Crysis 2 beat Halo at its own game

Sarcastic Gamer revisits the old Halo v. Crysis comparison with fresh eyes, on the heels of Crysis 2's release.

From the article: "People love to love the Halo series. Heck, people love to hate the Halo series. It is undeniable, however, that the Halo series does get a couple of things right. Open battles, unscripted combat and making the gamer feel like a one man army up against hopeless odds, are just a few of the things that Halo does oh, so very right. Back in April, 2010, I asked: could Crysis 2 out Halo, Halo: Reach? Maybe not in sales, but could Crysis 2 do a better job with a FPS style that Halo basically created

On Tuesday, Crysis 2 was released on all platforms and did just that. It beat Halo at its own game. How? Read on."

i have a feeling it will get hot in here

I like Halo a lot, and it doesn't bother me if a game comes out that does something better.

It would suck if games didn't get better.

I think that is how we all should feel as gamers. No?

Problem is, I bought Halo: Reach on launch day and enjoyed it immensely.

I didn't buy Crysis 2 after trying the demo.... Heck I bought Bulletstorm day one as well.

Point being, Crysis 2 even if it is a graphical marvel (I haven't seen it first hand in single player mode), didn't measure up in terms of multi-player enjoyment.

So I'm not sure how Crysis 2 beat Halo, not that it matters anyhow! In fact, I'm more interested in Homefront.

I agree with the title. What else can the Halo series do now, but try to match and/or surpass Crysis in graphics and pure badassness. While Halo does have a sandbox feel to it, Crysis beats it + the graphics. The only thing I could say Halo beats Crysis at is the online multiplayer(Crysis will probably get better) because I'm thinking I really don't need split-screen co-op from Crysis. No disrespect to Halo though.

Crysis 2 has the best shooter gameplay at the moment. Very fun and original.

Halo trumps with polish. Everything just flows so well. Crysis 2 has some ai errors, pop in, and units getting stuck in walls. Still, for a first console attempt... Watch out for crysis 3.

In some ways yes, in some ways no.

I'm going to have to say that Halo is still better overall though.

I like them both, both great fps games that have their own special qualities.

Finally! Common non-fanboyish Sense!

crysis is really fun online I think. I like the individual weapon/armor customization, and the armor abilities that are always available and level up too.

But halo also has more players allowed, more game types, a map creator, spliscreen(online too) and vehicles.

I like both for different reasons. I havent finished the SP in crysis 2 yet but it seems pretty cool so far.

I love Halo, it is one of my favorite franchises . But i think it's time for some innovation in the series. Anyway, Halo was one of the most revolutionary FPS, a thing that Crysis 2 isn't.

Nowadays no game is trying to innovate, they're just copying old formulas from successful games. I miss the old times when devs were trying to innovate, to create a new product.

Crysis 2 couldn't even beat its predecessor at its own game. Its a step backwards from Crysis, so how could it be better than Halo?

Shackdaddy8362375d ago

Many people would disagree with you.

LGFreedom2375d ago

I disagree. Crysis was on an island nobody cared about and fighting the aliens was the least fun part of that game.

Crysis 2 is more focused, the enemies are way more fun to fight this time around and the streamlining of the powers is a natural evolution... Plus the NY setting is simply awesome.

BiggCMan2375d ago

The single player alone is a massive step back from the first game. Its no longer a gigantic open world game, its a room to room shooter, with bigger rooms than most games, thats it. The gameplay style is different to cater to the Call of Duty crowd. The graphics are average at best if you look close enough to see its faults, its full of flat and bland textures. The pop in is horrendous as well. Then theres the multiplayer which is simply just another me-to experience. Its just like everything else with no innovations. Its not its own game anymore.

Stop lying to yourself, the campaign in crysis was not THAT open. Try to remember you walking for 10 minutes in the jungle.... see? you can't. You always had a path, and then some fighting place, just like in crysis 2.

It's just feel less open because it's in a city setting, but I do think it's still more or less the same formula.

And crysis also had its share of crappy textures (read rocks for exemple)
