PSP2/NGP: 8 times as powerful as the Samsung Galaxy S

And it can even be 16 times more powerful graphically based on clock-for-clock than the iPhone 4 and Ipad, so declared by Peter McGuinness, director of business environment at "Imagination Technologies", the company that developed the advanced graphics processing unit (GPU: SGX543MP4+) that will be on the PSP2/NGP.

Wow, I'm surprised. A device meant for next generation gaming stronger than other multimedia devices? That's unheard of!!

ConanOBrien2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

Sony picks off-the-shelf chips (09's tech) to reduce development costs this time around, smart move...now i will put my money $299 on PSP2...sorry PS3 Slim. I've made my decision.

cakeisalie2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

Lol ofcourse a device set to launch 1 yr from now should be more powerful then whats on the market now.

Question is how will it compare to tech that is out in the time it is released.

Its retardedly easy for me to say Nvidia's next chip launching a year from now will be more powerful then whatever that is out today.

DaTruth2459d ago

Can you say Invidia's next chip launching a year from now will be 16 times more powerful than whatever is out today?

cakeisalie2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

In comparison to Consoles certainly.. GTX 580 in SLI probably already is 20x as powerful:P

DaTruth2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

There are no consoles that are 2 months old, so I'm not sure what you are talking about; there is no frame of reference!

But I can guarantee you that Invidia's next chip set to release a year from now won't be 16 times as powerful as their most recently released chip or AMD's!

Technology does not advance 16X annually or we would be in Star Trek in 4 years!

cakeisalie2459d ago

Agreed though were in my post did i say the next chip will be 16x as powerful as current hardware.

I merely said it will be more powerful, then whatever is out today. Which applies to sonys next portable as well.

DFresh2458d ago

Really?

I'd buy a PS3 Slim before I bought the PSP2.

Though I would make sure to save up for the PSP2 or wait for a price drop.
(I'm not sure if serious.)

T_T

silvacrest2458d ago

its not that its just powerful, its that it 8 times more powerful then the galaxy S and 16 times more powerful then the iphone 4

these 2 device only came out months ago so this much of a leap is impressive

and a quad core CPU for a handheld device is unheard of dual core for smartphones is only now taking off

miyamoto2458d ago

A wise decision Conan XD

I was really this close to buying a Galaxy S or Tab because most of my friends have their own awesome Android devices.

But I knew more powerful Android devices are coming this year like the Galaxy S2 & Tab2 or the Motorola Xoom... but the NGP just blows all of these Androids away!!!

I am content with my Sony Ericsson mobile phone as it does its job well as a phone and it has HD video recording covered for my casual day to day filming and stuff.

With my Skype account at $30/year on board the NGP ... it technically up converts it into a video call phone!

4X more powerful than the Galaxy S... I have also made my decision this holiday season even if Galaxy S2 or Xoom arrives.

Highlife2458d ago

Look at GOD of War on PSP. PSP is how old and still that game looks better than just about any handheld game on new devices. So it isn't always about best processor. It is about having a dedicated machine and getting the most out of it. You aren't going to see that with most other devices.

I wonder if people will start installing linux on it? :/

a_bro2458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

well apparently Windows 8 will be able to run on this due to ARM compatibility.

Sony better watch out for hackers

RedDead2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

CPU is atleast 2.5 times stronger. 3DS isn't weak, it has two screens and one has 3d, and with that the graphics are quite a bit beyond the Xbox and Ps2. Both the 3Ds and NGP are powerful for handheld. NGP is just a good bit more powerful, but don't think the 3DS is weak.

gorebago2459d ago

I don't disagree with you but I haven't enjoyed a nintendo console since the snes although the gba was pretty badass (castlevania!).

heylo2459d ago

"graphics are quite a bit beyond the Xbox and Ps2"

PS2? yes
xbox? no
Even the NGP's GPU barely outperforms the one in the xbox in terms of polygons

Chris3992459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

And that's probably a dev kit version (3DS). Retail will have about 64 MB, likely. It's also outputting across 2 screens AND rendering in 3D in some cases. See: Dead Alive, where the performance and graphics take a hit when being rendered in 3D.

3DS stuff will look about as good as mid-late gen PSP titles. That's nothing to scoff at, but it - like much of Nintendo's recent hardware - is far behind the technologically curve with a gimmick (3D in this case) added to outweigh this factor. Will it? Probably. But there are so many smartphones and other portable devices these days that I doubt we'll ever see something as successful as the DS again.

Edit: @ heylo, actually the NGP's combined poly pushing output is about the same as a PS3. Here:

http://www.gamespot.com/new...

Edit: And Red, we still don't know the actual NGP's processor speed. And you also can't just look at the 3DS, which has two 266 MHz cores and say that the - theorized - NGP's processor speed is four (not 2.5, 266 times 4 is roughly 1000, see the Gamespot article) times more powerful. It has twice the cores and effects and parallels that rival modern CPUs. Not comparable at all.

And the quad-core GPU (3DS has a single 166MHz processor) is where the real ass kicking comes in. Then throw in 512MB-1GB of RAM (is there a figure on this yet?) The NGP is a beast of a machine, a beast.

heylo2459d ago

@chris
the RSX pushes 250 million polygons and the PowerVR MP4 133 million when clocked at 200Mhz
the fillrate is the same though

Chris3992459d ago

And yes, the fill-rate is the same. Effectively on a small screen, NGP games will LOOK like PS3 games. The devs, Sony, everyone is saying that.

heylo2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

15 disagress... I guess nobody saw that I was refering to the 3DS
and yes I agree that the NGP doesn't need 250mio polys to achieve PS3-like-visuals since you wouldn't notice them on a 544p screen anyway

Ju2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

The CPU is at least 2.5x stronger? Are you kidding me? ARM11 vs. 4xCortex-A9. A single Cortex-A9 beats the ARM11 already. ARMv6 (ARM11) vs v7 (CortexA9) ISA. 3DS runs 2x266MHz. The lowest Cortex-A9 runs 800MHz. Cortext-A9 is the next generation ARM cpu - everything else is currently based on the Cortex-A8. One core already runs circles around the 3DS. Now that baby has 4 of those.

Same with the GPU. PICA200 vs. 4 latest gen SGX543 GPUs. 2.5 is an understatement. Big time. Twice the shader pipeline of current (single core) mobile GPUs: SGX540 (e.g.Samsung GalaxyS/Iphone4). Multiply that by 4 now. PICA200: none.

RedDead2458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

Ju correct me if i'm wrong, the NGP is a quad core processor, not 4 separate cores(there's a differance right?). So the lowest it runs is 800 Mhz. You can't honestly tell me the NGP will go up to 3.2 Ghz(this is Ps3 and Xbox 360 territory and most gaming pc's are clocked to around this if not more). I would say 1.5Ghz is the highest they will possibly go, alot of heat comes with more power...Am I right...?

Infact 2.0 Ghz is the highest the Cortex-A9 can achieve...I think It's just split four ways.

Edit---Ju/ Your wrong on that, your very misinformed. Multi core of a processor is split up. Multi CPU is the term your refering too. the Ps3 is a split multi core system running at 3.2 Ghz. 360 is a tri core running at 3.2 Ghz.

The 3ds has 2 separate CPU's running at 266Mhz

the NGP will have 1 cpu with 4 cores ruinng anywhere between 800Mhz(or 0.8Ghz) - 2 ghz.

Ju2458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

Quad core = 4 cores on one die. Yes, 4 processors tightly integrated, every one running at at least 800MHz (or - how you say it - one core @ 3.2GHz. Though you can't really see it like that). About heat/power - yes, that is why I go with a _conservative_ estimate that they go with the lowest (!) clock frequency, 800MHz.

The PS3 has 9 (!) cores running at 3.2GHz each! (1PPU and 8 SPUs, 7 active). And - to all the disagreers - an SPU is a core (with a very slim ISA). 360: 3 cores @ 3.2GHz each.

Gran Touring2458d ago

@Ju an SPE is not a core. In Cell architecture, there are no multiple caches for the multiple SPEs, nor are there multiple register sets. Instead, there's one big single-register set with 128 registers that can be accessed by all the SPEs at all times.

To put into perspective, no one would dare say the cell processor is stronger than an i7 920 @3.2ghz with 6 cores.

skrug2458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

@Gran Touring
i7 920 has 4 cores with 8 threads (2 thread per core) not 6 cores

Belzebub2458d ago

@Gran Touring:
Actually each SPE has a 128*128bit register file. Despite the fact, that it has no cache, each SPE instead features 256Kb local storage.
Sony is also talking about a "multi-core-architecture& quot; and also some devs stated, that a SPE is a full and independent core.

now thats power for you

house2459d ago

its over 9000!!!

man that's insane didn't think it would be that strong i want this thing more and more every day

Nappa2458d ago

WHAT?!!?!? 9000!!! that can't be right!!!!

Yeah,The PSP2 is gonna own,I gotta get me one!

gorebago2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

My galaxy is pretty powerful, this sounds phenomenal......me want

Ju2459d ago

Yes, that's pretty amazing. This is everything what the GalaxyS is, but the latest generation (A9 vs. A8, 543 vs 540) and then multiply that by 4. A single core CPU/GPU version would blow the Galaxy (and IPhone4) out of the water.

I expected something on a Tegra2 level. Now, this is again about twice as fast as those Tegra2 devices we've seen recently...
