The PSP1′s Future Prospects

Critical Gamer writes: There’s been a huge burst of news articles surrounding the PSP2, or ‘NGP’ as its working name has it known. All eyes are trained on the upcoming fight between the 3DS and NGP; who will prosper and who will fail abysmally? Questions you should hold back for another article, because right now we’ll be looking at what’s in store for the underdog of the handheld world of consoles, namely the PSP.

It’s well known in the gaming world that the PSP didn’t do “all that well” so to start off lets look at some of the figures. So far the PSP has sold around 66 million units; that’s a fair amount of hardware in the hands of the general public, but in comparison to the DS/DSi/DSiXL line it seems fairly small potatoes. The combined sold DS units add up to a staggering 145.2 million units so far and are still selling well, so it’s no wonder that gamers are expecting another repeat of history when it comes to the new contenders. As mentioned above however, we’re here to look...

To be honest I've hardly played my PSP, I normally just play on my iPhone, which has enough short, sharp, games to keep me occupied when I'm not playing on my PS3 or Wii. So I think Nintendo & Sony have a lot of convincing to do, to get folk interested in this next generation of handhelds, especially considering the vast price difference of the games!

KrazyFace4813d ago

I dunno, this could be right on the button! But as with all obscure articles like this, it won't be read or get any attention and it's point will go missed! Just like that article that tried to tell everyone the very good reasons as to why the PSPGO was an experiment. Or that one I read years ago about the ARM chips that were to go into the NGP etc.

Shame really...

The only game that really convinced me to buy the PSP1 was MGS:PW love this game.

The NGP is full of games ill instantly love like Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance and MGS4 (lets hope)

I think its not smart to waste money on a PSP1 if the NGP is coming soon.

How are u going to play dissidia?...

mightyboot4813d ago

I dont love that game no hard feelings

It's funny how the media spun the psp as a failure when it has outsold every microsoft console ever released.

Happy sony fanboy day! How fitting is it that my 30 day ban ended on this exact date. Lets all take a moment of our time to remember the sony soldiers who fought bravely in the fanboy war of 2007. My thoughts are with you.

the psp didnt fail. Its the third most successful system of this gen. And still has tons of new software coming out and more amazing software than the consoles had

And with iphone games you get what you pay for, short shovelware games, and a few ports of ds/psp games. Or you can spend the money and get real portable games.

The 3ds is outpacing wii/ds preorders and set to be a monster.

Cool! I hope more developers do this for the PSP title.

When a third party publisher is more dedicated to a platform’s long term lifecycle than the manufacturer themselves

Atlus is the true chad

Darkborn1050d ago

Well yeah, Sony has to pay for overhead and infrastructure as well as maintenance and personnel for the 4 psp users out there while atlus just makes straight cash if someone buys one of their super outdated titles and that they are no longer patching or working on.

Amplitude1050d ago

Gotta wonder why they're even bothering to close the PSP store. All the games are still on the servers, and all the games are still purchasable on the pc and ps3 stores. Seems like the only thing they're doing is closing one web-based store

10 Must Have Games If You're New to The PSP

GamerXChange: "With the PlayStation Vita’s release getting closer, it’s almost hard to think that anyone will pick up a PSP for the first time. What’s more, some PSP games are being remastered in HD for the PS3 and 360. I can guarantee you though, someone will get a PSP this holiday season and will need some games to play on it. If you are that lost soul with the PlayStation Portable in the palm of your hands for the first time, you may want to make that purchase a worthwhile one. So as we continue covering must have games to get for different systems, here are ten games that you might want to look into if you are new to the PSP."

Dissidia is good but personally I think there are other games that I would play on the system long before I looked at Dissidia. Those games include many of the FF games though. :3

PshycoNinja4523d ago

They got Crisis Core, Birth by Sleep and the god of war games on that list. I say that's a win in my books ;).

forevercloud30004522d ago

I know right? Dissidia Series is the SHIT!!!!

I bought both, played the mess out of Duodecim and clocked in over 300 hours into that game. All of my characters are at least level 100 and I now focus on mastering all their moves and allocating them best.

I think dissidia was a well crafted fighter/rpg hybrid which added a lot of value. The story was a bit convoluted but the dynamic of all your fav FF characters meeting up and battling each other is to good to pass up.

P.S. I will say though.....Cloud of Darkness is a BITCH!!! I hate her so much, her moves are highly unpredictable and she cheap shots you a LOT. Golbez is only slightly better. And Emperor has moves that seemingly last the whole match...

I just bought a used PSP for $10, so this article is very applicable to me.

ThatArtGuy4523d ago

Seems kind of RPG heavy though. Aren't the GTA games supposed to be really good?

SoundGamer4523d ago

The GTA games are good on the system. I wouldn't consider them the best though.

If you're looking for good GTA games, Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories, and Chinatown Wars are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

TheFirstClassic4523d ago

Good list overall. HOWEVER! It is missing the best game available on psp (in my opinion), which is greatness known as Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker.

On another note, I really did enjoy the socom series on psp, I always like games where you could give orders to your team.

SubZeroMaster4523d ago

yea, good list, but missing metal gear, monster hunter, GTA chinatown, dissidia 2

LeBronista4522d ago

woah, they ripped out the GTA gsmes and put Socom on the list, no MGS Peace Walker neither.. Persona 2 is a sweet addition in the PSP libary but I don't think it is on the top 10 greatest PSP games of all time.

ThatMiamiGuy4522d ago

It's not a top 10 list and it's not a top ten of the all time greatest either.

wonderwall974518d ago

For me I would choose Crisis Core, Persona, KH, and hmm, God of war maybe. But I am such an RPG buff, and the psp excels in delivering quality graphics with regards to its rpgs..
