Wooing female gamers - and game creators - into the industry

Margaret Krohn, 23, may not look like your typical game designer, but she started out like many of her male colleagues by raiding like mad in college – joining others to defeat the big bosses in massively multiplayer games.

In less than three years, Krohn worked her way up from an entry-level job in quality assurance to game designer for Sony Online Entertainment, the San Diego developer behind “EverQuest,” “Star Wars Galaxies” and “Free Realms.” She was exactly what Sony was looking for: a hard worker, a player and a fan – she blogged and hosted a popular podcast for one of Sony’s games.

And it didn’t hurt that she brought a female perspective.
