VGW: Nintendo’s Pilotwings series’ importance lies in a sparse but system selling release history. It debuted on the SNES in 1990 to showcase the system’s Mode 7 graphics capability, and also accompanied the N64 launch in 1996. In both cases it was designed to demonstrate the new features in Nintendo’s hardware, and the same holds true for Pilotwings Resort, one of the 3DS launch titles. Does Nintendo’s new aviation adventure strike the perfect balance between tech demo and immersive game? The answer is largely a matter of perspective.
