It's technically been 3 years for the PS3. The first two years was an uphill struggle for the PS3. It wasn't till the Slim that it really started to pick up steam and establish itself as a true contender this generation.
MGS4 was basically the savior for the PS3. Anybody who disagree with that needs to warp back in time to the era where the PS3 didn't have many games or exclusives to push sales.
He is somewhat right though the Slim did help establish the PS3, but to call the PS3 not a contender before then is pretty hilarious lol.
@Logicwins
Uncharted 2 didn't move as many consoles as MGS4 did lmfao. Also MGS4 sold way more then people predicted back then. Also when Sony was losing all 3rd party support remember the rumors flying about MGS4 going to the Xbox 360 ?
You need to do your research bro because Uncharted 2 would've been too little to late lol.
I believe Metal Gear 4 sold almost 2mil copies in its first week alone I don't remember though. Uncharted 2 numbers didn't hit that at all least for a while lol.
Dude listen the point is if MGS4 went to the Xbox 360 that year Sony would be in trouble. Metal Gear Solid 4 helped save the Ps3 when Sony didn't have ANY EXCLUSIVES at the time. Uncharted 2 didn't get hyped until 2009 E3 LMFAOOO.
Go look at the PS3 sales June 12 2009 and tell me MGS4 didn't help LOL.
MGS4 helped a little bit, but I know for me and millions of others. We boycotted the PS3 because of how expensive it was, but when the much lower priced Slim came out. We lifted the boycott and finally accepted the PS3. The smartest move Sony ever made!
"MGS4 was basically the savior for the PS3. Anybody who disagree with that needs to warp back in time to the era where the PS3 didn't have many games or exclusives to push sales."
I disagree. If you could name ONE game that made the PS3 pick up steam it was Uncharted 2 because it was the first PS3 exclusive that appealed to a wide range of gamers and was heavily advertised.
MGS4 was for MGS fans just like GT5 was for GT fans. These games, while good in their own right, don't appeal to the mainstream...Uncharted 2 did.
@stealthdawg- I wasn't referring to sales, I was referring to the PS3's turn around as far as mainstream conciousness is concerned. From MY personal experiences and from what I've read from forums and threads across different gaming news sites across the web..Uncharted 2 CONVERTED more naysayers than ANY other PS3 exclusive to date.
The fact that MGS4 moved more consoles than Uncharted 2 only means that MGS fans from the PS1 and PS2 days bought a PS3 to play MGS4...duh.
I don't understand why your focusing on sales so much. By YOUR logic, Modern Warfare 2 was the game that turned things around for the PS3.
Dude sales talk end of the day what is Mainstream apparently COD proves that. Judging from the SALES MGS4 and GT5 the 2 games you mentioned are mainstreamed period. Both sold over 5million copies GT5 surpassed Uncharted 2 in a couple of months.
If any game was to be establish Sony name Gran Turismo 5 would be that game.
When saint said an uphill struggle he was referring to sales obviously. Sony was dead last with NO games.
No by my Logic GT5 would be the game since it's Exclusive to the PS3. Metal Gear Solid is a mainstream game and is more known then Uncharted. For anybody who is into games to sit here and tell me Uncharted 2 is more Mainstream then MGS4 makes me laugh.
No Metal Gear Solid fans also were on the Xbox 360 and for them to experience the game they would need to buy the PS3 which helped MOVE consoles towards Sony. Which is why I said Sony couldn't afford to lose anymore 3rd party support at that time.
Metal Gear Solid 4 did more for the PS3 then you can imagine.
Uncharted 2 wasn't the first PS3 exclusive to do that. It was Metal Gear Solid 4 since that was the last chapter of one of the greatest characters in gaming history and his name is Solid Snake.
Here lets refer to Vgchartz since thats the only damn website I can find the article of what MGS4 did for the PS3 that year lol
I don't know why people are in a rush for new consoles. Consoles just became some what affordable lol and now people want new beefed up even more expensive consoles ? I'm quite happy with this generation.
The only thing I see next Gen bringing is better online and more features to enhance online gaming as a whole.
Exactly okay for all the people who keep saying we need new consoles, now do you guys have the money to lend the rest of us to buy a new console cuz i'm pretty sure many people don't have the money right now.I'm fine with the current consoles.
Many won't have the money when the next-gen arrives anyways. What's your point?
The launch of a new console doesn't means an immediate shift. When the next-gen consoles launch, there'll still be game releases for the current-gen for an additional year or two.
I would rather see companies start thinking more about innovation and fun at this point. Maybe studying some of the old school games and what made them so special. What developers did with basic hardware when they created timeless classics. We could have a golden age of gaming if some financial pressure is removed. If game development wasn't so expensive, devs wouldn't have to play it so safe all the time by releasing the same [email protected] That's one of reasons you will see more creative games on platforms that are easy/cheap to develop for.
Off topic(kind of): I would really like to see Counterstrike Source to come to PS3(if we ever get Steam) in 720P+ @60 FPS, with PS Move compatibility. That would give me hope.
The upcoming handhelds are considered 8th Generation platforms. For the time being I consider those platforms enough for a couple years before moving onto the next home console generation shift. The consoles we have are suitable enough for awhile longer... especially in this current economy.
However I would like to see Nintendo releasing a new console that caters toward the hardcore crowd and less on the casual. But hey it's Nintendo, what do we expect?
First, my 360 red-ringed, Microsoft did fix it buy lost their credibility for me. Granted I had had the thing since about 4 months after launch, so it was before the new ones came out that were more 'reliable'.
Second, because of MGS4. I was and still am a huge MGS fan and was so desperate to play the new one almost a year after release, I finally bite the bullet and traded in my 360 with about 20 games and got my PS3...with just LBP and MGS4.
WOuld I do the same again if Sony released a PS4 in the next year or 2? No.
Sony and Microsoft would be CRAZY to release a new console within the next year atleast. People cant afford it. Yeah it would sell, the hardcore fans would buy them, but the big 2 would notice much lower sales, lower profit and therefore lower stock values. All adds up to less investment, blah blah blah.
Microsoft by all means SHOULD go ahead a make the 720..most retarded name ever but anyway, as is 360 (360 what exactly?)...simply because its, what, a decade old now? And they spent far too much time scrambling behind the PS3 to release a version that rivaled it.
We cant afford new systems these days though. The PS3 has barely begun to be fully utilised, which is why we are seeing increasingly more PS3 exclusive games being released, and the 360 is clearly past its' prime. The PS3 therefore EASILY has a good 2 years more life before people get bored with it.
BUT, both consoles would continue to live on happily if no new console was released.
Unfortunately, the new release would be a fat businessman decision as there would be potentially bigger profits involved for Sony or Microsoft per console sold, rather than whatever it is they get for each game sold.
As I said previously to someone New consoles =/= innovation in games.
Its games like Call of Duty and Madden(that release every Year) are what tell Developers they don't need to innovate.
When you have games like Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet that show innovation and are rewarded with it but are shunned by the media cause of their platform then you have a bad situation.
"On the Xbox 360, you can't even play original Xbox games unless you download them from Xbox LIVE and pay for them again. "
really? might want to rethink that one. you can play probably 95% of the original Xbox games on the 360 simply by putting the original xbox disc into the xbox 360s disc drive and pressing 'play game' on the menu.
"2. New Tech Allows for Longer Console Life Expectancy"
well it does and it doesnt. yes, people find new ways to do things and get more power out of a console..........but in that 6-12 months that it took them to figure that out, CPU speeds increased 25% in the outside world. RAM sizes increased 50%. HDD costs dropped 25%. so while you can make games look better over time, compared to what you could have if they released a new console, those games would look pretty poor in comparison. the rate of improvement and advances in the tech world is becoming faster and faster, and having a console stick around for 8 years isnt something i want.
Apologies for the incorrect assumption about Xbox 360 backwards compatibility. It is indeed compatible with most games in North America, although the PAL versions and the Japanese one aren't as lucky. The sentence was properly updated in the article. Thanks for catching that.
A new console?? My mommy just bought me a PS3/360 . Theres no way she will buy me a new one so ill just put down the idea of moving forward with new and better tech. Maybe someday ill get a job and be able to afford new stuff when they launch. Until then i hope consoles remain in the dark ages with outdated specs so people like me can afford them.
Innovation can happen with better hardware and updated tech. I want something that can push 10X the amount of polygons, heck even if it is the same game I guess I am a graphics slut but I want to see all the same type AAA titles we enjoy now with much better hardware specs.
The need to sell it cheap and plan on money from the games and online services.
I'm more than ready for a new Nintendo system. The others? Not so much.
i can happily wait a few years yet. got my gaming pc on the way soon that will tie me over

Because I am poor.
