Analysis: Kinect Continues U.S. Xbox Momentum In January

As part of our monthly NPD U.S. video game retail sales analysis, Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews looks at continued momentum for Kinect and Xbox 360, with an estimated Kinect installed base approaching 3 million and 1.2 million standalone copies of Harmonix's Dance Central sold to date.

A year ago when Microsoft's Kinect was known as Project Natal, we were dubious about the system's value to the Xbox 360 market. At the time we wrote that we doubted that “Microsoft's Project Natal will actually lift and sustain the platform significantly.”

While three months is still early in the game, there is no question in our minds that Microsoft has done exceptionally well convincing consumers of the value of the Xbox 360 Kinect platform.

great for the US but its not helping the 360 worldwide at all. And there are no good games for it. Its selling on hype and casuals alone. Also at the expense of real 360 exclusives.

selling well in the largest videogame market in the world isnt helping the 360 worldwide????

I've wondered why people don't concentrate on NPD for Europe and Japan.

Solidus187-SCMilk2767d ago

NPD covers north america ONLY, not europe or Japan. Are you really that dense?

DigitalRaptor2767d ago

My bad.

Although, I must have misread the information in this link:

Um. . . Huh?

Solidus187-SCMilk2767d ago

Well that link says that they have offices in other parts of the world, that doesnt mean that they track video game sales in those places. As far as videogames are concerned, NPD deals with north America only.

Japan and europe have different places report on their sales.

candystop2767d ago

digital raptor, that was dumb lol

DigitalRaptor2767d ago

Misinformed maybe, but hardly dumb.

Excuse me for not being American and not being all that bothered with sales numbers.

NPD isn't common knowledge you know. If it was, where the article mentions "NPD U.S. video game retail sales analysis", it would not have needed to include the "U.S." part, as that is surely rhetorical. You understand?

500 million well spent...

Thanks for giving us another Wii, M$!

Parapraxis2767d ago

Please, don't bring the Wii down to the level of Kinect.

OllieBoy2767d ago

You're right. Wii has more functionality and has a library that gamers actually like.

JonnyBigBoss2767d ago

Lol, thumbs up. Wii actually has games like Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, and Super Smash. Kinect is just about flailing legs and arms in a huge living room that you don't have.

candystop2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

Yeah Wii is definitely better than move. Nothing comes close to Kinect or it's games. Real motion controlling not just beating a stick like sony fanboys. :O

you bunch of cream lickers

DevastationEve2767d ago

Wii having more functionality and games is a by product of it being a 5 year old console now. Bagging on Kinect for those reasons is like bagging on PS3 back in 2007, it won't matter later on.

PS3 fanboys need to admit it to themselves that Kinect has put Xbox into overdrive and all Sony can see right now is a trail of dust they've been hoping to Move through.

jimbone792767d ago

They will never do that. You have to have over a 4-year-old mentality and this is the wrong site for that. I personally like Kinect and I think they will come up with some awesome way to implement it into traditional games, but I know I am in the minority of people on this site who have an open mind and not just blind loyalty to one major corporation who gives a shit about nothing but my money.

The kinect aisle at Target is starting to look like the Wii shovelware aisle!
