BladeRunner one of the most influential and revered sci-fi films of all time could have a new game developed for it, and amazingly a movie prequel and sequel could be on the cards.
Days Gone developer appears to be moving well outside its comfort zone in order to join Sony's ongoing foray into live-service games.
Admin note: Updated this to rumor. Job listings can be a good indicator, but let's remember nothing is final until officially announced. ~Christopher
This game will determine the fate of Sony Bend. Not looking to good if it's a live service game.
Days gone is an amazing game which I believe was unfairly criticized for things a lot of other games gets a pass for. The game is very good but had a few bugs on launch that was quickly patched the day of release. There are so many games that took months to iron out most of the bugs that are highly praised so I can understand if the dev team decides to go a different route.
It's a tricky thing to try to make a sequel of a game because I've seen sequels improve a lot over the first game with new worlds and mechanics and get lower review scores while other games sequel have the same world with minor changes but get better review scores. Whatever the days gone developers are making I believe will be a good game because I know they are a good game studio.
Helldivers 2 proves you can make fun live service games that don't feel like they're nickle and diming you. I am optimistic
No, Sony is not allowed to have LS. Everyone else yes, but Sony is not allowed. We wont allow it.
Why? It's obvious at this point of what not to do when making a live service game. Plus you can see from Helldivers 2 that fun games can be made that don't feel like Microtransactions are weighing you or the game down.
For every helldivers 2 there are so many that aren’t good. Let’s not assume every sony live service game is gonna be helldivers 2.
To be fair, while Helldivers 2 has been great and quite successful, its only been out for a month and a half.
Its success from a launch standpoint has already been proven, but whether it succeeds as a Live Service game (in particular as one to be used as a model for others) is not really something we know yet.
The whole point of devs and publishers going for live service is the consistent revenue they provide over several years, not just 1-2 months
It's been obvious for years though. That hasn't stopped dozens of live service games crashing and burning on release for making the same mistakes again and again. This industry doesn't learn.
Why is it automatically bad? Maybe its a good game. I reserve my judgement until we see it.
Unless it is a hit like Helldivers ||, the studio will not survive unfortunately.
That is a lie. They can make a single player that players would claim they want, but would not support. They can make a good live service game like Helldivers 2. As long the game is good and the mtx are not bad, the game will do well. Their last game was a single-player game, yet most only got the game when it was heavily discounted.
Quite unfortunate.
Sony really should not be asking their long time studios to be making these games. Haven, Bungie, fine. Not Bend.
"Not looking to good if it's a live service game."
It´s Amazing news!
It could be a spiritual successor to Syphon Filter with multiplayer/co-op mechanics.
Bring it on, Bend!
I'm going to say this as someone who really enjoyed Days Gone
Why would you go and create an open world, multiplayer game with live service elements if you're previous game which was only a single player title came out flawed?
Wouldn't you want to create a new single player game to refine and fix your last mistakes to master what you were going for the first time before jumping into uncharted territories with online, multiplayer and live service which is a completely different beast entirely.
I can't be the only who thinks this right?
Just seems like your setting yourself up for failure in my opinion, you're giving yourself and your team bigger challenges to overcome in an already oversaturated market, a market where live service games made by people who are used to online and multiplayer are even struggling themselves.
It might be good, who knows, but at the moment it just seems they are biting off more than they can chew.
Isarai is completely right. bend already had wanted to do the sequel which is why the one guy stepped down from their studio because he didn't get to. Their marching orders were to do this from Sony.
Phoenix
That doesn't take away from the fact that when this LS fails , that Bend will be dismantled whether Ryan gave the "marching orders" or not.
Though you are right like Isarai said sony wanted 12 live service games asap they have no say in the matter just work for there over lords like isomiac in there marvel slave factory.
honestly having to make marvel games isn't so bad, there's a diverse lineup of characters to choose from. what's really bad about it is that they have to consult with sweet baby inc about political crap to add to their games or take away from it
@pho
Its not making marvel games its about the leak were even into mid ps6 we wil still be getting spiderman/wolverine from a dev studio that once did infamous and of course the ratchet games.
But no everyday they go to work on 2 ips for the next 8+years
Yup as others mentioned, not up to them.
My only hope now is for Bend to hold on & make it to a time & state that will allow them to properly start working on Days Gone 2.
They just see their competitors profits and want to replicate. They ask all these studios to do something they've never done before and the results are exactly as you would expect (lacking). This has been happening for a decade in the industry. Dice and Battlefront/Battlefield are the best example.
I full expect to see this game announced at SGF.
It's definitely not Days Gone 2 it's a new LS IP. Hope it looks and plays good.
Yup I feel the same. I am never buying into LS crap, no matter how good the game is supposed to be.
If they drop it at 39.99 and a progression system that isn't entirely bogged down by MTX like Helldivers 2 they could have something in general moving forward. However I fell like HD2 may just be an exception to the rule.
You knew for a long time that Days Gone 2 wasn´t coming.
Your outrage makes no sense.
Even if it is, my question is who is going to play all these live service games constantly? Doesn't matter if they are all Helldivers 2 quality, there is only so much time and people tend to dedicate themselves to maybe a couple of service games at a time ( if that ).
Well...yes. however, once you're more or less topped off on one you really only go back for the updates. Or in some cases even once a season starts.
Couldn't care less if it was, I wouldn't be buying it either way. LS is an instant deal breaker for me.
"Couldn't care less if it was, I wouldn't be buying it either way. LS is an instant deal breaker for me."
And Sony couldn´t care less about you or your feelings.
That’s the thing. Why does Helldivers 2 get praised but then this has everyone doomin’ and gloomin’? If we start getting GaaS as a majority of releases people don’t have anyone to blame but themselves for opening this door. I hope most of these GaaS games fail so we can get back to traditional games.
I always ask this question: Why do publishers choose to develop a game with a GaaS design vs just making a traditional game? There’s only one answer and it’s all centered around continual monetization with a dev budget spread thin over many years.
"If we start getting GaaS as a majority of releases people don’t have anyone to blame but themselves for opening this door. I hope most of these GaaS games fail so we can get back to traditional games."
In Sony's case if these LS games fail, major lay offs, studio down sizes and even possible studios shut downs (worse case)
I said this already but if these LS games fail it won't be a glamorous as going back to what they do best. There will be casualties and slow production, shifts and changes. If they succeed, they can make traditional SP games while supporting the LS game. That's the best case scenario.
Buy Bends new game if it looks good, plays good and fun. If it doesn't then don't buy it, no need to force yourself for some agenda.
I think Bends game is releasing next year tbh. I think it's closer than we think.
History says probably not. Almost every live service game fails. Realistically if HD2 is successful the other games likely won't be. Traditionally people dont jump from live service to live service. They find one game they really click with and invest their time and/or money into that.
I enjoyed Days Gone and was really hoping on a sequel. But making an LS game nah I am good.
They tried to make a classic Sony high level game but failed. Days Gone was not to the level Sony demand on so many points so I understand Sony not letting them make a second one or even a new single player. Now they can make up for it with this smaller Live service game and if that makes it Big Maybe then they can make another Big AAA single player game.
I really like Sonys High level of standard to secure the games are top sellers.
from what i could tell days gone got targeted by political media who had reviews saying how they didn't like the white biker dude. then the game which ran so poorly and got marked down was fixed within a day after being sold which unfortunately wasn't fast enough to fix the damage. all in all it was actually a good game. it also sold well but sony cares more about a pedigree of high review scores sometimes than the actual sales numbers.
It had nothing to do with a white dude or anything like that silly stuff. But it was a little weird playing as a Biker dude from a Biker gang. Just silly. The Bike was fine and ran perfectly. Really good bike gameplay.
It was the story that was off and dull The world felt empty other then the really fun hords. Other then that the game really had nothing. Very obvious it was Bends first open world game. The game lacked character.
It sold ok but not Great as Sony other Big AAA games does. Sony care alot about game scores yes and that is exactly why they are the best at it.
Had 0 to do with a white guy. That is just a stupid thing some people say. Gamers are to blame not the media. Game might have sold around 8M, but I recall the dev saying ‘don’t complain if there’s no sequel if you didn’t buy it full price. In order words, most gamers refused to actually buy the game at full price for whatever reason, got it when it was heavily discounted. Now most are complaining the studio isn't doing a sequel. If you didn't think the game was good enough at full price, why should the studio make a new one?
Days Gone was such a good game. Maybe even one of the best of the generation. I hold my hands up and admit I slammed it on release - I can’t even remember why now. So I share the responsibility of not seeing a sequel. A real shame. The devs deserved better.
This is so stupid
Wtf are you thinking guys and Sony really needs better management
They already said it was a multiplayer game many months ago so that made it fairly clear it was love service. The Days Gone 2 pitch was also multiplayer so either way it would have been live service
If this was before Helldivers 2 I'd be "fml and these live service games", but now that I see that companies can actually make a Live service game that doesn't feel gross I won't instantly right this one off. Only time can tell how this one will go.
They could be sneaky and make Syphon Filter. CBDC( yellow hazmat suit guys) were in Days Gone and Syphon Filter. That could appease both Days Gone fans and the LS, by making a MP Syphon Filter with hints leading into Days Gone.
Days Gone Studio's new IP won't see a sale from me then.
I don't care how good they are, I'm not buying into live service games. I thought Helldivers 2 looked pretty great in the early trailers, but it being live service turned me off immediately. It's a definite deal breaker for me.
Days Gone was one of the best games I played. Too bad a sequel is no longer on the cards.
Ah man, well I guess their run is over then. GaaS titles seem to be the final death rattle for formerly awesome studios these days.
Damn shame. Gaming does not need another "live service" games that falls apart within the first year.
That hurts me. Days gone was so good. I’d give anything if Sony would have green lit a sequel
Congratulations Sony Bell end. I have absolutely zero interest in your live service sh*tty title. Days Gone 2 would have been a day one title.
Days gone was mediocre at best, looks like they are lowering that bar even further. Go bend.
Interesting that they pitched a open world Resistance game. But I would rather have INSOMNIAC work on a new Resistance game .
Naughty dog, insomniac canceling their online titles should of been a sign for Sony bend to not go into that territory of dead on arrival titles, look at suicide squad 🤦🏾 smh these devs do not think of their fans nowadays smh days gone will always be one of my most favorite post apocalyptic titles, these mfs must not be the same sony bend staff from 2019 and back cause ain no way they would do a idiot move like this yo
If it was a live service based on the days gone universe. That could be interesting. But it's hard to do a good live service game
There is such a stigma with live service that even when a good studio is working on one people already have their minds set that it'll be bad. With that said, this might kill the studio and that's not good at all so I hope they make a good game.
Live service games are a-ok according to fanboys on this site, so why not? Now I see why they increased the price of PS Plus.
What a tragedy and waste of talent. 989 Studios, people. Syphon Filter, Uncharted: Goldyn Abyss, Days Gone..... What a sad day.......
What a shame, Instead of continue Days Gone story after the cliffhanger ending In the first. Sony rather make Bend do pointless live service game instead. Live service game hardly ever successful
Are you also tired of video game reboots, remakes, and reimaginings?
A new rumor suggests the next Xbox console is currently being tested by developers in South Korea.
If true, hopefully a fully fledged next gen console and not some unnecessary mid gen refresh system.
It could be that rumored Xbox portable, who knows
Next gen would make sense. They said they'd talk about new hardware at the end of this year, and Xbox usually starts talking about next gen systems 2 years before they release. Late 2026 would make sense for next gen. Though it also seems a bit early for next gen dev kits to be going out.
Next gen wouldn't make any sense right now. They still have 1st party to release in the next few years. If they announce their next console at the end of the year that would do them harm more harm for their console. The console barely sells as is anyway. People would just wait off until the NEXT console. That's right, they'll have you playing the waiting game again.
If it does have anything to do with NextGen, Sony could have forced their hand by making the ps5 pro so powerful, with it said to be at over 33 teraflops and up to 4x the ray tracing performance, along with AI-powered upscaling that works on all games without patches required, according to Moore's Law is Dead, who is a very reliable source (and he also leaked photos of the internal documents confirming this).
What doesn't make sense is South Korea, why only there?
MS is talking next gen because they already released 2 different SKUs, they cannot release a 3rd SKU because the cost of optimizing every game for 3 different consoles would be prohibitively high. MS essentially will abandon current gen xbox owners because otherwise they dont have any way to respond to PS5 PRO.
MS plans really backfired on them this gen.
Next gen this early? People just bought their consoles. What about people with the current gen consoles? Will MS support the series S? Or just abandon them?
@StormSnooper
What do you mean "this early"? They're just talking about the hardware at the end of the year, not releasing it. It wouldn't come out until holiday 2026. Personally I'd prefer waiting until holiday 2027 as we've barely had any games that really take advantage of the current consoles. But 6 years is pretty standard for a generation.
That's the million dollar question Microsoft seem to indicate they want to start the next generation off early while PS is seemingly going for a refresh and next gen system in 2028.
However if they start the generation off say next year while only having the xsx on the market for 5 years consumers will start to question the lack of dedication to the systems.
A 5 year console cycle hasn't been relevant since the PS1 era and we've barely seen any convincing software that really shows the need for the current generation as is.
I feel like they need to wait until 2028 at least abs take PS on head on again
What would a fully fledged next gen console be though. The power creep is only high enough in 2024 to make a 'pro' type increase unless they make it super expensive. And given not as many are interested in the full powered Series X as it is. Who's buying it?
It wouldn't be releasing in 2024. This is just a dev kit, they're always different from the final hardware.
Designed now, yes, but the final hardware isn't available now. They'd have a general idea of what they're targeting but they'd still be working with AMD to build custom chips using upcoming architecture, not currently available chips. This is how every generation works.
"MS already abandoning the generation. That is how bad they are doing."
The only one "abandoning" the generation is Sony which barely scratched the surface with the PS5. So far there´s not a single first party game that pushed the hardware closer to its limits with true next gen games.
All its have to show from first party so far, is remakes, remasters, re-releases and cross-generation games.
The worst part of it all is that apparently, even the PS5 Pro will be released without a single first party game to show why that thing is needed in the first place.
That´s why I´m happy Xbox ditched the idea of another mid gen refresh Xbox, and will continue to focus on both SX and SS for the foreseeable future.
Hah that is a hilarious response.
Look at MS leaving the generation halfway in the middle. At least in prior generations they would just give up, now they are abandoning their consumers too! like “sorry you bought what we sold you, but we gotta move on now, byyyeee”
While I can understand the annoyance with a mid gen refresh considering the severe lack of first party support on this console gen I'd argue it's very necessary considering most games still don't hit native 4k 60 on console.
The PS5 Pro won´t achieve native 4k 60fps for most games either!
That´s why it´s pointless.
Same CPU in Pro, so the expectation is that it'll just be a res boost unfortunately.
According to Obscure, a mid-upgrade is “unnecessary” but a whole new generation is just dandy. My question is, why is that? I mean at least with a mid-gen upgrade gamers aren’t being left behind. If its too early for a mid-gen, then why is it not too early for a new gen? lol sorry I have to laugh.
another console for no one to buy, the series is tracking lower than the xbox one, buy your games and support them
@Obscure
Sooo a mid-gen upgrade is too early and “unnecessary”, but a whole new gen that leaves gamers behind is good?
A mid gen console releasing this year using the same CPU, vs a next gen console with all new hardware launching more than two years from now. Mid gen is pointless because without a significant CPU upgrade games will still struggle with performance. A CPU overclock isn't remotely enough.
The biggest obstacle regarding performance this gen is the CPU, this is what causes so many games to have hitching, stuttering, sudden fps drops, 30fps, etc. A faster GPU cannot alleviate these issues, games won't just magically be 4K60fps with raytracing. That's not how it works.
Each frame has to be processed by the CPU before being handed off to the GPU. So a game can ultimately only perform as fast as the CPU can feed the GPU. This is why consoles focusing so heavily on GPU power is a problem, after the first couple years when you start really pushing the GPU the CPU becomes a bottleneck. We need more balanced consoles next gen.
@porkchop
fps, raytracing, etc is all gpu stuff. So when they do gpu tests, they use the exact system but use different gpus, the results are huge if you look at the top vs bottom. CPU will give you a higher ceiling but all graphics stuff is gpu work. FPS is gpu.(you plug gfx card into monitor)
"All games and cards are tested with the drivers listed above—no performance results were recycled between test systems. Only this exact system with exactly the same configuration is used for all results in this review."
Thats from rtx470 super ex review, rx5700xt does 44% compared to rtx470super ex 100% at 2560x1440 resolution. For games gpu is the best upgrade.
https://www.techpowerup.com...
@S2Killinit
"Sooo a mid-gen upgrade is too early and “unnecessary”, but a whole new gen that leaves gamers behind is good?"
Have you paid attention to what I´d actually said?
I said that I rather MS to stick with the SX and SS for the foreseeable future!
And what you mean by "leaving gamers behind"?
It´s been 4 years and so far the PS5 don´t have a single true next gen first party game which pushes the console to its limits and, yet, Sony already have a pointless mid gen refresh console ready to launch which according to DF themselves it´s nothing but a disappointment as far CPU performance is concerned.
So why in the hell would I want MS to follow the same route?!
I rather have a full next gen Xbox console released by 2026-2027 rather than a worthless Xbox Series XX to be released this year.
A new generation this early?? How is that a good thing??.. at least give us an upgrade. Some people barely bought their current gen consoles….
Series x only came out 3 years and four months ago, talking about a "fully fledged next gen console" is just as unnecessary right now. Better hope not, an xbox portable would fail miserably.
Yeah its wayyy too early for a next gen. People were even saying its too early for a mid-gen upgrade, let alone a new generation. And what happens to all the current xbox gamers? Leave them behind?
At one time MS said that the one x/ps4 pro model would be the standard going forward. If theyre testing something new, its safe to say its a mid-gen upgrade. They’ll probably have another “Series-letter” name too. Callin it
Could be the refresh console perhaps? I doubt it'll be the new console. Might be the portable rumored device.
Regardless the fact we're talking about new hardware already is absolutely pathetic. Barely any current gen stuff out and the stuff that is out or coming is at 30 fps or doesn't, doesn't look current gen and what have you.
All we're doing is chasing power and not creating the games to harness said power.
Worse generation so far easily.
I have a hypothesis about the rush to move to next gen:
They want to really bake in AI integration in some way. How exactly? No idea, but perhaps new hardware would expedite a lot of development and reduce needed labour. Something they can't do with current hardware, perhaps.
I don't really know, but I reckon we'll get a good sense of it once we learn about the actual features of a new Xbox/Playstation.
Above you said it makes no sense but these days a lot of things make no sense to some people. Ps portal, mid gen refresh doesnt make any sense either to some. Another thing is the switch came out earlier because the wiiu flopped. Sense xbox aint doing so well dont it make sense to start fresh on the next system and get the jump like the 360. Overall we don't know nothing.
The reason it would be unusual is because releasing in, say, the next two years would really restrict the technology it could implement. For example, they'd maybe get Zen 4 with FSR3 instead of waiting a bit. Moreover, if they intend to live up to the claims of it having the most significant leap, they can certainly do that, but the price is likely to be harder to stomach.
Frankly, I wouldn't recommend getting the jump on the competition too early. Xbox 360 was a phenomenal console in its early years, but it was also God awful because it was absolute garbage quality.
Releasing too early relative to competition is a dangerous bet, especially for a company like Microsoft given their history.
It WOULD help xbox’s image not to release next to PlayStation day and date. That way numbers can be played with. (i.e. “we are best selling console”)
The only thing that makes me think this crazy news might be true is that MS already released two SKUs. If rumors are true that we will be getting a second SKU PlayStation (PS5PRO), then i dont think MS can release a third SKU as costs would be prohibitive for developing games for 3 separate SKUs that are so far apart in performance.
Solution: next gen xbox to leave some consoles out in those instances where developer can’t justify the cost.
This is bad news for xbox gamers indeed.
"Could be the refresh console perhaps?"
The Series X one, yeah. That was my thought, but why would it need a dev kit? They're changing something. Maybe it's just some minor bump like the One S last gen.
It was reliably leaked just a month ago that MS hadn't signed contracts for next gen till literally weeks ago- the same leakers that correctly leaked that hi fi rush and pentiment and sea of thieves were going to ps5. So this is very very very unlikely- if not impossible. Also it's way too early....
Tell us oh great timeline masta… what speed should a shady trillion dollar company move at to compete with their “non rival” rival?
new devkits to make is easier to bring xbox exclusive games to the PS5
There are no more "generations" as there have been in the past. Even if they rename the console it's just a newer version as all old games will still work, maybe better performance.
Series X hasn't even outsold the Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, or TurboGrafx 16. Oh well, on to new hardware.
I could see them releasing a "pro" version but a full blown next gen release would be way too soon wtf.
The same people complaining about buying a new next gen console after 5 years are usually the same people who upgrade $1500 phones every year or two and tell people why they should upgrade and not use 5-year-old phones because they are so out of date.
Makes no sense for people to be happy to upgrade some things every 2 years and then complain about new consoles every 5 - 6 years.
Its absolutely not next gen.
Most likely the all digital xsx.
If we're lucky its a portable.
Im betting its the all digital one we have all heard about, with slightly better wifi and more storage....im hoping for a proper upgrade but i doubt it will be that.
If I had to guess. I'd guess a controller handheld. You can play game directly off it but also use as a premium controller to play off the console with more features the regular controller don't have. It's definitely not a console. Next gen is coming no earlier than 2026, 2027 most likely based off Phil's words
Game, maybe... even though Snatcher pretty much covered that area.
Sequel and prequel? Ugh... leave it alone.
