Don’t be so quick to write-off the NGP!!

The are a lot of naysayers, in the gaming media crowd, currently saying that Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP) is not going to be that big of a success in comparison to the Nintendo 3DS and the DS. While, those people may be right, I find their point of view to be a bit short-sighted. The mobile landscape as a whole has changed since the release of the original PSP. People use there mobiles to do things like download apps on the go to streaming TV.

*The are a lot of naysayers, in the gaming media crowd, currently saying that Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP) is not going to be that big of a success in comparison to the Nintendo 3DS and the DS.

What most people forget is that the ds and 3ds are aimed at the casual market and the NGP is aimed at a higher audience.

Yea it is, but at the same time the NGP does have things that appeal to casual gamers aswell. Things like touch screen controls and motion controls go a long way in providing casual gamer experiences. But also by having things like netflix and hulu, I believe they appeal to a casual market as well.

OK people, please quit trying to separate Core gamers from Casual gamers!

A lot of casual gamers were the ones who bought the NES, Gameboy, DS, Ps1, Ps2 and Psp. Which is why those consoles sold so many units. Casual gamers helped build this market. There are nowhere as many hardcore gamers as there are casuals. Otherwise, more of these big name games would sell more units!

Xbox 360 and Ps3 have sold about 50 million units each (respectively). Yet most games have a hard time passing the 5 million mark! What are those other 45 million consoles doing? They are mostly casual gamers who only buy a game here and there.

Lots of gamers have abandoned console gaming because it's not as much fun anymore. Everything is so realistic that they don't want to be bothered. They miss the fun arcadey get in and play for fun feeling that so many hardcore gamers hate now. So those people went to handhelds and cellphone games. Some just decided to go back to older consoles.

Back on topic: No one should dismiss the Psp2, because for one thing, they finally made the console the way it was meant to be designed. I think the Psp2 could end up being one of the best consoles ever made if Sony does everything right!

Your argument is a little off-base. There is no problem separating Core from Casual. They are different markets, different games appeal to them. That doesn't make either market irrelevant - they are equally important to the gaming industry.

I think that one of the reasons many gamers on N4G are often anti-casual gaming is that when there is a saturation of casuals on a certain console, developers are forced to cater to those casuals. Thus reducing the number of "core" games on the platform. This is why you see so many shovelware and casual games on Wii and DS.

In my opinion, console gaming is not as much fun anymore simply because all the eastern developers have went off tracks.

They either make mediocre non-worthy sequels to big franchises. Or try to appeal to the western audience too much.

They also put too much focus on handhelds or casual games simply because its so much cheaper to develop for.

They have lost sight of what made them so unique and creative in the first place.

Although we still get awesome western games, gaming just doesn't feel as complete without the core eastern games there too!

It is funny but a casual game could be considered a core game depending on the amount of dedication the player puts to it. That damn game peggle is an example. It doesnt have the blood or blowing stuff up but man does it really just take up a persons time.

Core games arent what you think they are. And to be honest, it is a reflection on the person not the game they play. Someone could be a hardcore "casual" game player. Playing all manner of those types of games...all the time. That my friends is someone dedicated to the craft. They would be worthy of the desigation of hardcore.

Funny...but true. In fact, those designations are older than most people on this site. Seems over time the younger crowd has taken them and twisted them to suit their needs and not the reflect them properly. You arent a core gamer simply because you play big blowin stuff up games. That would be considered core by association.

You earn that title by dedicating your time and effort to ALL things gaming. least it used to mean that.

On topic: the 3ds will do great so long as there are games that show off its features. If nintendo just tries to ride the name value with no substance then it will be n64/gc all over again. You need the games to sell the system. Not the other way around. Sony tried that last time and it worked only so far. I think sony learned allot from last time. They shouldnt make the same mistakes twice.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Just to let people know that the 3DS is not true 3D like coming out of screen 3D. It's the crap so called 3D also known as DEPTH when things have DEPTH inside the screen.

And Nintendo is showing CGI ads that things come out of screen. Thats False Advertising to the public.

theonlylolking2601d ago

Thats what I have told people but they still say its 3d coming at you. Guess they dont know what tech nintendo is using =\

The 10th Rider2601d ago (Edited 2601d ago )

And you've played one?

Yes it's not 3d coming out of the screen, but it tricks the eyes into making you think it is.

"And I know there are many naysayers who say that portables should just offer short casual experiences and simplistic style games, and that nobody wants to play a home console game on the go. Well, I for one find that mindset a bit foolish. How can you know that people don’t want a full console experience on the go, When it has never been properly offered? The NGP is the first real try at offering a full console experience on a mobile."

I for one can not wait for a console-like experience on the go. Plus the NGP has a capacitive touch screen on the front with multitouch. That can cover those iOS loving people's gaming needs.

punkpop1012601d ago (Edited 2601d ago )

Resident Evil: Revelations
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Saints Row: Drive-By
Star Fox 64 3D
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Tales of the Abyss
aren't those enough psp fanboys huh?

hellzsupernova2601d ago

3D was a gimmmick when sony was pushing for it on the ps3 now all of a sudden its the next big thing because its on a nintendo console? typical fanboy

schlanz2601d ago

You're seriously trying to compare super fucking expensive 3D TVs with ridiculous glasses (also super fucking expensive) to an affordable, glasses free 3D Nintendo handheld?

Typical Nintendo hater.

schlanz2601d ago

It really annoys me how "hardcore" gamers think for some reason they are more important than casual gamers when they only make up probably less than 10% of both combined.

I prefer to not label myself casual or hardcore. I'm a gaming enthusiast. I love fun, well constructed games from every genre and classification whether it's Cut the Rope and Plants vs Zombies or Bayonetta and Oblivion.

You're going to find pleeeeenty of casual and core games alike on every fucking system ever made for the rest of time, don't try to delude yourself into thinking otherwise.

People are going to write it off until they see more than ports, tech demos, and multiplatform games that can also be played on consoles.

Rainstorm812602d ago

but then again no one writes off the 3DS and that most of what we see on there.....ports, tech demos, and old mutliplats.

dredgewalker2601d ago

They also seem to forget that the NGP will do more than just gaming like the PSP and the PS3. You get much more than you payed for with these products. You can watch movies, surf the net, listen to music without needing to buy an additional add-on.

Let these people complain and nitpick, while I will be enjoying the heck out of the NGP when it comes out. It's not my loss in the end.

supremacy2601d ago

God atleast someone on here notices the double standards around here.

blackburn52601d ago

Thank you Raiinstorm81. I was beginning to think I was the only one that noticed. People are attacking the PSP2 for just being ports but the 3DS just has basically ports of Gamecube, PS1, PS2 and N64 games. Why not make a new Zelda instead of just porting over decades old OOT? At least developers are making new games in popular series for the PSP2 instead of just simply porting it straight from the PS3. Just more proof how blind some gamers are. Nintendo really knows how gullible there market is. How else coukd they keep Pokemon going this long.

Legion2602d ago

Way too early to right off a product before it even hits the market. If I recall they tried to do the same with the Wii and Kinetic. And both of those were VERY premature.

Japan alone will ensure that a Sony product will not be written off. Especially when it comes to portable game play where Japan rules the market.

jaosobno2601d ago (Edited 2601d ago )

Who the hell is writing it off?!?!

There is 10x more excitement around NGP than 3DS!

Developers & audience have been singing praises ever since it was announced!

Eidolon2601d ago

No kidding, there are 15 news articles a day about the NGP.
