Valve: Episodic game plan may not last

Half-Life 2: Episode Three's release could mark the end of Valve Software's foray into episodic gaming, the developer explaining it'll be at a development crossroads once the finale is out in the wild.

"I think what we really want to do is have a couple of examples out there - Episode One, and how long it was to play and how long it took to develop, Episode Two, Portal and TF2 and then the third part of the trilogy; and then sit down with the community and say, 'OK, so what do you want?'", Valve's Gabe Newell told CVG in an interview.

Well, episodic hasn't been that perfect or successful. The only successfull and true episodic games are the new Sam & Max series. Sin Episodes failed and Half Life is going back to good old methods.

Half-life 2 was a great game. I wasn't too keen on the idea of episodes and after play Episode One I don't feel like it lives up to the quality that was set for Half-life. I finished Episode One the day that I bought it, which was pretty disappointing. I'm hoping Episode 2 will be better, if not maybe Valve should get back to making full releases instead of episodes.

my sentiments exactly, nicely said :)

the whole idea of release episodes was to cut down on development time and allow them to release newer tech more often, im sure orginally that they said there'd be an episode every 6 months or so, well hasnt it been over a year now between 1 and 2?

not bad mouthing Valve, i believe them to be one of the best development houses out there, especailly with the hugh role that steam plays to pc gamers!

edit @ MK_Red, yes mate totally agree, HALF-LIFE 3 pleasssseeee!!!

"GOOD NEWS FOR GAMERS..." Totally agreed.

The episodic idea was nice but not that suitable for our industry. Now it's time for some Half Life 3 talking.

i havent played half life 2, or episode 1, so when orange box comes out it will give me plenty gaming fun.

I played HL2 on my pc however I didn't have a very good video card. The game is fun as hell. I have my Orange Box paid for in full and I'm excited for October 9. I haven't played the episodes, however in my opinion, HL2 is one of the best games ever.

i never played episode 1, but i know that halflife 2 took foreeeeever to beat, i'm a big fan of halflife and counterstrike.. somehow when i think of halflife2 memories they get sooo mixed up with resistance fom memories, i dunno why this always happens to me..

but back to topic, halflife franchise could last as long as they keep making it, i'll always keep buying it
