Why is Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2.0 engine so special?

CVG: Speaking at GDC earlier this month, senior producer Patrick Bach talked us through the engine piece-by-piece, describing exactly what it allows the studio to do that it couldn't achieve in the past.

Here, we repeat Patrick's comments in full. It's an incredible looking slice of gaming, but just wait until you hear the thing in action - just one more facet of Frostbite 2.0's capabilities...

jeseth2461d ago

Because it looks sexy.

Because
PC - DX11 , 64 bit, Windows 7
PS3 - MLAA, Cell programming
Xbox - Good Port ( Best looking on Xbox360)

I'm not sure If they cancel DX9 on xbox360
But PS3 uses OpenGL

BeastlyRig2461d ago

Is it not because it is an engine that is made specifically for dx11 & 64bit PCs? http://bf3blog.com/2010/12/...

Can you smell what dice is cookin?

A special engine is when you see it you say "oh my..."

And that was the case.

As much as I love seeing dozens of articles declaring Battlefield 3 to be the best looking game ever, I really wish they would show us some multiplayer gameplay. That's where the heart of Battlefield is.

"Destruction is also a big part of Battlefield games nowadays. We're expanding it both on a macro level by being able to take down full buildings but also in the micro-destruction where you can chip away small pieces from cover, which will come into play throughout BF3."

Wait a minute......

TAKE DOWN FULL BUILDINGS?? So that Fault Line II gameplay trailer..... THAT WAS REAL TIME DESTRUCTION?

-End statement

IHateYouFanboys2461d ago

well not exactly.

remember, you could take down entire buildings in Bad Company 2 as well - but it didnt look anything like the pre-scripted damage. that Fault Line II gameplay trailer was clearly a scripted event.

DigitalAnalog2461d ago

I don't know about you, but "full" buildings in BC2 wasn't like the one here in this trailer.

-End statement

peowpeow2461d ago

That's what he means though, this is single-player therefore most likely scripted to get the best out of the moment :D But normal destruction (i.e. multiplayer) may be similar to BC2 (look alot better of course)

LightofDarkness2461d ago

In an interview, one of the designers said you could most certainly do that in multiplayer and singleplayer.

andreasx2461d ago

when you jizz in your pants and you go like "OMG!!!" then it is a special engine, like frostbite 2.0
