Cliffy B: "The middle class game is dead"

"Middle class games" that fall between AAA and indie stools don't stand a chance in the current climate, so says Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski.

During his 'Rise of the Power Creative' presentation at the Games Developer's Conference in San Francisco today, Bleszinski explained that in the current cluttered market, middling titles that don't do enough to stand out are going to fail.

"I'm going to go on the record and say that I believe the middle class game is dead," he said, before drawing an analogy with the movie business.

He's right and that sucks.

Take a look at Enslaved's sales last year. It was critically successful, but not an AAA game and lacking a large marketing budget. It was ignored by the consumers.

I think part of it is that gamers are more knowledgeable of their purchases now.

Except for casual gamers, most people walk into their local game store already knowing exactly what they're going to buy - that latest Killzone, Halo, GTA, etc.

The days of browsing the shelves and picking something up because it sounds fun are gone. You buy what you know, and since most big games are from franchises it's compounded as you have a relative assurance of quality if you played the previous ones instead of taking a risk grabbing the no-name game off to the side that doesn't have the big posters covering the walls.

It makes it very hard for new studios to take off or get their game out there.

I think digital distribution is the solution to this however, as few digitally sold games (XBLA, PSN, Steam, App Store, etc) are actually marketed beyond reviews and provide the impulse buys needed to generate revenue for new / unknown IPs.

it was a piece of shit. Not because it had little marketing for it, just to get that cleared up;)

gamingdroid2843d ago

I kind of agree with you albeit in less harsh words.

I was interested due to the Journey to the West inspiration. However, when I tried the demo they didn't improve the controls one bit from Heavenly Sword, it was still as slow and laggy feeling as ever. Felt cumbersome and completely unresponsive.

It is a budget buy for me at $10-15 shipped to my door which I will consider playing some time after my other great games.

UltimateIdiot9112843d ago

I did not get Enslaved because I simply did not want to support such Devs. Gameplay is terrible especially the control basing on the demo. Story, I cannot comment because I have not play the game.

Not only that but after all they had to say and still yet to admit their own fault shows me they have little to no humility. Also, their DMC design does not look promising to me at all.

All and all, there are many developers out there who deserves money than NT. I do buy middle class game but that really depends on how middle class game is define.

If Valkyria Chronicles is one, then I got that Day 1. If Demon Soul is another, I also got that Day 1.

DigitalAnalog2842d ago (Edited 2842d ago )

I'll cut the long story short:

Had NT kept their mouth shut regarding sales on HS and the constant comparisons with ND then I can assure you, it would've sold a lot more decently.

middle class like Bulletstorm and Unreal Tournament?

undercovrr2843d ago

Unreal Tournament is middle class? LOL what planet are you from. The original UT, and UT2004 were one of the best shooters to date and helped create twitch FPS games like COD Modern Warfare.

The funny part is that you haven't even played those games or you won't be making that comment.

zak94ma2843d ago

its funny to to believe that some kind of suckers like him is actually designing games and thinking he is some kind of genus .
Cliffy bi-lesinskly GOW series is the worst series ever.

Inside_out2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

. he's saying that people want value for their hard earned ( O_o ) this a secret somewhere???

I love Bulletstorm, Bulletstorm is made by a dev that Epic bought out called People Can Fly. The title is about as entertaining a title as you are going to find in the FPS category...but where's the Multi-player versus mode??? The haters have said exactly what Cliff is preaching's a rental because of a lack of adversarial multi-player component.

Yes, it does come with a Horde/Firefight type of co-op mode and that does gray the arguement some what but in this day and age, I believe that a versus multi-player is near critical for sucess in the fps genre...especially on XBL where most if not all the hardcore gamers, the demographic that this game caters to, have a gold membership and friends list. If you want COD is absolutely critical.

Alan Wake ( fantastic game btw ) while heavily pirated a confirmed 1.14 million times and has sold 850,000+ copies, would of done much better with some sort of additional multi-player component. While in the TPS adventure category, a co-op horde/firefight type of campaign play through would of helped convince more XBL heavy gamers to take a chance on the title.

Some games sell well with nothing more than a single player campaign but that number is getting smaller and smaller.

LOGICWINS2843d ago

Not every shooter NEEDS a multplayer mode. I guess that means you missed out on of the best games this generation.

BLACKBOIJONES2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

Cliffy should STFU...He cant speak for us consumers. Some of us buy games that is not based on hype and big budgets.

Neckbear2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

"Some of us" is an astonishing minority, mind you.

Believe it or not, he's right.

I mean, have you seen kids calling games "trash" because they have an score of, say, 7 or so?

That's basically a perfect example. Sure, there are niché companies with their fanbase, but...that's about it.

HarryMonogenis2843d ago

"for us consumers"

Believe it or not, either can someone such as yourself. He's got some very good points and some of the fanboys on this site (you being one of them) are either in denial over it or just THAT one-sided.

Krakn3Dfx2843d ago

Yeah, that Cliffy B, he knows...things.

Also, still an asshole.

Krakn3Dfx2843d ago

I'm alright with the Agrees/Disagrees being split down the middle. Means I've 50/50 change of being right. I'm comfortable with those odds.

MGRogue20172843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

stfu dude..
