Shame On You If You Haven't Played Folklore

GamingUnion.net: Folklore, developed by Game Republic and released in the fall of 2007, is a true hidden gem in every sense of the word. This fantastical murder mystery, built upon a combination of action-oriented combat, RPG elements and grand sense of adventure, was likely dwarfed in resources by the world's triple A blockbusters, but still managed to create a cohesive world within these restrictions, one full of gorgeous visuals, smooth and varied combat, and an intriguing narrative delivered in many ways. Folklore also achieved gem status by being largely overlooked when it was released in the notoriously competitive holiday release season. (Folklore, Game Republic, PS3)

This is one of my absolute favourite games on the PS3.

Seems like bad to decent reviews equals a no buy/play from most gamers nowadays. I can't even imagine all of the cult classic games that would've been missed if I follow that logic in the past generations (Dino Crisis, Oddworld: Abe Odysessy, Siren, etc).

It sounds superficial but I decided not to get it because of the lack of trophies :-p In my defense I did buy Valkyrie Chronicles sans trophies.

Also, I tried the demo and it wasn't my cup of tea.

I played it and loved it

Wife got me this for a Christmas gift two years ago. I put a good 20 hours into it, but just didn't care for it. I'm not sure why, but for me everything just didn't seem to click and the story wasn't enough to keep me involved.

I was very surprised considering this type of game is right up my alley (RPGs of all types).

With the community support behind it, though, I'm very surprised it won't see a sequel.

I never actually checked out Folklore past the demo that was on PSN.
Sharingan_no_Kakashi  +   1511d ago
It's pretty fun. One of the few games the uses the sixaxis well. And it has great design. Was actually thinking about playing it again just yesterday.
labaronx  +   1511d ago
it is a real gem for anyone who hasn't played it..... hope for a sequel is seemingly unlikely

Shame on u if u cant respect the fact that not every body must like a game u like.

My thoughts exactly. Shame on me for having an opinion that differs from the author. I have to go tell America she was wrong about letting us think for ourselves, brb.

I did play it, and I kinda hated it. Semi-interesting concept, bad combat/leveling.

But my main gripe is, seriously, who besides unions goes around saying "shame on" anyone these days? Every time I see one of those union protests where they're like, "Shame on Del Taco" I feel like they just recycled a sign they had from 1950.

Could you have a more vanilla denouncement of someone? "Tsk tsk"?

I liked the demo and was willing to buy it at the time but I couldn't find it on my region (Brazil) up to last year when Sony released it here (within official PS3 launch)... When there were so many more arguably better options around.

Shame on me for not importing a half good game, right?

That said, I liked the concept, felt like a card/monster game fight here and there but were a lot more dynamic as you would take 4 quick options and interact in the capture with the sixaxis instead of spend time counting stats. I would buy a improved sequel.

One of my favorite games of this generation.
sp1deynut  +   1511d ago
I did...
...and it kinda sucked. It reminded me of Kingdom Under Fire, gameplay wise...but it was ugly, and boring. But to be fair, I typically don't like those types of games anyway. I much prefer an open, action-oriented RPG like Oblivion, Risen, Divinity II, etc.

It started getting good, but It just got so repetitive mid way through. Never finished :/
RavageX  +   1511d ago
I own it but never finished it, put it off for a rainy day when I want to be involved in a good story. I still don't regret buying it.
FPShooter  +   1511d ago
Very underrated game. Just like heavenly sword. Both deserve a sequel.
ShinraE5  +   1511d ago
I played it back when I owned a PS3 and I didn't take to it personally. It was mediocre at best. Although I like the attempt at celtic lore. There are much better titles on the PS3 to play. If anything, most of NIS's titles are the true lesser known gems of the PS3
Redempteur  +   1511d ago
Played the demo back then ..didn't like it . is the full game that different ?
newn4gguy  +   1511d ago
If you didn't like the demo, you won't like the game.

If you don't like the demo you WONT like the game.

Its the same basic gameplay your playing.

I also played both of the demos that were available but it wasn't good enough for me to buy it.

you can sign all you want there are actually several BAD demos out there that don't show properly what their full game is about .

i was asking because every now and then i find an article like this praising it like some hidden gem like BeyondGoodAndEvil ( that i liked )and i don't understand How this can come back regulary and guessed i might have missed something that's it.
newn4gguy  +   1511d ago
Loved it!

I need to pick this up.
bangoskank  +   1511d ago
I got it about a year ago. Too many better games available to keep me interested at the moment but plan on getting back to it. It definitely has an amazing soundtrack and lots of atmosphere.
clearelite  +   1510d ago
I keep forgetting to pick this game up. Thank you for reminding me!

Couldn't agree more...one of the only games in the PS3's early years that's still in my collection.
