will come around too when he see's how the majority of Blue Ray/PS3 movie buyers don't care about Close Encounters which will sadly be my first Blue Ray purchase, maybe.Peace!

kydrice3680d ago

Why would Spielberg all of a sudden go to HD-DVD when Blu-Ray is the obvious leader in disc sales? You make no sense whatsoever. You think people buy the PS3 and "Eh well it plays Blu-Ray but I'll never watch a Blu-Ray movie" You gotta be F'ing kidding me son. I sincerely do not know what fantasy world you're living in, some world where HD-DVD is all of a sudden the dominant format but boy it sounds like a horrible place. A place of no logic and aids. No matter how you want to spin it PS3 plays Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray discs are outselling HD-DVD and in terms of PS3 vs HD-DVD standalone players? PS3 wins by a mountain slide. Even more so now since they lowered the price but oooo noooo it's such a bad thing because Sony is stupid stupid stupid. They made a videogame/blu-rayer that I can afford!! o nooo!!!

Baron793680d ago

1.Blu Ray sucks for movies and will eventually lose.

2.If you really like movies you should have an HD-DVD player. You are missing out.

HarryEtTubMan3680d ago

LOL wait... whicht has the high definition sound in 7.1 again? O yea Blu ray. WHat about the amount of space on each disk for... let's say extra content/behind the scenes? BLURAY. Which have all Big companys supported and companys like Panasonic ahve already said they'll win? Bluray. Who owns Tri Star, Columbia, MGM and Sony pictures? Sony is a very rich VERY powerful company in the entertainment industry... pretty much number one. The next format will be Bluray..... like it or not. I'm adding on the Bluray list by getting a 80gb PS3... sorry man you're gonna lose.

OMG

how could this 'war' get more intense than it already is??!?!

I mean, its non-stop action!

kydrice3680d ago

The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray userbase should all amass into huge armies out among a Scottish glen and run at each other and beat each other on the head with our respective HD players. I'm just waiting for the axe attachement announcement from Sony.

Covenant3680d ago

LOL! That was a good one.

Now, if we could also have all the fanboys join in and beat each other to death with their consoles...

jaja14343680d ago

So in instead of yelling "FREEDOM" would they shout "HIGH DEFINITION DISC PLAYER THAT INCLUDES HIGH DEFINITION SOUND?"

I only ask because that just seems to wordy for an epic battle on the rolling hills. Ohh also would they be wearing their respective blue/red colors?

Jdash243680d ago

lmao.......the ps3 would be the ultimate tool of destruction.......it would crack many fanboy's skulls, however the wii wouldnt do anything, it would probably break easily.........however i can see wii fanboy's strangling ppl with the cord between the wiimote and nun chuck

and the 360 fanboy's would swing the power brick around like a mace :P

gogators3680d ago

one might be able to keep the mighty PS3 melee weapon at bay. At least until one tires. Imagine all those 360 fans chucking their attachments like pescky little bullets as the PS3 fan wields his mighty two-handed PS3 as he charges for the kill.

andy0013679d ago

They would all fall off, or break on the first attack, the 'Rusty Ratchet of Doom' would cause a massive failure in the Xbox Hive Mind and they would all run away screaming 'memory dump, memory dump, memory dump!'

bootsielon3680d ago

A redesigned, small 20GB PS3 that costs 199. By then Paramount and Universal will be about to finishing their contracts with Toshiba. After that, Blu-ray wins.

Ri0tSquad3680d ago

if that that happened then the war is over! but in 2 years of the ps3's life span? Na I don't think it would happen.

KINGDRAMA3680d ago

people dont know the pros of upgrading...........sound/visu al quality/ interactivity.

if they push this as an advertisemenet and hold comparisons of a dvd home theater versus a bluray hometheater they would make a strong impact on the non-knowledgeable consumers. Of course PRICE is a deciding factor as well FOR MOST PEOPLE. Frankly some people just dont give a rats ass about either format.........the professional types do work all day u know.
