The Balcony is Closed: Whatever Happened to the Licensed Game?

Warp Zoned examines what happened to the licensed game. They write:

"In case there was any doubt, Thor and his mighty hammer have officially opened the 2011 Summer movie season today. What will follow is four months of blockbusters that will be heavy on action and even heavier on reviews comparing their visuals to video games. But as Hollywood and Redmond trade ideas back and forth, the once great institution that is the licensed game has gone by the wayside." (Dev, Industry, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Can someone tell me WHEN the licensed game was a "great institution?"

Ever since the Atari VCS edition of E.T., licensed games have generally been awful. Going through rubbish like Cobra, Home Alone and Red Heat on the 8-bit systems, all the way through the 16-bit Back To The Future and Simpsons games...and on through crap such as 007 Racing, Toy Story 2, pretty much every Disney game made for the PlayStation, Super Bombad Racing, Up!, Rio, Thor, the Transformers games...all rubbish. Occasionally, you'll get something like Super Empire Strikes Back, which is really good, but its VERY rare.

Any action film will probably have a game made out of it. Any kids film will probably have a game made out of it. The most either will generally score in Metacritic terms, is 60. Why? Because they're rushed. Designed to be in stores on the same day as the movie launches, so that little Bobby can get his mother to buy it for him the day after they've been to the cinema.

Game journalists know that licensed games are traditionally rubbish. They're the industry's main "inside" joke. Anyone who'd read more than four articles in their life knows this.

Licensed games have always sucked when released next to a movie--because everyone and their mom knows that licensed games are TERRIBLE. They're only a little bit better when released several months afterward.

I saw this then looked at the story below this to see a Cars 2 game.

That is all.
