Videogamer: PSP gamers are able to hook their handheld up to a TV and play game and video content on a big screen, but it appears no such feature will be offered by Sony's newly announced handheld, the NGP.
If I'm honest, that's a bit of a fail. I'm beginning to see a future where the home console IS your portable attached to the TV, once you remove physical media input as much, the argument is, the console doesn't need to be so large. Obviously to do this you would really have to watch out for overheating due to the smaller size, nice idea though.
Yeah, neat, neat idea.
It makes sense because it's impossible if some games take advantage of the touchscreen/rear touchpad. This is the reason why Apple restricts video out for its games.
technically ngp could support move. it has the camera, and the ability for bluetooth connectivity. if they put a video out on this thing the possibilities would be endless.
yea, i guess i didn't think about that, but still, maybe they'll have it a feature, but only for videos, ps1 games, psp games, minis, (and ps2 games?)
They don't want people to replace their PS3's with this device, which is something that I was thinking about.
Not again! I don't WANT to have to wait for the PSP2 2000 :( "this thing has a touch screen so i dont know who this is going to work" That's true, it certainly wouldn't work for ALL games. But still....it'd be nice for the games that do.
Hmm I thought I read that you could hook it up to an HDTV, guess I was making up things
But if you're a videophile like me then that feature wouldn't meant anything to me anyway. The games are made specifically for that 4 inch screen and it's an OLED TV meaning your TV probably isn't better than that screen.
I'm not really a 'handheld-gamer'... but if the 'NGP' would have had a way to connect it to a big-screen TV so I could you bring it over to a friend's house and attach it to a TV and play movies and games from it, it could have been the best thing in the world, besides being Shakira's bra...
If you read to the interview yesterday with Jack Tretton he stated that some features were not final.
its a fail yah but honestly i've never seen any one playing his PSP while plugged into a TV + this thing has a touch screen so i dont know who this is going to work
crap. i was hoping for some sort of video out. would be nice to be able to play 1080p movies off of it and onto the hdtv
@mikeslemonade *cough* ahem, it's 5 inches thank you very much, what a cheapshot, pfff 4 inches, that's for chumps /s
Awww. i really liked that feature.
As Farhad stated below, how did they get the output running to the display at the convention? Anyway, I'm sure there will be something offered... maybe wireless streaming of media via the PS3 (remote play, etc.) that can compensate. Does anyone know if the NGP is DLNA certified? Either way it really isn't a big deal to me. I have all my media at home on my PS3 and my network via TVersity, so if I wanted something to show up on my television, I do it that way. As far as gaming goes, most of the games are going to have PS3 counterparts, which will obviously look and perform better than their portable cousins due to hardware resources and output resolution. I thought I'd miss the video output on my current PSP had it ever been taken away, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I never really used it in the first place.
if I remember correctly, they literally had a camera guy facing the camera down over the device to get the footage.
yea, but why would they have a feature on psp and then leave it out on NGP? sorry, but i don't believe that it doesn't have video out, it should be a given, right?
You cannot get the same quality image as the PSP screen though unless your television is seriously high class. On a 1080p samsung I can get the image close but it is just not as crisp as the PSP screen itself. The enlarge images will do some games like CC and GOW justice others do not look so hot. 5 inches OLED will be better tech than my LCD so I dont mind that much. The convergence of my PSN account is what excites me to no end. Still a great system non the less and remote play will be better with the horsepower of the NGP. I am alittle bummed but it keeps my PS3 relevant LOL!
At therepearson...the same way game sites get video of DS games that doesn't have a video out either?
So ytour idea is to have a handheld that needs to be plugged in all the time? Let's keep it separate. What I would like to see is the psp2 hooking up wirelessly to that tron like visor Sony showed off at CES that provides immersive large screen high resolution 3d and 5.1 surround. I can dream can I?
That's what I was thinking. Maybe the NGP will have some sort of wireless media output?
well that's kind of lame seeing how the PSP-2000 onwards had that feature. Not sure how we're supposed to capture video off the device (if you're into those kinds of things).
Since NGP can make PS3 into a Cloud Server and play Games, perhaps it will be able to work in reverse.
Lol at people calling it a fail cus of no being able TO PLAY A PORTABLE CONSOLE ON A HOME TV... Giv' me a fcking break...you bunch, you!
The original PSP could do it, so why shouldn't this be able to? It would be an awesome extra feature, especially considering how powerful this device really is. It could almost replace your home console and be used with a Dual Shock 3 via Bluetooth.
yeah its funny =) main reason: doesn't suit the design of touch screen/touch pad it just doesn't make sense its a PORTABLE GAMING CONSOLE. play it when you are commuting/out when at home...play your PS3
you dun f'd up. I was so looking forward to it. My psp is 1000 and it too doesn't link with tv. Guess I'll wait this time. You'd think companies would give incentives to early adopters. like 20-60gb ps3 full BC. What went wrong sony?
This sucks. I travel a lot, so if I could just bring an NGP, a DS3 and an HDMI cable I'd be able to happily keep gaming in my hotel room.
If it doesnt have video out, then how did they get the output to the huge screen in the press conference? I'm guessing an extra wire will have to be bought for it to output video.
IIRC, didn't they just have a camera man stand behind Shuhei Yoshida as he was demoing games on the ngp. Also, when they were displaying the new UI, they didn't show it running on the ngp itself. It was probably a pre-recorded video for presentation purposes, since the UI is most likely in its early development stages. Therefore, it's safe to assume that there is indeed no video output for the ngp.
Not to be rude or anything, but I cant remember seeing a camera man? I just hope that Sony actually mean that there is no output from the hardware of the PSP, but maybe something external can be bought for the video output. Or hopefully someone just made it up :/
Right behind Yoshida. Clearly, there is a cameraman.
Honestly, i don't buy a handheld to play in a TV.
I don't play in TVs either
People just like to btch too fraking much...but whatever suit them eh. e3 going to be a total bomb.
That's why we got a ps3 ;) Don't need to hook up a portable ps3 when you got a stationary..
dont care bout no video output lol
You can always stream the data wirelessly now a days specially with all the connectivity the PSP2 has. Some TV like Sony Bravia have wireless built-in and can easily use that as a receiver for direct feedback. Wireless N + Bluetooth FTW. Or the Third Party Accessories Maker can always make an attachment through the USB.
Since the PSP2 has Wi-Fi it'll most likely support Wi-Fi Direct, which means playing your games on your TV could/will still be possible. EDIT: But then again I don't know if the NGP's been Wi-Fi Direct certified, I don't see why it wouldn't be because literally every smartphone and tablet coming out this year will have it. EDIT: Only one device needs to be Wi-Fi Direct certified for it to connect to another Wi-Fi device e.g your TV has standard Wi-Fi but your NGP has Wi-Fi Direct, therefore you can still display your game on your TV. Technology is getting crazy right now.
Exactly. Or Sony can Remote Play/Sync the 2 hardware if you owned both PSP2 and Bravia TV.
But why build in a wireless bottleneck when a physical connection will always be more robust?
Maybe you will be able to play your PSP2 games/content remotely(or otherwise) with your PS3, rather than the other way around.
no way that would kill the PSP 2 right there
Shame but by no means a deal breaker. I mean this is a portable after all. I have a PS3 hooked to my TV when I need it ;)
I'm just hoping its not too expensive. Handhelds feel like they are getting way too pricey these days. I havent owned a portable since my Game Boy Color
My last was the original w/ green and white screen lol
I think it should have a HDMi out/dock pod port. Why is this good? Well it'll act like a charging stattion+TV output device it'd be great, Imagine coming home, your part way through you DVD and simply drop it into the pod your TV changes channel and BOOM continue watching. It has blue tooth so make it able to use the PS3 one.
This is so far the only bad thing I've heard about the NGP, but then again even if it had this feature I would've never used it. But I can understand why people would be disappointed, I mean you're at home with your family or friends and you want to show them the new Uncharted game, but they have to all cuddle around you to see the screen, so instead of getting in to a group hug you could just output the game to your TV. So yeah having this feature would be awesome but if it's not their it won't be the end of the world for me.
My PSP GO has video out. Why would they go backwards? I don't really believe this. We will see at E3
and how is the experience? i recall it is lame. Play the PSP on your hands, PS3 for the couch
It's pretty awesome to play games with a dual shock. It's not lame at all.
ahhh i was wondering about this feature, but thats okay, just buy a ps3 for ur tv lol
The PSP2 doesn't need a video output port, all it needs is to be 'Wi-Fi Direct' certified. If it is then Sony ditched the video output port in favour of newer technology (Wi-Fi Direct) which is great. Just to let you know, Wi-Fi Direct works at speeds up to 250Mbps, but remember none of this has been confirmed yet to be in the PSP2, so don't get too happy (^_^) But I don't see why the PSP2 won't have it because the LG Optimus 2X is Wi-Fi Certified and that's smaller than the PSP2, so I don't think it's a space issue.
Hahaha called it several months ago! If it can do TV out and it's graphical output is as good as what they say.. It'll will eat "WITH" the PS3 on the same market! NPG has the ff: "core" dev support highly likely of a lot of Indie support (PS Suite) 2 NUBS WiFi 3G Focus on MP and Social Network Amazing new inputs for a PS device More than anything, it's a PS3/360 competitor (yeah you got that right).. than a 3DS.
keep the handheld portable, play the PS3 on your entertainment system. no brainer
Most tablets and stuff require a docking station to do this. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same scenario here.
I plan on using this thing on the go--i.e.: where I *won't* have a TV to hook it up to. If I'm at home, then I'll just play my PS3 on my TV, not my NGP. Maybe plug it in to watch a movie, but why? Again I'll either use my PS3 or, better, my laptop. I'm sure some nit-pickers will find reasons to complain about this, but I wouldn't use a TV out on this thing.
as long as i can stream justintv entertainment channels for a small fee cool; but if i can wirelessly play killzone on 3g for psn free status even better. i think for this to be a ngp it has to have tv out with some proprietary hdmi; or standard hdmi plug. compare this with the samsung galaxy tab or the blackberry tablet and to disclude ngp from having tv connectivity is fail in a major way for future adaptability.
The PSP2 won't need a video out port if it's been 'Wi-Fi Direct' certified. 'Wi-Fi Direct' is a new technology and has been developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, it works at speeds of up to 250Mbps. I'm almost certain the PSP2 will support it, It's going become a standard feature from now on in literally everything. Sony haven't gone in to specific details and they didn't intended to, we'll all have to wait until E3 for the full blow out.
"No video out for NGP" behind the times as usual.
PSP Go and every PSP past 1000 had it... thus what, they were ahead of times before? and now decided "AH we must satisfy the trolls of the internet that are too insecure with themselves to face up to reality and thus must attack pointless actions done by us! LEAVE OUT THE VIDEO OUT OPTION FROM NGP FOR THEM!!" yes, no other reason other than they intentionally wished to be mocked by the likes of you. no design, or technological reasons what so ever. 2 disks however, perfectly fine right? *laughs* you children =)
still behind the times lame consoles lol.
I hope Sony changes their mind on this feature. I did not use it that much but it is nice to have when you do want to use your TV as the screen.
you all know you can buy usb adapters to convert to a video in right?
People complaining about shit they won't even use- no more than a few times, if at all.
you know what people will do? I want it in because I would use it most of the time.
who needs it? Its just a useless feature that would add to the cost of the device
