After hearing MS brag about their "best lineup in history" it got Loot Ninja thinking, throughout the years gamers have had different eras in gaming and consoles, which is everyone's favorite?
It has to be the introduction of 3D gaming with the PS1 and N64 for me.
Playstation is my favorite console of all time.. 32 bit era was the GREATEST... (95-2000 before i bought a PS2)
SNES has the greatest line up in history Period
i don't know about that but that's the era when gaming was the most fun for me
hands down the best SNES game ive ever played
8 bit power! NES and Seg Master Systems paved the way for RPG's and great games. Just htink of all the old games that have been redone this generation like Metroid, Ninja Gadien, GTA, etc. Very little new IP's have been killer, they have gone back to the 8bit days and rehashed them!
I voted Commodore/Amiga era...when I started gaming.
I like the current era never had a hd until now. Never been amazed by graphics like I have with gears of war.
I've had tons of fun throughout all gens but, this gen has left me with a dropped jaw at some of the stuff that's come out and is coming out. Gears is awesome, Heavenly Sword is amazing, Drakes Fortune, Mass Effect and even motorstorm. There's just so much going on in these games now a days. Amazing physics, graphics and fun gameplay also. It's a good time to be a gamer no matter what console you're on.
Well I am going to go ahead and vote this generation the worst. I like maybe 8 games total between the 3 current gen systems. Probably N64 my favorite followed by PS2 era. During the PS2 era, i owned a ps2, xbox and a gamecube. I was in gaming heaven with all three systems.
ps2 era, then the snes/genesis era, then the current gen, then ps1 era. justification: i seriously got into video games during the ps2 era. snes and genesis: self explanitory. current gen, not deep enough into the games yet for me to enjoy it as much as i did the other ones. ps1 era: 'nuff said
Well, I'm a gamer since 1988. (Amstrad, Commodore, Amiga, 386), but my favorite period is a Dreamcast period - right before PS2 and Xbox.
I was impressed by the 3D when it comes first with PS1, saturn and N64 but ... it was just the beginning (poor number of polygons, big pixels, polygons' instability, etc...). For me, the dreamcast was a revolution in 3D era: sharp and stable textures, giant number of polygons (cfr shenmue and many other games), increased frame rates (for some games), ALREADY 480p games with the VGA cable (amazing: the wii is nothing compare to these graphics), etc ... Even now, the only old console I keep (and I'm still playing to) is the dreamcast. Try playing to soulcalibur or DOA 2 in 480p and you will have to admit that it was the most ever advanced system for a given period. But meanly because of the saturn, the dreamcast had not the success it deserved. Anyway, the game collection is huge enough to satisfy any tastes.
I liked the PS2 era the best. The reasons are: Fanboyism didn't seem as bad as this gen It was a major step up from the PS1 Amazing new types of games finally on consoles Graphics looked awesome It was cheaper
i think you are right that hte PS2 days was where games turned an ugly fanboy corner, everyhitng after the ps2 got ridiculous levels of fanboyism which is getting almost ridiculous for this current gen. i personally voted for the NES days, that was my real hardcore start in games, but i like the ps2 era as my second choice
I have some really great memories when I saw Defender playing on the Atari 2600, and I also remember spending hours playing the Binatone TV Game and that light gun. Later on it was Jet Set Willy on the Spectrum. That was very cool, but my longest playing sessions and best memories come from games like Civilisation and Uridium on the Amiga. Those were the days! Nowadays I like the games but just don't have the freedom to play as much as I could. Shame, because there are some great games around.
ps1/n64 were the most fun for me nothing could beat Goldleneye/mario kart multiplayer, and FF7, Mario 64, and ocarina of time the only games I got into during the SNES were Super Mario 3 and Zelda cuz I was like 8
I have to agree here Golden Eye is my favorate game of all time. Turok was pretty fun too and Ogre Battle 64 was way beyond its time. Lets not forget FF VII and GT 1 & 2.
Nice poll. I chose 16 bit era. Genesis / Mega Drive FTW!
SNES was by far the best. Mario RPG can be mentioned in the same breath as the all time greats like Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye, but it was done a gen sooner. Mega Max X was great, as well. Yoshi's Cookie got my mom into gaming for the first time! That besides all the great games like Mario Kart and Super Metroid that are considered greats, as well.
Damn I forgot Mega Man X in my rant. Good one. I cant even recall all the amazing games that have been out there. =P
Hmmm well thats a hard call... Do you go with NES Mario 1,2,3 DR Mario Bionic Commando Zelda SNES Donkey Kong Country Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 Mario Kart Mario World Pitfall Zelda Sega Golden Axe EWJ 1,2 Vectorman Doom Troopers Mortal Kombat 3 PS1 Tomb Raider FF7 FF9 N64 SM64 Wave Race Zelda OOT Golden Eye 1080 DreamCast Sonic Jet Set Radio Shenmue Soul Calibur PS2 God of War 1 & 2 Soul Calibur 2 & 3 GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas DMC1,3 Kingdom Hearts Gamecube Zelda Windwaker RE4 Xbox Halo 1,2 Ninja Gaiden Black GTA SA Now the current Gen. Those are most of my Fav games of all time. I owned all those systems and loved them all. I'm only 25 so dont know much pre NES. I had an intelivision but... Not much memory except some cool tank game. I currently own all 3 systems so making a chocie of which gen. I would have to say for nostalgia SNES. Those were a simpler days of "Jump on head and bad guy dies" Now its... Well pretty involved and I am only getting more and more sucked in as Innovation, Contention, Politics and Fanboyism are all huge and the market is becoming so mainstream its scary. Video games are the next evolution in the entertainment industry and becoming more and more a medium in our lives. In a previous time you would ask someone "Do you watch movies?" Now you ask "What type of movies do you like?" Video games are getting there too. If your a hardcore MMO player, A FPS fanatic or just a guy with a desk job who plays tetris and bejeweled then your a gamer. Its getting to the point of "What video games do you like?" anymore then "Do you play video games?" it's an exciting era right now and we are a part of this medium and its great.
Well put in every way! IM 27 so I hear you completely. Video games are main stream industry now and it is scary how things are getting, fanboyism and politics is rampant and annoying! I miss the "simpler days" like you say, play a game for fun, to brag ot your friend or to hang out. Now you need to worry about patches and downlads and leaderboards, stress inducing almost. Long live the dawn of games and scary is the hand of power that is next gen!
Earthworm Jim was sweet.Hey anyone remember Battle Toads for NES.
do we include all the old school titles of the wii and 360 arcade? A disagree with an question?
SNES Era (Super Metroid, Super Mario Land, Link to the Past, etc) was my favorite and the only era i still own all the games i bought during it. I do admit though that the nostalgia factor is what keeps it number one. Followed by last gen (Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube). It was the first era i owned all of the consoles. So many different varieties of games available to play make it a close second. Third was the NES era. It was a fun era but nothing really stands out in it like the SNES era other than Super Mario Bros 1,2,3 and Duckhunt. ([email protected] you laughing dog and Hammer Bros)!!
however best line up in history.... I dunno what full timeframe a "Line up" consists of. It's all subject to personal views. Maybe for the end of 2007 360 has a strong line up with Halo 3, ME and what not but 2008's line up for PS3 is just as strong if not stronger... As far as the past.... I could not say. Like I said. Can a line up be a whole year long? or a few months? a season? or what? Hard call really... The good thing is everyone has good exclusives and good games now and in the future. Great time to be a gamer. As long as you dont buy into fanboyism you'll be set (I admit I am guilty of this too). Just enjoy the now and the good games we all have ;-) p.s. I really like this article for some reason and the ideas behind it.
The 16 bit era is the most fun I've had. The SNES in its prime was amazing.
Earthworm Jim, Super Mario World 1&2, Zelda: LTTP, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, FF IV & VI, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Super Street Fighter II, Clay Fighters, Breat of Fire 1 & 2, Lufia 1 & 2, Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, & 3, Starfox. I'm sorry, there has yet to be a generation of systems that could match the quality the SNES had going for it.
I am going to pick 32 bit era with my systems of choice being PS1 and PC. With advancements in graphics and storage space. Story based gaming became more and more popular (ie MGS, Planescape Torment, Wing Commander 3)
PS2 without a doubt 7 years after and still beating 360 and PS3. ass...
the more and more fanboys that join this useless argument on which console is better, the less fun games become. soon gaming will no longer be a hobby, or a passtime, it'll be a job where the different factions fling dirt at each other. but if i had to choose, id say the PS1, and my pc from 1998 half life/counter strike till 2005 when 1.5 went to hell..
i totally agree with you now instead of what game you are getting its who's side are you on its rediculouse i don't think it was this bad back in the nes playstation era now its just gone to sh^ts from all the fantard factions i miss the good old days..... but on topic for me i would have to say the playstation2 era its basically what made gaming what it is today and what made me a gamer long live playstation!!! and great gaming!!!
Playstation 1 and N64 were competing with the Dreamcast. That little three-way battle gave birth to some of the greatest and most unique IPs ever to come along, viva la DC!
Since I never forget the old generations. All the previous "glory day" games are still around to play and all the new stuff is being added. So I never understand these polls from a gaming standpoint. From a player standpoint I probably spent the most time playing games in my high school years and into college before I had kids. So from a time played standpoint, i'd say the 16 and 32 bit gens took the most of my time. -CadDad
is my personal golden era risky woods cannon fodder beneath a steel sky zak mckraken future wars flashback Sensible Soccer dynablaster syndicate............. i could go on. to be objective though any console or computer you owned when your life was carefree will probably hold that golden era status. gaming is a part of my upbringing and life without gaming might be more productive but i dont care. its my vice
#1: NES/Super NES/Sega Genesis --Metroid, Zelda, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Brothers, Super Metroid, Super Mario Brothers 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, to name a very few. #2: Xbox/Xbox 360/Wii --Halo 1-2-3, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Oblivion, Call of Duty 1-2-3-4, Half-Life 2, Oddworld, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Xbox Live, to name another very, very few. #3: Atari/Intellivision/Coleco etc. --Where it all began.
i thought for sure NES/Sega Master System era would be up there in votes, but it is almost in dead last. No love for the original Mario and SOnic game, I thought those would be corner stones of gaming.
