Dean Takahashi's $800 Halo 3 Schwag Bag

This is perhaps the schwag bag to end all schwag bags…

Game journo Dean Takahashi with The San Jose Mercury News showed off his big $800-plus bag of Halo 3 propaganda sent to him by Microsoft.

He's sending back the free stuff, which he called "nothing less than a bribe to try to get me to be favorably inclined to accepting the idea that Halo 3 is 'the entertainment event of the year.'"

It looks as though Microsoft sent him all the different types of merchandise made available to the public. As a reviewer, you may want to talk about whats out there and their differences. It all makes for an honest review.

HeartlesskizZ4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

you right about the part of sending it back but giving a game a bad review just because is not to you appeal thats where you wrong.

like a game or not you should Review it by facts and the quality of the game, hype dont mean automatically the game is good. this goes especially to the fanboys in IGN and 1UP

sticky doja4097d ago

I doubt it very seriously. I definatly would not send all that stuff back. The guy just needs to write the review he wants to write, reguardless of if he gets free stuff.

Lets take a vote on what's more shady:

Sending a big bag of goodies along with your game to the reviewers.

Sending a "Reviewer's Guide" along with the game telling them that if they think the controls suck they're just "doing it wrong"

I'm not taking either side, I'd honestly like to know what people think.

EDIT: I ask for opinions and get a bunch of disagrees? I know you guys aren't used to that, I'll go back to how people normally talk on this site, you know, TELLING YOU what you should think. Sorry to pull a fast one on you guys.

BlazinEurasian4097d ago

compensation beforehand is more suspicious than a book after.

Mu5afir4097d ago

The "reviewers guide" you are referring to is nothing more then instructions on using the SixAxis controller. As for Microsoft, I didn't realize you needed a spartan helmet, a limited edition Xbox 360 and an extra controller just to play Halo 3. It seems Halo fans are being jipped from experiencing the real game.

Seraphim4097d ago

from my understanding a lot of games actually come w/ a reviewers guide. So that's nothing new, despite Lair being the big criticized game for doing it.

As for sending a duffel bag full of gOOdies. Well that is borderline bribery in some sense, I guess. I mean you'd like to think that MS sent this out to reviewers as a token of gratitude. Or possibly so that reviewers take the time to also mention the additional Halo 3 stuff available. But just like anything else in the world we live in there's most likely another motive to providing reviewers with such a potent bag of goodies. Especially a source such as the San Jose Times. I can see IGN, Gamestop, and other gaming outlets getting the Legendary Edition and maybe some swag but San Jose Times? And even then I don't see the reason to toss in a Halo 3 360, headset, both controllers, and whatever else was bundled in the duffel bag. It is questionable imo, and if nothing else is definitely excessive...

KingME4096d ago

This is a normal marketing procedure. Every merchandising company out there does this. Sony and Nintendo are no different, If you don't believe that, then you're much bigger idiots they I had previously given you credit for.

I think this guy is a moron for bringing it to the public's attention. As his opinion of a games that has already sold millions is not that important to Microsoft. The fact that he said he's going to send it back will actually backfire on him more than he knows. If I were microsoft, in the future he would get nothing from me, if he wants to review a game of mine, he would have to buy it himself.

Just another publicity stunt by a lonely man.

weird. I mean i enjoyed the game, but i would think the average would be a 9 or 8.5.

Violater4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

How you like my defensive skillzzzz in Wowhawk, off topic i know.
Anyway I think the older reviewer sounded a bit biased from the get go so I would take all he says with a pinch of salt.
The other guy that actually played the game seems fair.
About sending them shwag its a part of the industry MS just has the funds to take it that much further.
Ok these dudes are full of sh!t.
Fanboys I don't care which side you are on you don't deserve to be journalists.

Mu5afir4097d ago

Part of the industry? What other game got a 800 duffel bag filled with goodies for reviewers? I have to know, I might become a reviewer myself if the perks are as good as you say they are.

Violater4097d ago

Like i said, they all get a little free stuff from everyone.
MS just went above and beyond here.

Seraphim4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

yeah, 10 out of 10 is a bit absurd unless you're a Halo fanboy. As gaming journalists they don't/shouldn't have the luxury of overrating a game because of their own personal interest. On no level, from a professional standpoint should any reviewer given Halo 10 out of 10. I can see 8-9.5 and anything under or over is simply unnecessary...

Certainly a solid game, but in no way is it perfect or great; at least not imo. Then again, simply based off it being an instant Classic often merits giving a game a 10 out of 10 imo. But that's from a personal opinion/standpoint.

Give me a break! If you play the game, you will know it's a 9 or 10 ... easy.

Greysturm4097d ago

its not 10 out of 10 at least not like bioshock, this is a good game but going past 9 is getting into the hype my average would be 8.5

darx4097d ago

I'd say an easy 9 for HALO 3. Where GOW was about an eight, wasn't blown away like some, except for the grafix of course.

HeartlesskizZ4097d ago (Edited 4097d ago )

In my opinion Halo 3 was not bad at all, it deliver and is sure a fun game probably the most fun right now, but reviews did got a bit way to base on the hype yet fanboism.

the game deserves a nice 9.5 or 9 but not a perfect 10. no game have yet been perfect no matter how much we love it.

Maybe GTA4 and NG:Sigma 2 will be the first to break that who knows.

Edit: I forgot to mention God of War 3 =)
