MTV Addresses Rock Band Guitar Compatibility

Over on MTV's Multiplayer blog, they've collected some frequently asked Rock Band questions to get to the bottom of what would-be rockers want to know. After all, the MTV Multiplayer folks should have a certain special degree of access as Rock Band is being published by MTV Games; "coincidently [our Rock Band] source has the same bosses we do," admits the author of the post.

Unfortunately, their source wasn't entirely forthcoming. When asked if the Guitar Hero III Gibson Les Paul controller would work with Rock Band, they were told "Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards." Which doesn't really answer the question.

Agreed, But they did answer the question if you read between the lines.

"Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards."

"Platform controller standards" - Means We used the same colors and positions as Guitar Hero. How the hell would it not be compatible.

All this fuss over nothing. IMO.

If my Xplorer Guitar from GH2 will work on Rock Band and will work on GH3. Why the hel1 wouldn't the new one do the same. Common sense gets lost in the tubes of the internet. But I can see why after Red Octane beat around the bush trying to knock Rock Band down a notch. GH3 is going to be killed by Rock Band...But I will still get both of em'.

One more thing, Why would they answer that outright and risk losing Hardware sales. This is simply a STFU about it statement because I know over at the Rock band forums it is full of dumb questions like this.

It IS an issue for us PS3 owners though. We don't have a wireless guitar that we can use with the game, so we're stuck buying one one way or the other. I'm getting Rock Band, so it's very important to me if THEIR controller will work with GH3 when I get it down the line.

Colors of the buttons really don't matter all to much, for the most part it's a cosmitic feature to help the end user. As long of the buttons on the guitar match the input on-screen everybody should be able to get used to it.

It's still irritating that neither Hamonix nor Red Octane will give a straight answer to "Does the other guys controller work with your game?" or "Does your controller work with the other guys game?"

Of course they know - they just don't want to tell us so we think we have to buy new hardware.

Me, I'm getting GH3 on PS2 - get some more mileage out of the original controllers. Then I'll get RB for my PS3 and if the guitar controllers work maybe get GH3 as well, certainly GH4.
