As Sony battles on for supremacy in the next generation DVD format war, it continues to release new Blu-ray hardware at competitive pricing. Case in point, the new BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player which was released last month for just under $500. Before that player was released, the PS3 was the least expensive Blu-ray Disc player available.
Over time, with frequent firmware updates, the PS3 has become an even more impressive piece of hardware, with wireless networking capabilities, distributed media playback and standard DVD upconversion to 1080p output. And now with the price drop, it's back to being the lowest cost Blu-ray Disc player on the market. The fact that it also happens to be an advanced next generation gaming console is almost superfluous.
