Epic to show new Unreal Engine 3 updates at GDC, raises UDK royalty-free threshold to $50K

Next week, Epic Games will once again premiere the latest build of Unreal Engine 3 at GDC, a showing-off that's become pretty much tradition for the North Carolina-based studio. In its announcement, Epic promises behind-closed-doors demonstrations of the new tech every half-hour during the conference for "licensees, partners, prospective customers and the media."

Additionally, Epic plans to hold free training sessions for Unreal Engine 3 licensees, covering topics such as "content creation best practices" and "rapid prototyping with Unreal Kismet." Making your Unreal characters look like they have cars strapped to their torsos apparently won't be covered.

In a separate announcement, Epic notified UDK licensees that the royalty-free threshhold has been raised tenfold from $5,000 to $50,000 -- meaning Unreal developers don't pay royalities to Epic on the first $50K in (wholesale) revenue generated from their UDK-built games. That's pretty epic.

The story is too old to be commented.

That's actually pretty cool of them to do that. This engine better have big upgrades because there are many game engines that trump UE3. Frostbite 2.0, Sony 1st party engines, Insomniac engine, COD2 engine (just kidding :P)

Insomniac engine?? AHAHAH lmaoooo
GTFO $ony troll!
Gears of War 3 looks absolutely jaw-dropping using the latest build of Unreal Engine 3 (which harnesses the power of Direct X). Resistance 3 is shit in comparison.

@lochdoun "Insomniac engine?? AHAHAH lmaoooo"
Yes the Insomniac engine, have you not seen Resistance 3.

I've seen it, and it looks about average.

The Unreal 3 Engine is crap even with updates.

Insomniac's engine is actually really powerful troll. Judging by your avatar I should be the one laughing because that game looks like a cartoon.

GrumpyVeteran2702d ago

Yeah the UE3 engine is getting a bit old, admittedly.

Definitely needs a bit of an upgrade.

Epic has been working on the Unreal Engine 4 for awhile now. They said its going to be ready in 2012, i wonder how thats going to look. Hopefully its a giant leap forward.

FrigidDARKNESS2702d ago

this is the second update for the engine as of now its called UE3.5 which powers BulletStorm and GEOW 3....check out the differences from Gears 1 and 2 and compare it to Gears 3 and Bulletstorm. Definitely excited about the unveiling of the new engine.

@the pro Sony folks we've seen RE3 it doesn't look near as good as KZ3 BulletStorm and Rage.

NaiNaiNai2702d ago

Umm can we just make a new UE?

you know, one that runs smoother, on all systems.

humbleopinion2702d ago

Bulletstorm, Arkham City, Gears 3, Mass Effect 3, The new Mortal Kombat...
It's already 2011 and it seems that Epic are still at the top of their game. The unreal engine keeps iterating and improving, and new titles running with the latest version all seem amazing from previews - easily competing with the best looking games on the market.

Kudos to Epic for raising the royalties threshold to 50K. 5K was too low, but if now indie devs know that they can coup up to 50,000$ or their development costs without the need to pay for the engine usage - it will be a very good incentive for them.

Its a great engine and it scales very nicely. The update actually is quite the jump over the previous Unreal 3 engine updates.
You can tell right away comparing it.
