Sony "Big Bang" Conference on Oct 12

Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you've been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a "Big Bang" press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It's truly a good time to be a buyer.

How come you were MIA on that news article a few weeks back that stated 360 ISN'T dead in europe but in fact IS doing better than the PS3!? OMGHI2U!!! Want proof? To be on topic, $399 will move the consoles but it might be too late to take anything but 3rd place this round. It, if anything, would help boost slagging BD sales. I know I'm tempted to get a PS3 for $399 not just for gaming (or lack thereof) but also for BD as I'm neutral on the format but am biased more towards HD DVD. Sony needed a pricedrop like this 6+ months ago. We'll see if it's too little too late. Both as a game console and as a BD player (THE BD player the whole BDA actually backed up), it isn't doing so hot...

I still find it amusing that PS3 sales are neck and neck with 360 sales at this time in its life cycle despite the PS3 not having any games (or so they say). With this price drop, the release of MGS4 and GT5 (and multi games like Assassin's Creed and DMC4), and increasing Blu-ray/HD demand, there will be a clear winner in a year or two. Spoiler: it's not the Defective Halo Box Mk.II.

The 360 and PS3 on a global basis are far from "neck and neck"... The PS3 stands at about 5M in hands of consumers and the 360 about 11M in hand to the consumer. If they do drop to $399, I suspect a big surge, but will it be a "gamer" surge or a "movie watcher" surge? I think Sony is making a mistake with this big a drop now. They should do it when the library is bigger in my opinion.

I think even Sony concedes that Xbox will win the US this round. PS3 will do slightly better in the rest of the world.

I mean, Xbox has a 5 million unit lead in the US and it’s still outpacing the PS3 in sales.. even before Halo 3 even hit the shelves. If Sony starts to catch up, MS will simply do another price cut.

the 2 biggest ammo x360 fanboys have been using so far is theps3 has no games and it's too expensive (which can be arguably true depending on your game taste).

but the ps3 has been selling on average about a third of the x360 numbers in america and almost the same amount worldwide and that's without any advertising or coherent marketing strategy.

every gamer i know in real life are just waiting for a price drop to get a ps3, the halo effect is gonna last a couple of month

that sony was just waiting for halo 3 to drop before they started doing anything. It seems that I'm hearing more about the upcoming games on this system more than anything else now. It's like they were waiting for all the hype to die down. Now they are starting to move. I really hope they can squeeze KZ2 in this christmas I know it's a long shot but I can atleast wish. R & C is another game that looks amazing along with Haze and Uncharted if the new Socom comes out I'll be overwhelmed. Seems like things are getting better and better.

Xbox price cut really wouldnt, since price isnt the reason they arent being bought. Neither is games for that matter though.

Sony mustve known the new model would be leaked sooner or later via FCC. Im thinking theyll announce their price drop+ sony AAA title that we havent thought of, atleast being released this early.(If it is a fully sony funded FFVII remake bundled, then even you xbox fans have to admit that it will be end of the line for Microsoft.)

Microsoft is able to buy its way into sales because of third-party software. If sony funds it (like msft did with ninja gaiden 2) then MSFT only weapon against the PS3 is taken away.

With all the negative media attention and the slow sales with fewer software titles than the cheaper opposition(down side of releasing last). However considering we all pretty much knew once the 60GB was phased out, the 80GB would drop to 500 and this would jst be a case of them releasing a more affordable sku. Hopefully with wifi i believe thats a huge sell.

I heartily disagree. The wifi is not very necessary at all. I usually have mine plugged in because it's just a faster connection.
Sony did claim at first that you'd be able to upgrade a 20GB to have the features of a 60GB (wifi and card readers). I have yet to hear confirmation of this, but if they do have a wifi addon, then it would make sense to ship the 40GB without wifi for a cheaper price. It's a nice feature, but many people don't have wireless in their homes, let alone want to play games over it.

WiFi is also used to support the PSP which helps PSP sales as well. Believe me they have this all figured out. I actually bought a PSP Slim just because it can be used with the PS3 as a pretty good MP3 player and the games are fairly interesting especially the Final Fantasy ones.

You have to remember that in the recent months, Sony went through some changes in their leadership over the PS3. Perhaps the changes we are seeing are based on another mans vision for success. Kutaragi had a different vision and now that vision is gone. In comes the new vision and success may seem more around the corner than it did for the company before. It's not a shock to see it if in fact there is a price drop and another SKU coming.

Look what happened when they announced the price drop on the 60gb models... That put Sony on top of Amazon and other internet sale sites for many days and even weeks.

The number 1 seller on Amazon is the game Halo 3 and so >>WAS<< the Xbox 360. Halo has some short shoelaces though since the 360 console is now back in third place.

Right after TGS I said I still thought there would be a price cut by the holiday season.And I know that this doesn't confirm the drop but I know Sony is not dumb.In the console market (since PS1) Sony has a good track record.Even if Oct. 12 doesn't introduce a price cut I still say price cut by holidays.A 40 gig model would be a better buy than the old 20 gig same for the 80 gig compared to the 60 gig.Sony should also tell people how the PS3's hardrive is a standard 2.5" HDD that can be easily upgraded.

If this is true, Sony is realizing that they can't keep letting the gap between the PS3 and 360 widen. I think Sony is afraid that more exclusives will jump ship because of the 360's install base, and the fact that the games attach rate for the 360 is much higher than the PS3. If you're a game developer, you can't ignore those facts.

@ #4: the PS3 sales are not neck and neck with the 360. They dominate the 360 in Japland, but considering the PS3 isn't selling all that well there it hasn't impacted the global sales figures all that much. In NA the 360 is dominating the PS3. In Europe it's close. The UK the 360 is surging ahead, but in the other big European markets I think the PS3 is ahead. My personal feeling is that anti-American feeling have a lot to do with it. Maybe with the Shrub gone (a.k.a. Bush) things will turn for the better for the 360 in Europe.

It be wise for Sony do the price drop they are decently good, but not great..They only sold 5 million in one year they need to do something to unsure that the sales will pick up..The holidays is just around the corner..The consumers is looking for the price cut and games..The Playstation 3 have plenty of exclusive by the end of this year. It have Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Folklore, Haze, Unreal Tournment, Eye of Judgement, Time Crisis 4, Folklore Gran Turismo, and etc. Next year we got even more games. In NA the 360 is dominating ..I don't know about Europe i think PS3 and 360 is neck to neck there..In japan the PS3 is winning..We will see next year if the PS3 can be on top again.

They really do need to clean out existing 60 gig stock. There is obviously still a good bit of 60 gig inventory out there as I still see that SKU in every store I go in that carries the PS3. I'm assuming they are hoping that by the time they announce the 40 gig with a price cut they will have just about cleared the channel of 60 gigs. If not, they are going to be in the same boat as the 360 -- 3 SKUs on the shelf -- 40, 60, and 80, each with a different price and different feature set. That doesn't exactly stick with Sony's stated desire to have ONE sku when they cut the 20 gigger...

That's why they didn't make any big announcements. Sure, everyone was disappointed in them, but really, any and all news from TGS lasted TWO DAYS after the conference and then HALO 3 took over the headlines.

Now that HALO 3 is out in the wild sony may be able to steal some of it's thunder (maybe a little,) but they didn't have a hope in hell of stealing the limelight during launch.

Its now obvious, that IF the 12th Oct. Announcement is the pricedrop to $399 for the entry model, that they had to wait until the $20 million worth of media hype and marketing Microsoft spilled all over the world was done. Now Halo 3 is yesterdays news, and the public looks for other interesting news, and mid Oct. is perfect timing for the X-mass season.

It would have been wrong from a business standpoint to waste such an important marketing weapon into the massive Halo3 marketing campaign. It would have been mostly ignored or swept under.

Ah, the power of competition. Hopefully this move pushes Microsoft to lower the price of the 360 to $250. Competition means that we, the consumer, win out in the end. Brand loyalty will only lead to inflated prices, poor hardware, and poor service. Support a free market and go against the monopoly of the gaming world. Say no to a one platform future. Honestly I think this goes deeper than a price cut for Sony. I wouldnt consider the price cut a "big bang" because it's expected. The only way this would be considered a big bang is if the price matches, or is lower than the 360.

But rumors and speculation are definately running rampant and with Sony announcing this "big bang" announcement, it coincides with a lot of things being mentioned right now in the industry

1. G4's HUGE announcement that got delayed
2. Bungie being released by Microsoft
3. GTA IV and/or MGS 4 being released this year
4. Final Fantasy VII remake announcement (which some think it's inevitable anyway)

It could be a number of things, but the price cut should be expected. And if the price cut is the big bang, I'm dissapointed. But once again, I believe it goes deeper than the price cut.

Honestly, I think one of Sony's major problems is the marketing campaign they have. I mean its pathetic! Very few commercials, very little hype for games and the console itself. Sony is relying too much on Japan. Sony, you need more commercials, and not the kind you've been showing recently. Show the consumer what Blu-Ray is, show them how important it is to the future. Show the consumer the power of the PS3 by showing some Killzone 2 or MGS4 footage. Show the consumer what they're paying for. The average American consumer sees the PS3 as, "an over-priced game thing!" They think they're paying for nothing but a game console. Sony, show them what the PS3 is, that it is more than just a game console. Advertise! ADVERTISE! THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO! You show the consumer that the PS3 will last in their household for 10 years or more, then they will feel 500-600 is a good price for it.

If Sony adds a 400 dollar PS3, plus better marketing, I believe the victory of the PS3 is inevitable.

The $399 PS3 will ensure an inevitable victory in the end. PS3 is a A/V media center instead of a game console such as Wii or Xbox 360. I would be tempted to buy a PS3 if they were cheaper in the UK as I have a 1080p TV and want a blu ray player. Ok, if you look, you can pick one up for £300 but thats for a second hand console. The packages at the moment are, quite frankly a good deal with bad games and worse blu ray disks. But I think that the chances of this announcement being a worldwide price cut being about as remote as the GTA 4 being exclusive and halo coming to PS3 rumours.

The article about Home being released in October is dated March 12, 2007! As most of us know, Sony officially delayed Home to Spring 2008 at TGS. Sorry, but it has nothing to do with Home being released.

Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, Lair, RFOM, Motorstorm... I bet you could have never have got that. Probably some of it but for sure not all of it...

Even with the huge library there are still very few games I wanna play... and looking at the line up I'm way more stoked for the PS3. I still play my 360 plenty and enjoy it but just... I seriously stand behind the fact that a game doesn't have to be AAA to be fun. Loco roco is fun on PSN and Carcassonne is the game I play most out of all my systems. Thats just a crappy XBL game that no one really knows about. No where near AAA but ZOMFG fun. Everyone knocks Lair. I enjoy it a lot. Its hard, challenging and decent story, replay is good and I have always been a HUGE factor 5 fan... HS fun and albeit short the replay value for me more then makes up for it... Then the beloved Halo3... I am thinking of returning it... I really dont feel its anywhere near as good as Bioshock or Gears. Those are 2 games you would have to pry from my cold dead hands... I feel let down as it didn't live up to the hype for me at all.... Notice how I say "For me" and "imo" all the time. This is not your view maybe but mine. I feel any "REAL GAMER" would appreciate every game for what it is. Halo 3 to me is just Halo 2 HD...

Point being AAA means very little to true gamers. If you were a true gamer you would own all 3 systems and see them for what they are. Grow up or go play in traffic. One or the other.
