Sega using open-source 3D for Virtua Tennis 4

VGW: While many game studios typically utilize “industry standard” software such as Autodesk’s 3D Studio Max or Maya for their creating 3D models, a technical artist at Sega is thinking a bit differently. Katsuhiko Omori, a technical artist for Sega Japan working on the upcoming Virtua Tennis 4, which releases on May 10, in the US, has decided to use the open source and free-to-download 3D modeling and animation package Blender instead.

lets not try to pretend tools do not matter. Great tools can make bad artist do great things.

bad artist will be bad regardless of the tools. Of course the tools matter but without a person with skills it might as well be rocks.
