40GB Sony PS3: Cheaper model made by Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn

Rumors have been circling for weeks about Sony planning a cheaper 40GB Playstation 3, but now it looks like it's a little more than a rumor. It has been revealed that Sony has approached Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn and asked them to make a lower-spec Sony PS3.

Too bad there's really nothing new to see here. I was hoping for something more real.

DrPirate3981d ago

Well, if this is what they think will work....

Spike473982d ago

it will have wifi and stuff

ReBurn3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

I agree. I think that the machine could lose the card readers, but I don't know what else could go. That and 40gb of HDD isn't enough to justify the price difference, though, unless the 80gb version keeps its packin.

Gamespot-equals-EGM3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

Cost savings (my calculations):

-$20-30 (bye bye Wifi)
-$10-20 (bye bye BC, No Graphics Synthesizer chip)
-$10-20 (bye bye Card Reader)
-$10-20 (bye bye 40gb of HD space; 80gb HD to 40gb HD)

Total savings: $50-90

Sony can probably save an extra $10 here and there (their engineers can figure that out). The rest of the difference (if there is one; probably $20-30) Sony is going to have to eat.

I kinda agree with you. I'll expect PS3 40gb to loose everything 20gb lost + everything regarding backwards compatibility.

But I "hope" for the sake of possible new PS3 owners that they will include WiFi. It feels like an important part (though it's not that good but it works).

Expy3982d ago

I'm guessing that:

1. It'll lose the chrome finish
2. It'll have a 40GB HDD (obviously)
3. It will lose the card readers (hence bringing back the 20GB casing)
4. Wi-fi will be included.
5. No EE (Emotion Engine)
6. No games bundled (as opposed to its 80GB brother)

Gamespot-equals-EGM3981d ago (Edited 3981d ago )

wow, you kids get confused easily (most teenagers don't understand this). the EE and GS are different chips, ones a cpu ones a gpu.

the EE (ps2's cpu) was removed from 80gb but the GS (ps2's gpu) was retained. in the 40gb, the gs will also be removed.

If they make a $399 PS3, people will come.

Well, actually, with Halo 3 MS probably already has this holiday season. (MAYBE the Wii can beat 'em.) What Sony needs is killer software. R&C and Haze both look good, but it takes an already established franchise to battle off the goliath that is Halo.

And before MGS4, FFXIII and KZ2, Sony doesn't have one.

ReBurn3982d ago

It really is too bad that so many of the PS3's killer franchised got pushed to 2008. I don't know if Halo 3 and Mass Effect would have been able to pull Microsoft through against those titles.

eagle213982d ago

not after Tuesday of course. Sony has Uncharted, UT3, Ratchet, Eye of Judgement, Singstar (very popular), Haze, Folklore and crazy other exclusives and multiplats. They will be safe this xmas, esp. with blu ray. Regardless of a drop, they will sell millions worldwide, just fall short of MS and Nintendo in NA. But u never know! But, $399 would overwhelm MS and Nintendo to say the least.

nasim3982d ago

the only place it would do well is NA.

However considering a short user base of x360 (10 m ) it wont sell more than 4 million copies

I always see you posting about Japan and Europe.

fair enough, Japan is a lost cause....but Microsoft isnt doing too badly in the UK (where I live), infact it's somewhat more popular than ps3 over here. Halo 3 legendary and special edition preorders have been hard to come by for weeks.

Anyway...On the topic...

I think a £299 ps3 could be enough to turn things around for Sony. I would probably buy one if the system isn't too gimped, I can live with a 40gb hd and I not too fussed about card readers.

jack who3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

sony now you have 4 diff wat u got to say 4 your self?

edit:disagree all u want you know its true

Absinthetic3982d ago

what the point of saying that? really?

you think sony is the only who does it?

QuackPot3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

60G is the main SKU world wide - run out in North America and likely to follow worldwide.

80G in limited release - likely to become the worldwide standard SKU.

20G is gone & 40G is PURELY RUMOUR.

Absinthetic3982d ago

doesnt take a genius to connect the dots and figure out sony is up to something

1)Sony sells shares of IPO to get an extra 2.6 billion in cash
2)FCC published reports of tests on a new ps3 model which has a different mmodel number than the 20, 60, and 80
3)Sony making a big marketing push for blu ray this holiday
4)rumord 40gb said to be bundled with spiderman 3 hence no confrimation at TGS since its still weeks before the movie is release

Squeezle3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

The main reason for the criticism of Microsoft was that they released the "Premium" 360 with all the bells and whistles and they also released the "Core" 360 which didn't even have a hard drive. This limited developers at the time to purely streaming data off the DVD. In the new (and old) PS3 SKUs, all of them include a blu-ray drive and a hard drive for developers to work with. They are merely taking out "luxuries" like the card reader, emotion chip, and wifi card.
