Over 200 employees let go. Three studios closed.
The game didn't look like it would see a release date to be honest.
Wow, the Agency looked like it was near completion. They were doing a lot of PR work for it last year, but I can see why they cancelled it.
They were taking forever to finish that game. I remember seeing the first footage released. But that was such a long time ago. I don't know what was happening. Good thing they're "reorganizing" SOE.
Yes well at least it's not Agent that's being cancelled, and maybe this means that Blade & Soul is coming to PS3 soon, I'm actually pretty excited about it. The only reason I don't play MMORPGs is because of the graphics and blade and soul looks amazing.
I guess I have to remove it from The List
last we heard about this game was because most of the devs that finished working on DC Online were sent to this one, maybe they got sacked too
This bodes well for DC Universe though! Less competition in the PS3 MMO arena! When I saw the digital copy on the store, I almost bit! If I thought I would have the time to make the most of the $15, it wouldn't even have been a question!
I'm not surprised, seeing as the game looked like arse.
That is the price of having all of those first party studios. You have to pay for their upkeep. WHy do you think that Capcom is outsourcing their projects? Even Inafune stated that they might only be able to work on 2 titles in house but outsourcing, they can have five or six projects at the same time. Layoffs suck tho regardless of who.
weew i thought that said the agent i was like noooooooooooooooooo
gay. i was gonna pick it up.
Seemed they learned from APB's lesson.
I don't know... I smell April Fools.
Its been april fools day in Japan for over 15 hours already. But Sony is known to drop nasty surprises in April fools day. I remember the last surprise they dropped on us in April fools day... It was removal of Other OS! I was one of those who thought it was a joke. So this time I'm assuming its not a joke, it must be a way for Sony to drop the news in friendlier way.
Nothing global about it. It's all American men and women losing their jobs while the trillion dollar JAPANESE company wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars a week fighting an anorexic 21 year AMERICAN kid in civil court. Go back to Japan Sony, we don't need you.
@intheknow you know theirs a difference between the japanese yen and the american dollar just so you know i can see why they cancelled it it was announced in 2007 meaning they have been working on it for at least 4 years plus the time to get the original game engine and gameplay up thats probably 5 or 6 years they have been working on this game and have not released it yet
That sux! I was still looking forward to the Agency! The chick on the cover got my attention because I always felt that Joanna Dark should have been designed like her. Feel sorry for those who lost their jobs though... But things like this will continue for many companies trying to cope with a very unstable economy.
If it is an April's Fool Joke, count the world fooled, because Gamefly has just removed the game from everyone's game Q.
meh, wasn't really interested in that game anyway, they should focus that money/effort elsewhere really.
Its a shame, but considering they're reorganizing to "Focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties." Maybe they could bring the next Planetside or Everquest game on PC & PS3.
That quote definitely did make me feel better. I'd be up for a new Planetside!
That's a shame. But Agency was obviously not getting anywhere. SOE certainly does need "reorganization"
Sad. I wonder if at least the Facebook game is still up. O.o 12
April Fools maybe?? Honestly I don't believe a lot of news today.. This would be sad to see them all lose there job I hope its a joke its not nice losing your job in the current climate. I mean what the hell am I supporting these devs for if they losing there jobs?
why would you think it is a april fools if you Read the article it even says what has happened and april Fools is tomorrow not today
its not a joke. april fools is tomorrow if it really was april fools, your statement would also be a joke
The gaming media has so little credibility already; they really shouldn't be playing April Fools!
"april fools is tomorrow" now while the article is dated March 31, it only went up a few hours ago. thats all well and good for those in countries where its still March 31.....but the whole world isnt in the same time zone lol. im in australia and its been April 1 for 10.5 hours already, so this article came out on April 1 to me. now im not saying its an april fools joke, it obviously isnt - but dont be so quick to jump up and down saying someone cant even tell the date properly, when you cant even understand the concept of different times/days in different countries all over the world. on topic - sucks for the people that lost their jobs. i wasnt interested in the agent in the slightest, but its never good to see studios close.
it would be a horrible joke.
those are the kind that usually succeed...
Until they surprise everyone with a revamped 'The Agency' .. huh?
Anything goes on this day.
This is april fools joke?
Could be April Fools. Usually a joke isn't revealed until the day of, whilst being played a few days before. At least with online sites.
it's a April Fools Joke.
Bummer guess Sony is down a couple studios.
The Agent and the Agency, I always get them confused. Which is which now?
The Agent is being made by Rockstar Games. Not much is known about the project besides the fact ist PS3 exclusive. The Agency is espionage-themed MMO FPS by Sony Online Entertainment developed for PC/PS3.
Well I heard Sony labeling something SNEA and I figured someone was getting a cut somewhere. Now I see it. Focus being enhanced on Planetside Next and Everquest III. Not a bad choice. I'd take one of those two over the Agency anyday.
Sad but it's ok. Sony can close half their studios and still have three times more than Microsoft.
April fools. Maybe you all should finally lighten up. lmao at all the serious comments.
Kind of saw that coming sadly :/
Holy s**t for a second there i thought it said agent. Well that sux game looks good.
Yeah it always had me kind of confused. Agent and agency were so close in name. Agent is the console cold war game? And agency was an mmo....that we heard less about than we have Agent? So yeah agency is gone but we still have agent.
No, there is actually gameplay of the Agency. Agent doesn't have anything more than title art.
@Kaveti, oh it did? I learn something new every day.
ya me too i was pretty shocked
Would be nice if Sony just owned up and made it official. They're likely just going to let it hang on the vine a while longer.
They did.. Below is SOE's statement in full: As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios. As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games. All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern. This strategic decision will have no impact on SOE's current portfolio of live games; additionally SOE will transition development efforts for the Denver and Tucson studios' suite of products to its San Diego headquarters. This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages, and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year.
That sux, but hey, what can they do? Not making money means things need to change.
It's no april 1 yet you fool.
it is somewhere... Not that I think it's a joke.
I don't think so but The Agency website is still up. Shame for sony to cancel a project this far into development, it looked basically finished from what I've seen... :(
I doubt it. Making over 200 people believe they're losing their jobs is not a good April Fools joke.
Who said they are making them believe anything? They could have been informed about this before anything was released. And for the record, I remember in the last few years, that Aprils fools jokes were started a few days before April fools, to throw people off.
Like venomcarnage89 said, the staff may be involved if it's a 'joke.' I mean, it sure would be a surprise and a boost in 'The Agency' hype.. If, say, they were to show a revamped game at like, E3 or something.
it's not april yet...
It is in Bangkok!
Nonono, it's like the Stifmeister once said: BangCock!
Regardless, whenever you say Bangkok you got to say it loud!
And punch a guy's balls at the same time.
i thought DC Universe success was going to give nice results... tough times indeed
I remember when this game was announced, I thought it lookd cool, they should just delay it
It was actually playable behind doors at E3 last year... kinda shocked its canned.
Oh, well fudge you. Seriously. That's mean. You've managed to keep me semi-interested in that game for almost four years now! I guess there was reason to see this one coming.
Ugghh... I hate hearing about layoffs. I thought with the success DC Universe Online appears to be having that The Agency would stand a chance to see the light of day. Everquest is probably long over due to be shut down to be honest.
