Analyst: Market could shift from casual to hardcore this Christmas

The hardcore market could see a considerable surge this holiday thanks to an influx of "AAA" hardcore Xbox 360 titles and a constant shortage of Wii's, according to an analyst with Janco Partners. The analyst also reiterated that he is "cautiously optimistic" about EA's acquisition of BioWare/Pandemic and cast doubt on BioWare's unannounced MMO.

not to mention the price drop and some flagship games on the ps3. The wii might finally take a back seat to one of the other big two.

this guy is just dum even though the shortages the Wll has its still to much for ps3 and 360 to put a dent on it.

i was at game a day before a got my 2nd ps3 and some woman called straight up without stoping for 10 minutes and when the guy finally bothered to pick up the phone(they usually ignore the calls)she asked for a Wll but got let down cuz there was none lol

This guy is confused, even with the CURRENT shortage of Wii's it still wiping the floor with these two consoles. The hardcore is what keeps the industry evolving while the casual keep the industry in good terms. The hardcore spend money like no other, but the casual gamer and their impulse purchases are the icing on the cake. The Wii and DS are the perfect example of that.

Are you saying that wii purchases are impulsive? If you are, I would disagree with you since I waited impatiently for months for the release of it, and I would certainly not call that impulsive. I got mine on launch date, and have not regretted getting it when I did.

There were 34 units in stock in Jena, Missourri when I asked today. No Elites.

Before I moved down from Canada a couple months ago, there were always units @ Zellers.

News of the shortage is over-stated me'thinks.

Some are. For me, Mercury Meltdown is an impulse buy. SSBB is not...not at all at this point...

He's saying the Wii and DS games offer some hardcore games that are not an impulse4 buy but some casual games that run at a lower price that someone can see and just pick it up.

No console, ever, has been an impuse buy.

Maybe. I doubt it.

The Wii, for casual gamers, is undoubtedly a really cool gift.

The 360 and PS3 will never really replace it in that domain. That's not to say that the 360 and PS3s don't have great lineups this holiday- they do- but the Wii is very popular among casuals, not to mention that Super Mario Galaxy is arguably the most anticipated hardcore game of the holiday season.

It would have been and even surer bet if Super Smash and Mario Kart were coming out this year instead of '08, but Mario Galaxy seems good enough.

It's about time. I love the fact that with more casual gamers the industry grows which leads to better things. But the hardcore games need to take focus because most of us will find casual games way too easy and won't be entertained by them for long.
