Toronto Thumbs Review: Patrician IV

From the article:

"It all started innocently enough.

At the top of my e-mail inbox was a single message from Jorge, subject line “Patrician”. Inside, only two words: “You play?”

“No,” I replied. I racked my brain trying to remember what the Patrician series was all about. Was it a city-building game? Some sort of commerce sim? A strategy game a la Europa Universalis or Total War?

While I pondered, Jorge proceeded to fire off a string of e-mails asking if I would be up for reviewing a copy of Kalypso’s Patrician IV, followed by the instructions on where to get it and to be quick about it. Hint firmly taken, I agreed to take the review on and started installing the game on my PC." (Patrician IV, PC) -

I was a bit hesitant to try this game out. City building? Cool. World domination? Cool. Counting houses and trading salt for beef? Meh.

But this really grew on me. Fast.
