Sony is a Public company so by doing this they are causing millions of people to lose money. Not a good way to promote themselves.

It's also incredibly funny they rant about free speech but they themselves are annonymous? I want all their details, including credit and debit cards, freedom of information!

Free speech is unrelated to privacy. In fact, free speech means you can say non-slanderous "things" without being persecuted so why would you need their information?

Um, gamingdroid, apply that EXACT comment you made to the hackers themselves. WTF has free speech got to do with being able to hack someone else's software?? Software that is the legal property of Sony, the owner. Hacking into that Sony owned software, distributing the know-how about, is a crime. Free speech has absolutely nothing to do with it one bit
gamingdroid  +   1649d ago
@Shadow Flare
My comment was completely neutral and factual. It applies to all parties, so I'm not sure what you are trying say here....

Perhaps you are a little bit too involved in the matter that really doesn't pertain much to you.

With that said, I don't condone Anonymous action, but warned that you don't want to draw the ire of the public.

Other than n4g.com, most other sites are much more against the actions of Sony and believe in the ability to study DRM and disseminate such information. I certainly believe it would be for the greater good, but the corporations had DMCA enacted in the US.

Hackers are skilled computer geniuses that lack social skills to exist in a normal work environment so they attack from the shadows and make stupid text with poems and rhymes about their motives.

Geohot just wanted a job from Steve Jobs himself, then he went to motorola hacking, then Sony but they never gave him an opportunity because he thinks he is way above everybody else. These guys wont get nowhere with this except being labeled as simple pirates that try to get users personal information. They are common thiefs and thats all.

If you hackers want to hurt SONY, please, develop a better interface for the PS3. make your own firmware without tweaking Sony official one. Stop wasting time of petty attacks on their websites.

EDIT: I can open the webpags normally.. no issues... o_O

People with this free speach bullshit.

Yes you have free speach but what these hackers did is not because of free speach.

By stealing the code from Sony and than distributing it on the net is not free speach. It's called stealing.

If you think this is free speach than you must be ok with me braking into your house and stealing your SS# and than puting it online.

Or if you have a secret sauce recepie that made your restaurant to be famous and successful and I steal the recepie and distribute it online.

In every business there are secrets that must be protect so that the business can be successful. If those secrets come out than anyone with a half a brain can re-create the exact same thing and than what?

What hackers did to Sony was stealing and there is no sugar-coating that. If Sony was out there to stop people speaking ill of the company THAN I would support such actions but what Sony is doing is protecting their property.

Hakcers, you are costing Sony money and you are fucking up our hobbie. Just stop and go and die in a hole somewhere. The world would be a better place. Thank you and fuck you all!

Sony doesn't really make money on those two websites, they are informational websites for users and customers, so they harm people more than Sony.
US sites work well, European are down, while it's SCEA who sued those "freedom fighters".

It's official now: They're so dumb it hurts.

To anyone who calls Anon hackers: You need 2 piece of software which are available in public to perform untrace'able DDoS attack. Monkey could do that.

i'm not sure what to believe, because sony said that it went down because of sporadic maintenance, and it went down before anon "promised" that they were gonna get revenge, because it went down in europe sometime yesterday, but it also was down for me yesterday afternoon (i'm in the US). so i'm not sure if anon is just trying to take the credit for it, because i haven't heard anything about them doing anything until AFTER psn went down, but it wasn't down very long either, so i kinda think it may have just been maintenance, plus the fact that it started in europe and then went to the US...i don't see how that DOESN'T sound like sporadic maintenance like sony said

"The problem is not home brew or pirated games, that's another problem.

Your information is already public, such as your address. You can find it down at the county. Your credit card information shouldn't be available merely because somebody has the source code that in itself is an insecure system.

If you know anything about security, security through obscurity doesn't work.

Publishing flaws in software (after it has been patched) to educate the public actually does more good to society by educating and allowing others to implement safety measures.

Knowledge is power and provides a greater good. That is why we have a patent system to encourage information sharing.

I suppose he's the only rational one because you agree with his opinions right? Being rational doesn't make someone right. There are more equally rational arguments in this thread on the contrary to his comment.

I read his comments yesterday warning us of pissing off hackers. But he sees these hackers as "the public". These people are not supported by the average gamer, they do not represent us. They represent their own sense of justice.

Like many other here I agree with many of the actions they have taken in the past, but this isn't hurting Sony, it's hurting us. This proves to me that they are not apart of us because you don't stub your toe to spite your finger. They're attacking Sony because they're not gamers. Now please tell me how I'm being irrational or kissing the ring of Sony?

All this proves is that 4chan is bored and is full of 13 year olds with some basic computer know-how and too much free time. That and a penchant for ruining a great comic book by trying to rip off it's idea of the power of the people with their incessant usage of Guy Fawks masks.

If Anon wants to be mad at someone for abusing the justice system, why not go after the RIAA for suing little old ladies and 10 year old children for allegedly downloading music? If they want to get angry at big corporations for being greedy why not go after the countless corporations who received government bailouts a few years back only to turn around and give huge bonus payouts to all of their executives? Why not actually do something that has some goddamn merit instead of going after a company who is rightfully trying to protect their intellectual property against a couple of douche bags who illegally disseminated private information, allowing countless other people to use that information in even more nefarious ways?

Anon are cowards, pure and simple. "We are legion. Fear us." Blah blah blah. Maybe one day Anon will actually stand for something worthwhile. Until then, all I can say to them is grow the hell up or go away.

You fools keep making such ignorant comments. Sony needs to back off its bullying practices. Do I like hacking? Absolutely not...I hate everything about it and support no hacks. Not even the so-called harmless ones. I do however have commonsense and I know that all Sony is doing if giving these Hackers a "Cause". They are doing nothing but giving them something to rally around. The fools here and N4G actually think Sony can stop them. History proves they can not. Nobody can. Its not like this is something new and nothing...nothing is hack proof.

Sony should utilize their new relationship with Valve. They could learn a lot about piracy, hacking, and how to treat their customers.

Its not going away. No matter how many times people here deem Hackers as losers or tell them they need to die. News flash! Hackers do not give a shit what you think and the more you become enraged the more pleasure they take in their work.

People like to put out opinions as absolute truths all the time only to be proved wrong and made out to be a fool 24 hours later.
Heartnet  +   1649d ago
@Havok if hackers didnt care what people thought then why wud they post what they have accomplished on their blogs and what not...

The term "terrorism" comes from French terrorisme, from Latin: 'terror', "great fear", "dread", related to the Latin verb terrere, "to frighten". The terror cimbricus was a panic and state of emergency in Rome in response to the approach of warriors of the Cimbri tribe in 105BC. The French National Convention declared in September 1793 that "terror is the order of the day". The period 1793–94 is referred to as La Terreur (Reign of Terror). Maximilien Robespierre, a leader in the French revolution proclaimed in 1794 that "Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible."[9]

fear dread un provoked random or malicious attacks with no care as to colateral targets.

saddly that fits the generally assumed definition of terrorism

as to who sony there employyees and there facilitys in this case websites.

they warned then attacked with a further warning that attacks would continue

One should say the most effective as DOS is very easy to do and very cheap to do from a resource stand point not to mention that resources is essentially unlimited as well.

The fix is to block the IP address of the offenders. Sony will be up and running in a few hours or half a day as they analyze the date.

The major problem now is damage control as this will be picked up by the news and information about the lawsuits/hacks/piracy and etc will be spread even more.

It simply shows that their position is totally unjustified, and having run out of reasonable a logical arguments have resorted to internet vandalism - totally childish.

See people?? This is what hackers are good for. I wouldn't be suprised if they fuck up PSN next. Than what will all the smart guys who supported the hackers say??? Thank you for fucking up my gaming experience you duchebags???

I hope that Sony will crack down on these bastards with full force.

But thank you again hackers for costing Sony more money and taking away time and money from video game developement. You hackers aren't on the gamers side you are on your own side and I hope you all die soon!!

I said that 1.) they aren't really a group. 2.) They are mostly script kiddies from 4chan who claim to be acting as "anonymous" when they do something but have no real connections or organization and 3.) That they get caught a lot when they do stuff because they are just silly script kiddies.

Now they've (probably really just a he) DOS'd a commercial site of a company with notoriously bad online security . Chinese hackers probably wouldn't get caught. Some evil weirdo CS grad student at UC Berkeley probably wouldn't get caught. But some guy who hangs out on 4-Chan probably WILL get caught. And he'll have a couple of even dumber copy-catters out there claiming to be the rest of anonymous. It's silly.

It's just a ddos attack. They did the same thing with CNN a year or so ago and the site was down for a good...3 hours in total.

A ddos attack isn't exactly complicated, it doesn't require you to be an elite hacker in order to do it.

It's about as far as this "hacker" group can go.

Im not sure why this is exactly going on.
But from wray77 comment, its about privacy?
So in the end its also for the interest of "innocent gamers".

It is suppose to affect all of you, thats the point!
They do want attention to get their point across and make people get the idea of what they are trying to do.
But so many seem to miss that I guess.
DA_SHREDDER  +   1649d ago
agreed Wray. also, Sony actually robbed me by charging me 2 times for the COD dlc, and after I sent them the proof of what they did, they still decided that it wasn't their fault. I actually had to press fraud charges on them, and while i did get half my money back, they ended up banning my account until I give them the money they feel they are entitled to. And to make matters worse, i have money in my wallet. Also, i was like, well fuck it , give me back all the money i spent on the psn, i dont even wanna fuck with sony anymore after this, but i guess they think they can push us little people around. Thats why i guess they say what they say? Karma is a bitch isn't it Sony?

wray77  +   1649d ago
Dear Sir,

This is about more than "gamers" and pirates.

I see it's a black and white world you live in below, if one's wrong than the other must be right.

NeloAnjelo  +   1649d ago
That is where you are wrong. My privacy has not been comprised. Its only about gamers and pirates. One makes the industry successful and the other destroys it. One supports, while the other breaks.

Geohotz, et al are the ones who CAN violate your privacy. And guess what? They feel that its not breaking the law.
palaeomerus  +   1649d ago
Geohotz didn't violate anyone's privacy. Sony did however when they improperly subpoenaed records of who looked at his site. They claim they will only use that for justifying why they chose to sue in California but who knows that they will do with that?

You whine about hackers harming consumers with this DOS attack and they are but you ignore the way that publishers hurt consumers with DRM and one use tokens to fight "piracy" (they are obviously really targeting used game sales) and yet the DRM doesn't fight piracy at all since the pirates crack it out and don't have to worry about it while the paying customers do.

Sony Music was putting root-kit installers on music CD's that triggered if you PLAYED a CD on your PC that compromised PC security. Not ripped, but PLAYED.

I think DOS attacks are stupid but Sony is not blameless or faultless here and this really has very little to do with Geohotz. The guy or guys doing this are using him as an excuse and trying to win very temporary internet fame for their Anonymous meme/gag.
#19.4.1 (Edited 1649d ago ) | Agree(6) | Disagree(8) | Report
NeloAnjelo  +   1649d ago

Since you show such clear perspective, and I am "whining"... what will Sony possible do with thousands of IP addesses? Even mine is on there. Clealy its to identify other hackers. Secondly I never said that GeoHotz violated anyone's privacy. I said hackers can... very different statements as I was replying to wray77.

Developers will always seek to make money. That is business. Why should all the money for used games go to the distributors? That makes no sense. I buy used games, and I want to support the developers. I don't agree with the way it being done, but what other choice is there?

We all talk about morals, like if making money in a business world is wrong. I'll admit that not all developers and/or publishers are trustworthy, however, getting it free is unacceptable. GeoHotz placed himself in the spotlight. His antics alone shows that he himself has no morals or integrity.

Finally your DRM argument proves my point. The actions of hackers only leads to honest, paying consumers suffering as a result. More updates, more time, space, and more security because of a small minority. Yet they call that fighting for free speech? Well sorry that's a load of crap.

Nelo is right... Sony would've never conceived that DRM root-kit if pirates didn't exist.

As far as DA_SHREDDER's frustration with Sony not refunding his money, I can relate to that. Sony needs to do a better job of catering to their customers who have legitimate billing claims instead of having a strict 'all sales are final' policy.

Illegal as f*ck, and this isn't helping Geohot. Sony could claim that this guy is working on Geodude's behalf.
palaeomerus  +   1649d ago
If they can't prove that, then who cares? This is between Sony and the script kiddy calling himself Anonymous this week. It isn't reasonable to blame it on Hotz without proof of his direct involvement. Hotz is a REAL hacker with a real skill set for penetrating embedded security schemes. He probably has no desire to be involved with DOS bombing idiots from 4-chan who have a record for getting caught. within a week of doing what ever they do and NOT being a real hacker group so much as a nom de guerre for people planning mischief independently.

This attack is from someone seeking to be a parasite to the publicity associated with Hotz' case. He is not supporting Hotz. He is probably telling the "friend" that will turn him in about this right now expecting praise for messing with Sony.

I wouldn't say there was a backlash against Sony even if it was the intention as I and the many other gamers were the ones stopped from enjoying online gaming last night.

I paid for the console and paid for the game so Sony and the publisher have their cash whether I'm able to play or not.
Senden  +   1648d ago
Did it really take down the whole PSN? I just thought it took down the websites. While it's true that it hurts you guys a bit (one night without gaming is hardly the end of the world but it's pretty embarrassing for Sony so from a saving face point of you, I think they got the worst out of it.
The_KELRaTH  +   1648d ago
I agree it was just irritating. My clan was in the middle of a Killzone 3 match when it all just came to a halt.

I'm not so sure it would be embarrasing to Sony - it's not like many other major companies haven't suffered the effects of virus's, DDoS attacks etc over the years but I'm sure gamers would soon get very frustrated if this started to happen on a weekly or even daily event.

DDoS is a criminal offence in UK/ Europe so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
