I have noticed many people trying to assert that the games in the Call of Duty franchise are “casual,” as opposed to “hardcore.” What is it that catalyzes this observation for those people? Is it really necessary to differentiate between the two? No clear boundaries exist for the definition of a casual vs. hardcore game; the distinction is merely subjective. However, there are certain aspects which make it easier to tell them apart, and there are games that in this sense are easier to distinguish. The distinction has become increasingly relevant, since it is hard to argue that the overall difficulty of video games has not decreased over the years. What are the characteristics of a casual and a hardcore game(r)? And after analyzing the various aspects of each, would we, as gamers, collectively conclude that Call of Duty is a casual game?
