Microsoft - What's the gameplan?

Looking at the recent buy-outs in the development community over recent times (EA/Bioware etc) and towards the intentions of Microsoft and it's partner development studios to see what's coming up next year and beyond.

"Microsoft are very intelligent. They've managed to elevate online gaming from nerdy LAN parties to the mainstream, and they knew you would be willing to pay $50 a year for it. They were able to ship several million defective units when the system launched, and somehow they knew you wouldn't care(to some extent). Microsoft knows what we want, plain and simple. They know our price point, they know our demographic, and in my opinion they will continue to deliver, and maybe (just maybe) these shake-ups are part of something bigger"

Funny in a delusional sort of way.

Microsoft is preparing for an exit from the console biz.

There are people with brand new 360s with the latest hardware fixes that are reporting their 360s getting RRoDs. The 360 hardware is obviously beyond salvageable if after two years of trying to fix the problem they haven't made any progress.

Six years on the market.
7 billion dollars in losses.
The 360 selling at a slower rate worldwide than the first Xbox.
HD-DVD has lost in the market to BluRay.

It was nothing but Xbox fan delusions that Microsoft would spend any amount of cash for any amount of time.

Peter Moore gets fired.
Microsoft sheds the entire first party/exclusive developers except Rare.
Cancels their own shows that normally would be used to give roadmaps for the next couple years releases.
Has anemic showings at GDC,E3,and TGS.

The only question remains as to what Microsoft is going to do with the existing Xbox division?

* Simply kill it off - take the embarrassing one time PR hit and be done with it
* Or try to transform the Xbox division into a Vista exclusive gaming focused entity where they drop making console hardware and instead pay pc developers to make exclusive games for their platform

Maybe Microsoft will continue putting out 360s and fixing them over and over again, but it is obvious they have made the decision to stop pouring billions into the Xbox mess.

The plug is being pulled, it is just a matter how long it will take.

I hope MS stays in the game at least through the next generation of systems. I know a lot of signs lately have been pointing in some weird directions for MS but as gamers we need the competition.

Muhahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa!.. That was so freaking funny man

Let's go step-by-step on where you're wrong.

"Microsoft is preparing for an exit from the console biz."

"There are people with brand new 360s with the latest hardware fixes that are reporting their 360s getting RRoDs. The 360 hardware is obviously beyond salvageable if after two years of trying to fix the problem they haven't made any progress."

Where are you seeing these "reports". Wouldn't that be major, front-page, headline news? Especially from the PS3 camp you would see that plastered all over the walls. The PS3 also has its share of hardware problems. Couple of my buddies have reported their PS3s eating their discs, disc trays locking up, etc. Give me a break. The PS3's hardware is hardly perfect.

"Six years on the market.
7 billion dollars in losses.
The 360 selling at a slower rate worldwide than the first Xbox.
HD-DVD has lost in the market to BluRay."

Where are you getting your numbers other than your ass. The 360 is the second best selling console out (close behind the Wii). The PS3 is eating the dust of every other competing console and peace of hardware. The 360 is selling, when there are not specials and big seasons, at consistently higher rates than the PS3.

HD-DVD has not lost to Blu-Ray and the Blu-Ray has won nothing. If this was true, why was Transformers ONLY released on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray. If HD-DVD was a lost cause, wouldn't you want to maximize profit?

"Peter Moore gets fired."

Wrong. He quit and moved to EA which was closer to home and his family. Cut me a break.

"Microsoft sheds the entire first party/exclusive developers except Rare.
Cancels their own shows that normally would be used to give roadmaps for the next couple years releases.
Has anemic showings at GDC,E3,and TGS."

Just as anemic as the PS3. Ooooo big announcement guys: we're going to incorporate rumble into the PS3 controllers! Like that isn't a snore-fest.

"The only question remains as to what Microsoft is going to do with the existing Xbox division?

* Simply kill it off - take the embarrassing one time PR hit and be done with it
* Or try to transform the Xbox division into a Vista exclusive gaming focused entity where they drop making console hardware and instead pay pc developers to make exclusive games for their platform

Maybe Microsoft will continue putting out 360s and fixing them over and over again, but it is obvious they have made the decision to stop pouring billions into the Xbox mess."

Except, we are hearing nothing of the sort. The only people making these conjectures are the PS3 camps trying to look for some light in their dim tunnels. You guys are grasping at strays and hanging onto a prayer that Microsoft will pull the plug on their Xbox division.

"The plug is being pulled, it is just a matter how long it will take."

Right. They will pull the plug just as soon as Sony pulls the plug on their Playstation 3 mess.

XBOTS are starting to worry though. I always wondered what would happen once they no longer had Halo 3 to look foward to.

I think it's XBOX 720 time.

Before this, XBOTS had an armor around them. No matter what the situation was they could always happily look ahead to Halo 3. Now it's not so.

Halo 3 might of been the changing point after all. But just not the way XBOTS wanted it.

STFU and go play some games, oh ups i forgot you dont have any, you still waiting for late 2008 to play them...

LMAO...

razer3627d ago

to take a sh!t on the Xbox 360?? If anyone sounds worried it's you.. You are willing to lose all your bubbles and look like a freakin douchebag just so you can take a crap on people who like the 360.

It's tough being in last place isn't it??

That writer is just a fanboy

ps3gogetitt3628d ago

THE PS3 big guns come next yr, mgs4 and ff, kz2 with all the hype will disappoint so it's not on my list, hopefully it surprises me.... I think Little big planet will be the killer app next yr, however from a non fanboy perspective i think the 360 still have a great lineup for 08 that will keep it in the lead

mcgrawgamer3628d ago

too human, lbp, and fable 2 are on my list for 08 on the 360. Like i've said before I see all 3 systems doing very well this gen. So to the sony fanboys msoft aint goin no where deal with it, and to the msoft fanboys ps3 aint dead and will never die; deal with it. that is all.

IdontTakeSides3628d ago

UMM i doubt you'll see GeOW until 09...kk..the only thing they'll get from EPIC is UT3....Too Human will blow...!!!

MSFT has over 10 games that look like AAA's in the end I agree with the statment made at the end of the story.

They left out many heavy hitters.

What happend to Huxley, Warhound, Alan Wake, Project Offset, Splinter cell? (theres about 10 more games but the ones listed seem most promising). I know I'm forgeting some games the point is why even post this concern, is it because MSFT doesn't talk about its future lineups?.

ry-guy3627d ago

I read this comment and a thought occured to me.

Hasn't Microsoft's theme been (since E3) to promote this year's holiday line-up? They only wanted to talk and promote games that are coming out within the next 2-3 months.

Microsoft did not want to take the Sony path and talk about games that MAY be seeing shelves during Holiday 08. Perhaps that is why Microsoft has been so mum on games in the future? After the dust has settled it will be interesting to see what Microsoft's next move is.
