Tech Experts: 'Widgets' Are Huge Security Risk

Widgets - those fun, graphic little applications that bring things like clocks and calculators to your desktop - are all plagued with lousy security and stand ready to unleash the next wave of malware onto users' systems, according to new research.

The security holes in these applications already have opened up: Microsoft's MS07-048 advisory, put out on August's Patch Tuesday, addressed a vulnerability in Vista's Feed Headlines Gadget that could have let in malicious RSS feeds or links.

The story is too old to be commented.

apple widgets ftw

oh, and vista's are called "gadgets" iirc

but thats how a hacker things i guess. find something popular and exploit it somehow

gadgets, widgets doesn't matter weither it be mac OS or vista both sides have a security hole.

And its because of one simple thing...A good 80% of the time widgets and gadgets are user made and not secure at all.

Show me proof that Mac OS is "plagued" with security holes with regard to Widgets, WilliamRLBaker. OS X has an exemplary security record, especially in comparison to Windows. Almost every "exploit" that has appeared affecting OS X has been mere "proof of concept", and generally is patched by Apple within days of finding and have yet to affect the general Mac populace. Contrast this to the great multitude of people affected by Windows exploits, scripts, viruses, macro-viruses and worms. OS X is built largely on *BSD code and *BSD (and Unix in general) has a legendary security track record.

Im unignoreing you.

and I'm apologizing I had no right to call you names talk down to you or any thing like that, I know these are just excuses but its 7:11 am and i've been up for a long while now, and I've spent so much time fighting with Sony faboys that i started lettting my self act like a fanboy.

I hope you can forgive me, and I take back all the bad attitude and bad stuff I said to you, I all so take back you are right the MAC os X widget is not Plauged with security holes, But it does have a security hole just like the vista Gadget has a security hole, and both security holes on both OS's we're patched before they we're exploited.

I should have changed what I said to it doesn't matter gadget, widget, they both have a security hole and they both we're patched soon after with no hackers being able to exploit them.

Again I reiterate I am very very sorry for being such a jerk and i hope ya can forgive me.
