Tretton: Japan Quake May Delay Sony's NGP Past 2011 In Some Regions

Sony Corp.’s PlayStation unit may stagger the global release of its next-generation portable game machine because of last month’s Japanese earthquake and tsunami, an executive said.

Sony may introduce the PlayStation Portable, codenamed “NGP,” in only one region this year instead of starting sales in Asia, Europe or the U.S. in time for the end-of-year holiday shopping season, Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said. Tretton declined to say which region might get the handheld first. (Industry, PS Vita, Sony)

Release in the Unites States first! I'll be standing in line day one no doubt. I'm just waiting for an official price announcement to go and completely pay off my preorder!

I want this thing now!

The 3DS will be even further ahead if this is the case =/

Sales aren't all that matter, all that matters is that you enjoy your system.

Don't worry, I'm no 360 fanboy lol. I was just looking at this from a business stand-point. Just sayin that it sucks for Sony.

I'll be getting and enjoying both. There's no reason to limit yourself to one system, unless you just don't have enough money.

This makes me sad but lets try to look at it in a positive light. Now the launch lineup for games should be both larger and better developed.

Also given the popularity of the original psp it would only make sense to launch in Japan first. Even given the recent situation over there I think they would outsell either Europe or the States.

The popularity of the PSPS in Japan could ultimately opt them to launch elsewhere: PSP is still selling very strong after the 3DS launch and an NGP release could slow down PSP sales.

Sony may decide to attract Europe first which is a region Sony usually does well in, or even USA.

Either way, PSP sales in Japan can easily sustain itself, especially with final fantasy type 0 still on the way.

But we'll see :)
