Microsoft to focus on "smaller" acquisitions

Does CEO Ballmer's strategy point at the direction for Microsoft Game Studios?

Reuters reports that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said the company will be focusing on smaller acquisitions over the next few years in order to focus on the "independent path".

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco yesterday, Ballmer said that the company wants to focus on smaller purchases worth $50m to $1bn each ever year rather than pursuing 'mega-deals'.

"If at some point it makes sense, maybe then it makes sense. But that's not where we are going. We are driving in an independent direction," said Ballmer.

The story is too old to be commented.

This shouldn't be in industry since it's not MSGS.

At any rate, they are buying alot of companies out because smaller companies such as Google slipped through their fingers, now Google is the ultimate rival of Microsoft.

They don't want that to happen again it seems.

I wouldn't say Google is the ultimate rival to Microsoft. I think Yahoo and Google share a much larger rivalry than does MS. MS's biggest competition lies with companies that put out competing operating systems like a Linux or an Apple or SunMicrosystems since it doesn't use MS at all. These companies are the ones that threaten the core product of MS the most.

But you are right... MS wants to be on the entrepreneur front and catch these companies in their infancy and pull them in early and cheaply.

For now anyway.

My advice sell your stock. the most recent tech bubble is on the verge of collapse, and that coupled with the deflating real-estate market bodes for an economic collapse that makes 1976 look like Sony and Cher.

Google is $600+ a share! C'mon. What capital or real assets does it have. $600+ for a marketing tool!?

Does it really make sense that Google stock is worth more than the big three stocks combined and Coca-Cola and HP?
