Top 5 RPGs from the Land of the Rising Sun

GameDynamo - "Japanese game developers have left an indelible mark on our culture in a variety of ways, and this article is a tribute to one of my favorite genre’s, the Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). These games have inspired us, taken us on adventures to strange exotic worlds, and introduced us to a range of characters that we’ve come to cherish (and sometimes dislike). Some of the characteristics of a JRPG include a silent protagonist, great music, fun combat, and above all, compelling stories. Here’s a list of what I considered to be the top five JRPGs and the reasons why - with plenty of spoilers!" (Chrono Trigger , Culture, Dragon Quest V, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection., Nintendo DS, PS2, PSP, Retro, Suikoden I&II )

You can already tell this article was written by some old gamer. Seriously list some modern RPGS.
hay  +   1593d ago
You can't get better jRPGs than some oldies.
Dart89  +   1593d ago
War How old are you 16??
And yea like hay said old school rpgs are the best the only rpg i have liked this generation was demons soul other than that rpgs aren't what they use to be.

I love Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Souls, Lost Odyssey and the like... but they can't touch Chrono Trigger. The only JRPG in recent memory I would hail as a "classic" is Persona 4.

Is Chrono Trigger really THAT good?...

Everyone who knows anything about RPGs swears by it. I've yet to play it. Might get it on the DS.
Capt-FuzzyPants  +   1592d ago
Play it. It really is good. The only thing i did not like was Crono didnt talk but that doesnt affect too much.
hay  +   1589d ago
Actually I think it's better than that.

Where is Ogre Battle 64?
bozebo  +   1592d ago
elitist article :P

Top 5 is a bit hard to juggle to be honest. Those 5 certainly deserve to be in a top list, but they aren't necessarily better than more recent jrpgs.

Who played those 5 games then played ff7 and said something like "omg theyve totally made the game nooby and casual now".

If it was a top 10 most of those 5 would be in it, along with some from the zelda series and more FF games.

As for jrpgs on the current gen, lost odyssey is the only one I like... also known as the true ff13 :P

Zelda isn't an rpg.
bozebo  +   1592d ago
debatable, maby it's an action-adventure-rpg, depends which one from the series perhaps.

but I suppose, it isnt a true jrpg in the sense that the others listed are.

Not debatable. The game spawned from the original text/parser adventure games. It has the same concepts except has action added to it. Anyone who says it is anything other than an Action-Adventure has no idea what they are talking about.

i think someone missing LandStalker from Sega. It is on the same caliber of crono trigger (each with very innovative game play and story) for me. That and also zelda (ocarina of time). Some nes ones are great too (dragon warrior).

This guy knows whats hes talking about. Very good article.
madjedi  +   1592d ago
No xenogears or legend of the dragoon or parasite eve sounds more like a top jrpg from each main system than anything else, no final fantasy 3 or tactics love wtf.

Tactics was pretty good but making a top 5 list with all of the great clasics is very very very very very difficult. If i made one today it could be completely different from one i have made a couple of months ago.
tieryas  +   1592d ago
very good point with which i agree, haha =)
i also did leave out strategy rpg games in this list as i felt they deserved another category, but there are plenty of good ones, including FF tactics, the above mentioned ogre battle, shining force (and part 3 which I loved), disgaea, jean d'arc (a personal favorite) and on and on.
tieryas  +   1592d ago
there's some really great RPG mentions and i agree, games like persona 3, xenogears, the tales game, and lost odyssey (as well as dozens of others) should be part of any comprehensive JRPG list. I also tried to limit myself to one game per franchise so I didn't have a list of FF1, 4, 6, 7, 10. thanks for reading and commenting

I didnt know Japan was the Land of the Rising Sun. I thought it was England. I guess ill look it up.
Tex117  +   1592d ago
Demon's Souls is a modern day classic.

But Chrono Trigger and FFVI are incredible games.
