Earlier this year Activision promised to bring us a “leaner” company, more focused on existing franchises and DLC. Part of that promise was the creation of Beachhead studios to incorporate an online social network style community concept that is tied to the game. This new content differs from the planned China released COD MMO hinted at in the 2011 prospectus. China is a unique situation and the microtransaction based MMO is a way to gain more of the market share in a country where piracy is a major issue. The Beachhead platform does not have a cost associated with it and Activisions Bobby Kotick assures the COD community that these online based enhancements will be “free-of-charge”.
